From the Louisiana Downs racino in New Orleans,  Louisiana the Elite Racing Club proudly presents its August feature,  Speightstown.  A field of eight club two year old runners,  including an upstart filly,  will compete for the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse up for grabs,  and to be the star of the crazy after race celebrations the ERC has become known for.  They go six furlongs (or ~ 1200 meters for the metric heads out there) over the main dirt oval and with a nice mix of front runners and late closers,  this should be a close affair,  as most of these ERC meetings go.
.
Club co-leaders amir and jbcri send out late runners (amir‘s the lone filly),  as do summerset and dontbetonme.  The speedsters are saddled by johnkarczewskiharrylantygereye,  and yours truly,  whose debut maiden winner comes up as the handicapper’s choice at 2/1 on the morning line.  Since we’re down in summerset‘s neck of the woods,  he’s promised some Cajun “specialties” for the post race party.
.
Ahhhhh,  two year olds – always full of surprises (good and bad).  Let’s take a look at what the field has done thus far and see how they compare.

TALE  OF  EVIL                                                 MN     2F     amir1746         X Turner         10/1
.
Leading them out on to the track is this lovely bay filly,  who seeks her fourth straight after a stalking score in a local bred allowance at this distance,  zapping a 76 SP#.  Law Enforcement lass,  out of the sim mare Evil Smirk (by Tale Of Ekati),  wired a NW1x allowance one before that at 4.5 panels,  zipping a 65 SP#.  She got her first win one back of that in an open maiden at 4.5 furlongs,  zinging a 66 SP# from just off the battling leaders.  Lone distaffer from the amir1746 mega stable gets no respect from the handicapper;  likes to win and she’s earned the most of this group,  could surprise the boys with continued improvement.

UNBRIDLED’S  BIZ                                       KY     2M     dontbetonme8     E N Thomas         8/1
.
Finally broke his maiden in his fifth try,  coming from off the pace to get the money in an open maiden at 6.5 furlongs over this oval,  throwing a 74 SP#.  Light grey colt came on late for 5th one before that in an open maiden at 5.5 panels at this venue,  tabbing a 68 SP# from mid pack.  Scratch bred Fed Biz fella (by Unbridled’s Song) just missed one back of that in an open maiden at 5 furlongs,  tossing a 66 SP# from the middle of the pack.  Experience over the track may help this runner from the dontbetonme8 stable;  shrewd trainer always seems to be right there in these affairs,  could be along late in the lane.

MISSION  OF  GOD                                        GER    2M     jbcri92             H Desitter         7/1
.
Light grey colt exits a late running victory in a NW2L allowance at this route,  blasting a 78 SP# while never far back.  Dabirsim dude,  out of the stakes placed sim mare Waki Mission (by Mission Impazible),  was 2nd best one back of that in in the same condition at 5.5 panels,  banking a 76 SP# while always close.  One before that he wired a hot race maiden at 5 furlongs,  bagging a 59 SP# in his debut.  Runner from the jbcri92 racing group could benefit from projected contested pace,  may be in the picture at the wire.

SECRET  DEALER                                       KY     2M     johnkarczewski0     L Sanders         10/1
.
Speedster from the johnkzrczewski0 barn led them all the way last out in a NW1x allowance at 5 furlongs,  snagging a 69 SP#.  Secret Circle senor,  out of the sim mare Silver Dealer (by Poseiden’s Warrior) won his hot race debut at 6.5 furlongs,  sticking a 73 SP# while never threatened.  Bay colt will have company on the front end in this heat,  which one of them will prove fastest early and then try to hold on in the straight ?

MORE  LIKE  A  BRIDGE                            AUS     2M     harrylan5         V Jennings         5/1
.
Fleet footed chestnut colt wired a NW2L allowance at this trip last time over,  whacking a 79 SP#.  More Than Ready mister,  out of the sim mare Bridge City (by Bridgetown),  settled for 2nd after a long pace duel over a “good” surface in his previous start,  wrangling a 71 SP#.  He broke his maiden one back of that after a front end pace battle,  whistling a 70 SP#.  Looks to be one of the pace setters of this group;  harrylan5 trainee just might go on with it if he can clear.

SAZ                                                                               KY     2M     ric                          B Coates         2/1
.
Scratch bred Awesome Again athlete (by Wild Again) led all the way in his debut at 5.5 panels in an open maiden,  drilling a 75 SP#.  Runner from the ric stable of this writer has been a handful every morning report the stable sources.  Jumps up to stakes company in his second outing;  handicapper likes his chances,  rating him as the 2/1 morning line favorite.

PHAROAH  CONQUEST                                  KY     2M     tygercubs2           E Seifert         4/1
.
Hailing from the tygercubs2 racing operation is this brown colt,  who tries to go three for three after taking a NW1x allowance at 5 furlongs,  flashing a 73 SP# in a stalking run.  American Pharoah ace,  out of the graded placed,  stakes winning sim mare Sunday’s Conquest (by Symboli Kris S.),  won his debut leading from gate to wire in an open maiden at 5.5 panels,  flinging a 69 SP#.  Second choice of the handicapper should be an early pace factor,  could shake loose and say buh-bye.

HIGHWAY  CRUZE                                               KY     2M     rac3                    J R Golden         5/1
.
Watching them all leave the saddling area is this To Honor And Serve tomcat  out of the sim mare Cruzin Smooth ( by Giant’s Causeway),  who exits a fair 4th in a local bred allowance at this trip,  posting a 74 SP# from mid pack.  Bay colt broke his maiden one back of that at 5.5 panels,  pasting a 74 SP# while always close.  In his prior start he settled for 2nd after making all the pace in an open maiden at this distance,  pushing a 74 SP#.  Rac3 protege from the summerset barn has shown some versatility in his young career,  could benefit from a shrewd jockey ride.

Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.

  1. Congratulations to harrylan and the winning connections on an exciting victory – well done !

The gumbo mixed surprisingly well with the jello shots – thanks summer and tyger.

We should name next year’s NOLA race the “Gumbo & Jello Shots”.

See y’all in Japan in September.
