From Woodbine Racetraxk in Toronto,  Ontario,  Canada we bring you the Grade 2 event,  The Dancing North Cup.   A field of eight older males will battle it out over 12 furlongs (or ~2400 meters for the metric set) for the winner’s share of the $375,000 purse on tap,  and for the right to enjoy the spot light of the post race festivities.
.
A little racing trivia (courtesy of Wikipedia): the current Woodbine facility was opened in 1956. It has been extensively remodeled since 1993, and since 1994 has three racecourses. Woodbine is the only horse racing track in North America which stages, or is capable of staging, thoroughbred and standardbred horse racing programs on the same day.  The Breeders’ Cup was held at Woodbine in 1996,  and the Woodbine facility is also home to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
.
As for our sim competitors,  the field is headed by the “Evil Empire” representative,  BROKEN NAILS,  the lone G1 winner of the group who looks to repeat his runaway victory in this event last year;  the handicapper holds him as the 5/2 favorite.  The only other grade/group winner is blankpoint’s G2 winning WARTIME MANNER;  the handicapper seems unimpressed rating him at 6/1 on the morning line.  A pair of grade/group placed runners,  gcliffo‘s BROADWAY ALY and sender‘s HIDDEN IMPACT,  share second billing at 4/1 odds.  Let’s take a closer look at this field’s history in post position order and see what the numbers may reveal.

First out on to the track is this bay four year old colt,  who ran off with the Colorado Force listed stakes at 11 furlongs last out,  sizzling a 111 SP# making all the fractions.  He tired to 3rd one back of that in the Alyrap Roar listed at 13 panels,  stabbing a 105 SP# but ending a three race win skein.  Harlington hombre,  out of the sim mare Armoured Fist (by Zabeel) wired an open allowance,  also at 13 furlongs,  one before that,  sticking a 108 SP#.  Speedster from the appropriately named frontrunna stable could have been claimed for $20,000 early this year;  he’s the main speed in field full of late runners;  could get his own way on the lead,  very dangerous in first grade/group effort.

Threw in a clunker last out when a well beaten 8th in the G1 The Saint Cloud Grand Prix at this route,  pasting a 105 SP#.  Giant’s Causeway guy,  out of the stakes winning sim mare Just Dynamite (by Dynaformer) won his third straight one before that in the G3 The Honey Do at this trip,  popping a 115 SP# from not far off the early leaders.  In his prior try he got the money in the G2 The Sandy Ray Handicap,  also at this distance,  pegging a 110 SP# in a nice.  late running victory.  Lennyelite protege took this event last year with a stalking run;  that strategy may be the formula for a successful repeat  with these.

Scratch bred Distorted Humor dude (by Sadler’s Wells) was a never in it 10th last time over in the G1 The Coronation Pilsner at this trip,  lucking into a 103 SP# while beaten 20 lengths.  In his previous start he romped home a 5 plus length winner in the Mr Rock listed stakes at 13 furlongs,  lashing a 112 SP# from mid pack.  One back of that he flew home for 2nd in a NW5L allowance at this distance,  landing a 111 SP# from back in the pack.  Bay five year old horse from the gcliffo20 barn could be a stretch threat if in a running mood;  handicapper likes his chances as the co-second choice on the morning line.

Hailing from the durkastan3 racing group is this brown four year old colt,  who came from the clouds to get 2nd in the Orange Swirl listed stakes at 11.5 furlongs,  busting a 113 SP# moving from twelfth of thirteen.  Scratch bred Australia athlete (by Deep Impact) moved too late to be a factor when 6th in the G3 The Honey Do at this route,  banking a 108 SP# in a change of his usual racing tactics.  One before that he was an even 5th in the G3 Pan Americana Handicap at this distance,  bagging a 101 SP#.  How will this one approach this spot – will he revert to his closer to the pace style or try to close from way back ?

DARK  FASPHONA                                    SAF     4M     deepesr22         W Desantis          17/1
.
Variety Club vagabond,  out of the sim mare Fasphona (by Fasliyev),  showed some late foot for 6th in the G1 Movieland Turf Cup at 10 furlongs,  wrangling a 105 SP#.  Bay four year colt took a local bred allowance at a mile one before that,  whacking a 105 SP# from way back in the pack.  In his previous outing he was a never close 4th at 15 furlongs in a dirt restricted allowance with an 80 SP#.  Deep closer from the deepesr22 super stable may be rounding to form,  but  is  oh for one at the trip;  may be along for a minor share on top try.

.
Our other co-second choice comes off a fair 4th in the Lynns Powers listed stakes at 11.5 furlongs,  rocking a 108 SP# making his fifth straight dirt start.  Deep Impact duke,  out of the G1 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare,  Hidden Messages (by Monsun),  closed well for 2nd at this route in the G3 The TV Stakes,  ripping a 113 SP# from the back of the pack.  One before that this brown four year old colt made up late ground to get 4th in the G3 The Alaska Cup at 14 furlongs,  Sender trainee returns to the green where he’s 10-3-4-1;  stretch runner will need some help up front,  could get there in time.

WARTIME  MANNER                              KY     4M     blankpoin4         M Clooch         6/1
.
Owner/trainer blankpoin4 sends out this bay four year old colt off a dismal effort in the G1 The Gold Glass at two miles,  getting a 95 SP# mostly as a spectator.  One back of that he ran on late for 5th in the G1 The Grand Italian at this route,  grabbing a 103 SP# over a “good” turf.  War Front wrangler,  out of the graded placed sim mare Parting Skies (by Smart Strike) went last to first in his prior try in the G3 CEO Classic ,  also at this distance,  garnering a 115 SP# with a powerful late run.  Another from the clouds closer hoping for some early pace;  back at a better distance,  could be flying late down the straight .

Watching them all leave the paddock is this chestnut five year old horse,  who makes his stakes debut off a win at this distance in a restricted allowance,  throwing a 112 SP# from mid pack.  Scratch bred Galileo gent (by Monsun),   was 2nd best one back of that in an open allowance at 14 panels,  tossing a 110 SP# with a similar trip.  In his prior try,  he got to the front late at two miles before settling for 2nd in an open allowance, tabbing a 108 SP# pushing the early pace.  Improving sort out of the gunners2 stable seems to like this trip after long series of two mile races;  should be close early and try to out jump the late comers – live long shot.
