From Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore,  Maryland,  the Elite Racing Club puts on the middle jewel of its Triple Crown series,  the ERC Preakness Derby.  A bit of trivia: historic Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes®, first opened its doors on October 25, 1870, making the Baltimore track the second oldest racetrack in the nation behind Saratoga, which debuted in 1864.
.
A select field of six club runners,  including a lone filly who boasts the most wins in the group,  will battle it out at the same distance and conditions as its famous namesake for the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse up for grabs,  and to be the focus of the wild post race celebration that always follows these ERC events.  Five of the entrants will be trying to deny dontbetonme’s ERC Kentucky Derby victor ROBERTO CAERLEON from attaining the second leg of the ERC Triple Crown.
.
Those looking to spoil a possible Triple Crown sweep include our club honchos’ entries – jbcri’s recent $7,500 claim,DUNADEN STAR,  and amir’s ghostly roan colt,  CARPE PRADO.  Harrylan and summerset saddle well bred stretch runners,  TACTICAL TASK and TAP FAP respectively;  and johnkarczewski sends out an impressive,  upstart filly,  WINDSOR TERRACE,  who has won five of her seven races,  prompting the handicapper to make her a co-favorite on the morning line.
.
The dirt oval should be fast for post time,  as the heavy rains cleared out in enough time Friday to let the track dry.  Let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see what we can see.  And we’ll all be rooting on amir’s MONSTROUS CAUSE in the featured Middle Jewel Stakes later in the day.

DUNADEN  STAR                                        ENG     3G     jbcri57             L Radzinski     6/1
.
Leading them out of the paddock is this former $7,500 claimer,  who was a front running 2nd first off the claim at 8.5 furlongs in a $75,000 starter allowance,  zapping a 98 SP#.  Dunaden dude,  out of the sim mare Twice Starred (by Twice Over) easily wired  that $7,500 claimer at 8.25 panels,  zinging a 93 SP# in his first dirt try.  One before that,  brown gelding  tired to 5th in the 2017 Liken It Local Phase II listed stakes at 8.5 furlongs on the green,  zipping an 85 SP# after prompting the early pace.  Speedster from the jbcri57 racing group may help soften up ROBERTO CAERLEON for the deep closers,   but looks like he’ll have a tough time holding on down the lane.

ROBERTO  CAERLEON                        JPN     3M     dontbetonme9         T Ace         7/2
.
ERC Kentucky Derby champ continues his ERC Triple Crown quest after a front running victory over a “good” surface,  popping a 96 SP# in his second dirt outing.  Bay colt tuned up for his big win with a nice hot race allowance score at this route,  punching a 91 SP#  prompting the early leader.  Scratch bred King Kamehmeha killer (by Caerleon)   was 3rd one back of that in a NW2x allowance at 6.5 panels on the weeds,  pegging a 94 SP# after an early pace duel.  Runner from the dontbetonme9 barn gets little respect from the handicapper as the fourth choice on the morning line;  shortens up a bit,  may prove tough to catch again.

CARPE  PRADO                                           KY     3M     amir1606         W Smith     8/1
.
Scratch bred Carpe Diem cutup (by El Prado) closed well for 2nd in latest,  a NW3L allowance at this distance,  nailing a 96 SP#.  In his prior try,  at the same trip and in the same conditions,  he settled for 3rd,  notching a 96 SP# behind a runaway winner.  He broke his maiden one back of that in a hot race allowance at 10 furlongs,  nabbing an 82 SP# from the middle of the pack.  Roan colt from the sprawling amir1606 stable is one of the late runners in here hoping for some zip in the early fractions;  makes first stakes attempt,  may be along for a minor share on top try.

TACTICAL TASK                                         KY     3M     claimerz3         G Owans     5/2
.
Hailing from the claimerz3 barn of the summerset racing group is this scratch bred City Zip caballero (by Encosta De Lago),  who got up for his third straight win in a NW3L allowance at this trip,  crushing a 107 SP# in a mid pack run. Spectral roan colt easily won a NW2L allowance at 9 panels in his prior start,  crashing a 106 SP# from back in the pack.  He got his first win in an open maiden at 8.5 furlongs one before that,  getting up late with a 92 SP# from a difficult post.  Another of the late runners looking for some up front pace to set up their late kick;  improving sort makes first stakes try,  handicapper likes his chances listing him as the co-favorite on the morning line.

TAP  FAP                                                            KY     3M     harrylanlow37         T Sterling     3/1
.
Light grey colt showed good late foot getting 2nd in a NW3L allowance at this route last time over,  rocking a 101 SP# from back in the pack.  Scratch bred Tapit tomcat (by Danzig) flew down the straight for 3rd in the same condition at  9 panels in his previous try,  ripping a 96 SP# moving from last of ten.  One before that he took a NW2L allowance st 8.5 furlongs,  racking up a 95 SP# with a furious late run.  Improving stretch runner from the harrylanlow37 barn is in same boat as other late runners in this heat;  could be right there at the finish if the speed backs up in the lane.

WINDSOR  TERRACE                           KY     3F     johnkarczewski30     H M Murdock     5/2
.
Watching them all enter the track is this striking bay filly,  who was a fair 4th in the Otto Causes listed stakes at 9 furlongs against the boys last out,  smoking a 107 SP# on a “good” surface.  Scratch bred Orb looker (by Summer Squall) won the Sophomore Challenge Stakes at 9 panels one back of that and beating six males,  smashing a 102 SP# from just off the early leaders.  She was 3rd in her first run against older males in her prior try in a hot race allowance ,  also at 9 furlongs,  stabbing a 94 SP# but ending her undefeated record at four.  Owner/trainer johnkarczewski30 tries her against males again;  could get the jump on the deep closers in the sprint to the wire as the co-favorite of the handicapper.

  1. Congratulations to dontbetonme and the winning connections on a powerful, dominating triumph. So much for the handicapper’s opinion ! Nice finish by summerset’s closer for the place.

Final time of 1:54:70 compares very favorably with the Middle Jewel winner’s 1:54:60.

See y’all in three weeks in New York.
