From Del Mar racetrack at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in,  you guessed it,  Del Mar,  California,  we bring you the Grade 1 event,  The Maybe Johnny Handicap.  Some Del Mar trivia,  courtesy of Wikipedia.  When Del Mar opened in 1937,  Bing Crosby was at the gate to personally greet the fans. On August 12, 1938, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosted a $25,000 winner-take-all match race between Charles S. Howard’s Seabiscuit and the Binglin Stable’s colt,  Ligaroti. In an era when horse racing ranked second in popularity with Americans to Major League Baseball,  the match race was much written and talked about and was the first nationwide broadcast of a Thoroughbred race by NBC radio.  In the race, Seabiscuit was ridden by jockey George Woolf and Ligaroti by Noel Richardson. In front of a record crowd that helped make the fledgling Del Mar race track a success,  Seabiscuit won an exciting battle by a nose.
.
As for our SIM event,  a field of nine well matched older distaffers will battle over nine furlongs (or ~ 1800 meters for the metrically inclined) for the winner’s share of the $750.000 purse on tap,  and for the right to star in the festive trophy presentation ceremony following the race.  The handicapper settled on bodgit‘s TEARS IN SEATTLE as the 4/1 morning line favorite,  with harrylan0‘s STREET MILL and mastermelite1‘s ROSES OF PURPLE sharing second billing at 9/2 odds.  These three filled the tote board in reverse order of above in the G1 The Ugly Breeders Bowl Distaff,  right here at this distance in their last meeting.  Let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see if there are any serious challengers among the other six entries.

 STREET MILL                                                 AUS     5F     harrylan0         M Grunhard         9/2

Walking out of the tunnel first and on to the course is this Street Cry stepper (by Nureyev) who  exits a fast closing 2nd behind ROSES OF PURPLE in the G1 The Ugly Breeders Bowl Distaff at this distance,  smacking a 115 SP#.  Talk about consistency – bay five year old mare has made the exacta in all 13 outings on the weeds (7 wins).  She was 3rd in her only dirt try in the W Va Here I Come listed stakes at his route,  sticking a 105 SP# from the middle of the pack.  She settled for 2nd after getting the lead one before that in the G3 Shawnee River Handicap,  also at this trip,  stabbing a 114 SP# in a stalking trip.  Harrylano protege seeks revenge;  could get it late with smooth jock ride.

 COSTA FRIENDSHIP                              AUS     4F     cjt2             J Piotrowski         31/1
.
Encosta De Lago enchilada,  out of the stakes winning sim mare Mateship (by Fastnet Rock).  wired a NW2L allowance at 8.5 panels last time over,  etching a career best 107 SP#.  Bay four year old filly made all the pace when 3rd one back of that in a NW2L allowance at 7 furlongs,  earning a 97 SP#.  In her previous outing she was a distant 6th in a  two mile open allowance,  eking out a 61 SP#.  Owner /trainer cjt2‘s runner getting no love from the handicapper at 31/1;  steps way up in first stakes try since career debut 20 races ago.  Tough task.

TEARS IN SEATTLE                                  KY     5F     bodgit             J Drozd             4/1
.
Bay five year old mare was 2nd in this event last year;  she was 2nd best last out in the G2 Rich And Famous Handicap at 10 furlongs over this oval,  bagging a 111 SP# moving from mid pack.  Scratch bred Street Cry sistah (by Seattle Slew) closed well for 3rd one before that in the G1 Ugly Breeders Bowl Distaff at this trip over this strip,  bashing a 115 SP# from the rear of the pack.  One back of that she was a late running 2nd in the G2 The Saint Ana at this distance at this venue,  busting a 113 SP#.  Stretch runner from the bodgit racing group is still looking for that first grade/group victory;  should get some pace to run at,  will she finally break through as the handicapper’s choice ?

POMP AND GAIETY                                 JPN     5F     kingderek         J Cozier         5/1
.
Hailing from the kingderek stable is this bay five year old mare,  who was last of fourteen behind the top three here most recently in the G1 Ugly Breeders Bowl Distaff at this track and distance,  lucking into a 102 SP#.  King Kamehameha kin,  out of the sim mare I Need Dough (by Seattle Slew),  tired to 9th in the G2 Black Betty Handicap at this trip over this strip,  landing a 107 SP# after showing some early lick.  One back of that she won the G3 The Hill Side Challenge at this distance,  lashing a 116 SP# in a stalking run.  She was 3rd in this race last year as the favorite;  seems to be moving in the wrong direction form wise,  needs a turn around to compete in this heat.

