A field of 9 older horses will enter the starting gate of the New York racing circuit in the ESR $100,000 Meemaw Materialization.  The race will be run at 11-furlongs over the Turf Course.

FORCES OF DESTINY – the 5-Year Old Light Grey Horse by Medaglia D’oro out of a Curlin mare was on a pretty impressive roll in the Listed Stakes circuit, winning three of five starts, while finishing ITM in the other two before failing running into Grade I winner BROKEN NAILS LTO in the Lex Luthor Turf Endurance; the kingab trained KY bred meets no such opposition in this field and should be first out by the third call…one to beat

SWAP – the 5-Year Old Light Grey son by Senor Swinger out of a Red Giant mare, racing under the “I was bowling” icon of the beisbol racing stables, is the only Graded winnerin this ESR field, a résumé that includes the G1 Japanese Saint Legend, the G2 Seventh King Eddie Stakes, and the G3 Manatee Classic; the one time claimer turned his career around when introduced to long distance racing, winning three Graded events while finishing ITM in another five in twelve career starts at the Graded level; gelded in August of last year, the PA bred returned to the races in December with a pair of Allowance wins before returning to the Graded circuit; followed up a disappointing effort in the G2 Victoria Cup with a third place finish in the G2 Cold Plate but uncharacteristically lost ground during the stretch run of that race raising some questions here…class edge

NATE THE SKATE – the 5-Year Old Bay Horse by Nathaniel out of a Peintre Celebre x Kingmambo mare looks to hit the jackpot for the casino racing stables; the talented ENG bred has done most of his damage racing in the Local Bred circuit and finds himself winless in over 10 months; finished more than 5 lengths behind FORCES OF DESTINY in the ESR Figwood Derby in November; stepping out into open company LTO for a fast closing 3rd place finish in the Always Improving Turf Challenge combined with the conditioning of the red hot casino stables distinguishes this ENG bred as a major player in the Saturday feature…chance off best

MY ONLY VIRTUE – trained and owned but yours truly, the 5-Year Old Brown Horse by New Approach out of G1 winning mare MEET THE NEW BOSS (Street Boss) got “off the schneid” LTO, breaking a year-long losing streak with an Allowance win against Local breds in Berkshire after a 3-month layoff; the ENG bred has struggled at the Stakes level and his Local win in his last start is hardly a vote of confidence against this field, but he does run well at this distance in his second start off the layoff…needs top effort

DEVONIAN CADET – the 4-Year Old Bay Colt by Deep Impact out of the multi-stakes producing mare CADET’S QUEEN (Forty Niner) races for the leading connections of the ESR Residency, the cadet racing stables; the JPN bred colt rode a two-race winning streak into his Stakes debut in the Slew Can Turf Route, and a dismal performance did not deter his connections from getting this 4yo to reach his full potential when he scored a stubborn victory in the Abstract Class Turf Route in his following start; enters uncharted territory in the 11-furlong feature, but is bred for the distance and is coming off the best race of his career…dangerous

IVAN L – the 5-Year Old Bay Horse by Bernardini out of the Stakes winning PONCE (Candy Ride) is making his Stakes debut for the ivanyamil racing stables; the KY bred has raced competitively throughout Allowance conditions, with an occasional dip into the claiming levels, finishing ITM in 17 of 23 career starts while finishing off the board  only four times in fourteen starts at a distance of 10-furlongs or longer; has to overcome a distinct class disadvantage, but the 5yo always brings his “A” game when he enters the starting gate…happy with part

ASSAMESE – the 4-Year Old son of Teofilo out of a Cape Cross mare hopes to bring the aladar racing stables their first ESR Residency victory; claimed for $100k in March, it was clear his new connections had a remedy for his previous racing inadequacies when the non-winner of 3L was asked to go 11-furlongs for the first time against better rivals and finished a determined second while posting a career best 104 speed figure; still has a lot of work left to do, but is certainly heading in the right direction…must show more

MAYBRY’S STRIKE – the 4-Year Old Light Grey New York bred by Maybry’s Boy out of a Smart Strike mare might be the most intriguing horse in this field; at first glance of the past performances one might think this Colt is all over the map, but upon closer review it becomes obvious that the ace trained NY bred is a versatile runner that faces almost every challenge that is presented to him, competitive at the Open Company Stakes level at intermediate distances, the 4yo has dominated Local breds on Turf and Dirt at longer distances, and his 3rd place finish in the Locomotion Interruption LTO proves he is not intimidated by top ESR runners…might surprise

KITTEN’S PARADE – the 5-Year Old Chestnut Gelding by Leading the Parade out of the Stakes producing mare PULLEY (Kitten’s Joy) races under the red polka dotted colors of the tonyalb racing stables; the FL bred has turned in two solid performances at high level Starter Allowance conditions since being gelded and returns to longer distance races where he is ITM in 7 for 10 starts in races of 10-furlongs and longer; makes his first Stakes appearance off a series of 10 consecutive triple digit performances, but the long time claimer would have to run a career best to be a factor in this field…overmatched

FORCES OF DESTINY faced the highly rated BROKEN NAILS in his last start, raced in tandem with him during the first two calls of the race, started his drive with the multi-graded winner, but failed to match strides in the stretch as he faltered coming for home. Meets no such opponent here and should make amends. SWAP gets the class edge in this field, but I’m not convinced the PA multi-graded stakes winner is that same horse, but then he doesn’t have to be with these. MAYBRY’S STRIKE is hard to rule out here based on his consistency and versatility.  He is certainly capable of a big effort.  DEVONIAN CADET looks like the lone speed in this field and if left unattended might be hard to catch. NATE THE SKATE enters the field off a top effort while MY ONLY VIRTUE appears to be a notch below rest.

FORCES OF DESTINY – returns to his winning ways this level

DEVONIAN CADET – speed kills

SWAP – class edge, best if fit

  4. Thumbs up, thanks Pete.

Who would have ever guessed you’d get to write “class” and “beisbol” in the same sentence?

  5. GO NATE GO! LOL— With all these NY bred races coming up, I better hit the board when i can. Because soon enough i will be changing from “casino stables” to “titanic stables”……Another classic article Pete, Good Luck Everyone.

  6. I agree. Best rez. Best writer. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Even weeks like this where I have no dog in the fight, it is great fun to follow my fellow trainers’ exploits. Thanks, Pete!
