A field of ten older Fillies and Mares will enter the New York starting gate in the $100,000 ESR Pancake Batter Anomaly.  The race will be run at a Mile and One-Sixteenth over the Dirt Course.

ZAPSIZE – the trotter1 trained 5-Year Old Bay Mare by Ghostzapper out of the Stakes winning mare CAPSIZE (Elusive Quality) enters this field off back-to-back victories, the last in the A. P. Clone Dirt Mare Challenge where she tied a career best 110 speed-figure; the talented KY bred hasn’t race this short a distance since her first start as a 3yo back in January of 2015, and although top rated in this field, she might find herself looking for more racetrack as they turn for home…one to beat

HEAVEN’S HAWK – the 4-Year Old Brown Filly by Deep Impact out of the Stakes winning mare HAWK’S SWEET SONG (A.P. Indy) is making her 2017 racing debut; after careful placement early in her 3yo campaign, the kingab trained JPN bred filly finished off her 3yo campaign with three stakes appearances, finishing 3rd in the first two before passing tired horses and settling for 4th in the Jerrys Turks Dirt Mare Memorial in her final start; the capable 4yo is another that might prefer added ground and may be in need a start off of a six month layoff to turn in a top effort…dangerous if ready

SPECTACULAR SPA – the itch trained 4-Year Old Bay Filly by English Channel out of Stakes winning mare SHED NO TEARS (Redoute’s Choice) enters this field off a solid effort in the 9-furlong ESR Raiders Minimization Stakes where she finished 3rd posting an impressive 113 speed figure; the KY bred 4yo has taken her game to the next level since being switched to the Dirt Course and should benefit the most with the turnback to one mile and a sixteenth…main threat

LAKE PLACID GOLD – the impeccably bred 4-Year Old Light Grey Filly by Medaglia D’Oro out of a A.P. Indy x Mr. Prospector mare turned in a career best race LTO when she crushed an Allowance non-winners of five while posting an eye-popping 114 speed figure, 19 points higher than her previous best; she will have to prove that her performance wasn’t aided by the sloppy going, but either way it is hard to dismiss such and outstanding effort…your call

BIG ARCH CADET – the 4-Year Old Bay Filly by Arch out of the Stakes winning mare PROJECT CADET (Storm Cat) enters this field off a sharp win in an Allowance NW3x LTO where she posted a career best 112 speed-figure; the cadet trained KY bred does her best racing at the mile and one-sixteenth distance and appears more poised for her second Stakes appearance than she might have been in her stakes debut in only her third start…never better

AN EMPTY COUNTRY – the spinround trained 4-Year Old Bay Filly by Smart Strike out of a Summer Squall x Deputy Minister mare is making her Stakes debut in the ESR feature; the lightly raced KY bred turned in two nicely run preps for her inaugural, posting a pair of 105 speed figures indicating to her connections she is ready for the next step; gives way in experience which could ultimately lead to her downfall on Saturday, but the race should provide a good barometer to this talented filly’s future…might surprise

GRITSENKO – the ace trained 5-Year Old Bay Mare by Bodemeister out of the G2 winning mare WALLY’S DEHERE (Dehere) is a Stakes winner and the only entry in the field to be Graded Placed, that coming in the G2 Good Times Handicap  in 2015; with a promising future ahead, the KY bred Mare struggled in 2016 winning in just one start before a series of well beaten losses; freshened three months before her 2017 campaign, the 5yo found the winners circle for the first time in over a year while posting a 107 speed figure in her 2017 debut and followed that up with a pair of triple digit performances despite finishing off the board; to say this Mare is all the way back would be overstating the facts, but she does have back class and knows how to come up big in big starts…chance off best

ZOMBIE RAGS – the 5-Year Old Bay Mare by Union Rags out of the Stakes winning mare PENTAGRAM (Awesome Again), Dam to the G3 winning MEDULLA OBLONGATA races in the interest of the casino stables; the past performances of this one time claimer immediately catch your eye displaying 5 wins and 3 seconds in her last 8 starts while boasting triples digit speed figures for each performance; the imposing KY bred did struggle at two-turn distances at the Allowance level and it is hard to say that she has overcome that shortcoming with a pair of wins at a Mile at the Starter level; can’t easily dismiss a with this kind of form and if she has two turns worked out at this level she could be a factor…mustn’t ignore

NORTH AND SOUTH – first of two from the aladar racing stables, the 5-Year Old Bay Mare by Pure Prize out of a Hermitage mare has been either first or second in 10 of 16 career starts; the 5yo mare has done her best racing in sprints performing equally as well over Dirt and Poly surfaces but has struggled badly in two turn races not distinguished as a HOT Race; a winner in her last four starts has her racing in top form, but she is faced with a tough task here on Saturday…must show more

MUNNINGS ACADEMY – the second entry from the aladar racing stables, the 6-Year Old Roan Mare by Munnings out of Daylami mare is the elder statesman of the field; winner of 9 of 18 starts, 7 of which have come over the Turf Course; given her two-turn ability, the KY bred appears to be the better half of the aladar entry, but a narrow loss to her entry mate in her last start might dismiss that notion; another top Hot Race performer, it is hard to back a runner outside that level of competition…in tough

This week’s ESR Stake Race appears to be just as competitive as previous ESR features.  While there isn’t a great deal of separation in Class in this field, there are horses running against the grain in a field that should favor the early pace setters.  BIG ARCH CADET should set the early fractions, and if left unattended will turn this race into a battle for Place.  AN EMPTY COUNTRY and SPECTACULAR SPA might be the closers best hope of keeping the pace honest, but SPECTACULAR SPA is more than capable of reeling in the leader without anyone’s help while AN EMPTY COUNTRY could be victimized by the fast pace.  ZAPSIZE and HEAVEN’S HAWK would benefit the most from a rapid early pace, but both appear to want more ground while the latter also deals with a long layoff.  LAKE PLACID GOLD is the unknown factor here, was she as good as that last race indicates?

The Picks

SPECTACULAR SPA – gets the job done

ZAPSIZE – must stay close

BIG ARCH CADET – one to catch

I was thinking maybe I could help with your coverage of the starter series. Want to split the six races, three apiece?