AWESOME BUZZ                                          KY     4F     padrebri10         B Peeples         5/1
.
Awesome Again athlete,  out of the G3 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare All Week Bender (by Dynaformer),  was an even 4th in latest,  the G2 Rich And Famous Handicap at 10 furlongs over this course,  zipping a 110 SP#.  Brown four year old filly was 2nd one before that in the G3 The Mezzanote at ten panels over a “good” surface,  zinging a 108 SP# after making all the early fractions.  In her prior try she was 2nd in the G3 The French Alley,  also at 10 furlongs,  zapping a 111 SP# chasing the winner around the track.  Runner from the padrebri10 racing operation should be close early;  shortens up a bit,  may hold on better looking for that first grade/group score.

ANTIMATTER WEAPON                         MD     4F     wideonturns         Z Ayya             8/1
.
Returns to the weeds after two uneventful dirt routes and a poly track win.  Bay four year old filly was 7th around the course in the G1 The Very Vane at this trip over this strip,  pasting a 108 SP#.  She ran an almost identical race one back of that when 7th in the G2 The My Lady at 8.5 panels,  posting a 106 SP# while no factor.  Friesan Fire femme,  out of the G1 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare Antimatter (by Storm Cat),  wired a restricted allowance at 6 furlongs in her prior start,  pegging a 100 SP#.   Runner from the wideonturns barn has won three of four on the green,  but will need to step up her game to be involved in the decision with these.

ROSES OF PURPLE                                      IRE     5F     mastermelite1         E Seifert         9/2
.
Bay five year old mare seeks her sixth straight victory,  and tenth of her last eleven,  after taking the G1 Ugly Breeders Bowl Distaff at this route over this oval off an almost four month respite,  blasting a 118 SP# from just off the early pace.  Scratch bred Galileo gal (by Kris S),  won an open allowance at 9.5 panels one back of that,  banking a 108 SP# in a stalking run off a three month rest.  She wired a residency stakes one before that at 10 furlongs,  bounding to a 111 SP# in her 2016 finale.  Mastermelite1 trainee looks to continue her winning ways,  the one to beat in this heat.

MY CLEOPATRA                                    KY     5F     desimster         MJ Kelly          6/1
.
Chestnut five year old mare was 2nd best last time over in the G2 The Call For Cash at a mile over this course,  slinging a 109 SP# from back in the pack.  One before that she won the Veteran Snatch listed stakes at 8.5 panels,  snagging a 108 SP# in a stalking trip.  Awesome Again actress,  out of the graded placed,  stakes winning sim mare Urbane Legend (by A. P. Indy),  closed from well back in the pack for 3rd in the G3 The Hill Side Challenge at this route,  smoking a 114 SP#.  Runner from the desimster racing group should be in contention turning for home,  may be along for a share on top try.

GOBSTOPPER                                                    AUS     5F     quilly8             T O’Conner         8/1
.
Last out of the paddock is this scratch bred  Eavesdropper entrant (by Lyphard) who won the G3 The Whole Time at this distance,  digging a 109 SP# from just off the pace.  Bay five year old mare settled for 2nd after getting to the front one before that in the Sland Gram listed stakes at 9.5 panels,  drilling a 112 SP#.  She tired to 4th in her previous outing in the Quilt Jove listed at this trip,  dropping a 102 SP# after being close early.  Quilly8 trainee looks like she’ll be an early pace factor,  but can she hold on down the lane when the cavalry comes late.

  1. Thanks ric480! She always fires, but I was beginning to wonder if she would actually win one of these. Thanks for the great article!

  2. Congratulations to the winning connections – well done.!

Kudos to the handicapper for tabbing the winner.

Thanks roys for the kind words

  3. Thanks for another great write up ric! Street Mill is easily the best horse that I have had in this game. I’m hoping that she can win for the first time this year and grab her first G1. Good luck to all!
