A field of eleven New York Bred Colts and Geldings will enter the New York starting gate in the $100,000 ESR Silence in the Library. The race will be run at Seven Furlongs over the Dirt Course.

“All of you, turn around, get back in you rocket and fly away. Tell your grandchildren you came to the Library and lived. They won’t believe you.”

STRATEGY PLANNED – toss out the last two starts over the Turf Course for the kimugle trained 3-Year Old Bay Colt by Dr. Large, he wanted nothing to do with the green; the winner of the Sulphur Dirt Juvenile makes his first start over the Dirt Course against Local Breds and should welcome his return to the Dirt against a field he has a leg up on…main rival

AWESOME TROUBLE – the kingab trained 3-Year Old Bay Colt by Alpha out of the G3 winning mare TROUBLE MY WAY (Awesome Again) makes his first appearance upon the Local Bred scene; back-to back Allowance wins with improving speed figures has this NY Bred in peak condition for his first Stakes appearance, and although he seems to be locked in at 6.5 furlongs, a switch to the local circuit might be all that is needed to get that extra half furlong…dangerous

PILGRIMS R DEVILS – the 3-Year Old Bay Colt by Fiddlers Afleet out of a Lion Heart mare has been the model of consistency for the jrm racing stables finishing first or second in 7 of 9 career starts; just missed by a head in his last start against Open Company Allowance and is first or second in all 4 starts at the Local level; nit-picking here, but his speed figures are a notch below the main competition here, and ultimately, I think this NY Bred is destined for the Turf…chance off best

SECURITAS DEPOT – is the first of two trotter trained entries in this field; the 3-Year Old Light Grey Colt by Bank Heist out of a Mineshaft mare is one of five horses in this field to have raced in the ESR King of New York Challenge as a two-year old and the least successful of the group; the NY Bred has shown vast improvement since the series with 2 wins and 2 seconds in the 4 starts to follow and a career best 97- speed figure his last start could have poised for a top effort…in top form

THE CADET GUY – the cadet trained 3-Year Old Light Grey Colt by The Lumber Guy out of the Stakes placed mare GOLD WAR SLEW (Seeking the Gold), Dam of the G3 winning HARD SIX CADET, has been on a tear in his 3yo campaign winning four straight starts at the Local level before earning a start in the G3 Grunt in his last start where he finished a well-run 4th; that combined with back-to back triple digit speed figures in his last two starts is what sets him apart from the rest of this field…one to beat

PLAYA MAYA – the 3-Year Old Bay Colt by Al Khali out of a Gone West mare, races in the interest of the 2017 winning trainer of the New Yorker, pointblank; a finalist in the ESR King of New York Challenge Stakes, the NY bred took his shot at the Derby Trail, but sound defeats in the G3 Gary Asher Memorial and the G2 Land’s End had him switch directions back to the Local circuit where he quickly made good use of that experience with back-to back victories at the Local level and looks well-placed for a top effort here…fits well here

MILFSHAKE – the lightly raced 3-Year Old Brown Colt by Comeonmom out of the Stakes winning mare COSTLY CUCHI (Encosta De Lago), Dam to the G1 winning BOHEMIAN MERCURY, was the second place finisher in the ESR King of New York Challenge Stakes before stepping out of NY Bred company to turn in a solid effort in an Open Allowance before a well-meant 4th place finish in the Northern Slew Dirt Route LTO; the beisbol trained NY Bred was best of the six that raced in the King of New York Challenge finals and has done nothing to make you believe he has lost a step going forward…chance if ready

OPERATION NEPTUNE – claimed back in March by the valesa racing stables for $25k, the 3-Year Old Light Grey NY Bred by Normandy Invasion out of a Distorted Humor mare was straightaway gelded by his new connections and returned to the races paying immediate dividends with a win in Open Allowance company; returns to the Local circuit after three starts in Open Bred Allowance and should feel quite at home as he returns to a winning level…might surprise

PARTYZAPPER – is the second of the two trotter trained entries in this field, the 3-Year Old Brown Colt by Desert Party out of a Ghostzapper mare is perhaps the better of the two entries but also failed to make the finals of the King of New York Challenge finishing second in the final Group race; turns back to a sprint after six consecutive routes and the speedy NY Bred would have to hit another gear to compete with these…must not falter

BEEN ON A BINGE – the 3-Year Old Brown Colt by Here Comes Ben out of an I’ll Have Another mare was another finalist in the King of New York Challenge but was outrun to finish 7th in that field; the casino trained NY Bred has struggled at this level at the NW2L condition until he turned in a solid effort in Open Allowance against Local Breds where he finished 2nd with a career best 96 speed figure, that combined and with a turnback into a sprint might provide the winning formula…must show more

CAT FORBESthe 3-Year Old Light Grey Colt by Mission Impazible out of Storm Cat mare makes his first start since January and also his first start against NY Bred competition; the nycowboy connections are hoping the layoff combined with the drop in class returns this well thought of Local Bred to the early 2yo form where he impressed favorably in his first two career starts…in tough

Wow, from a handicapping point of view, this might be the toughest ESR race we have had yet.  This is a very nice field of Local Breds, with five of them coming out of the King of New York Challenge while others have made their mark in Open Bred Stakes.  There is plenty of pace in the race with several horses vying for the early lead with MILFSHAKE and PARTYZAPPER carrying most of the load.  Ultimately MILFSHAKE will have the target on his back and the one the rest will be keeping in their sight.  His second-place finish in the King of New York Challenge and his subsequent starts separates him from the others that participated in that challenge.  THE CADET GUY is clearly a much better horse than those claiming / starter races might suggest, and his 4th place finish in a G3 last out makes him a major player in this field. PLAYA MAYA and AWESOME TROUBLE are certainly capable of winning this race with the edge going to PLAYA MAYA who has been dominant since his exit from the Derby Trail.  STRATEGY PLANNED is the top ranked horse in this field and as I examined his PP’s I thought I had already found the winner in this race, bus as I moved on down the line I began to realize this is a tough field, wide open for opportunity.

The Picks

THE CADET GUY – back-to-back trip digits off a G3, hard to go against

PLAYA MAYA – made winning against locals look easy

MILFSHAKE – may need a start

STRATEGY PLANNED – welcomes return to the Dirt

  1. Hold on there Donnyy B. Awesome Trouble is Kingab’s horse and the last time I looked ( about 2 minutes ago to make sure ) Kingab was the leading esr trainer. That being said I hope you get your wish. LOL Thanks for another great write-up Pete.

  2. Awesome Trouble looks like the kind who’ll throw a massive number off two easy wins in open company. Gotta let someone win besides Cadet & Pointblank :)
