As we near the end of the breeding season, it may be useful to see how players are using the sires in the game. First we will look at some raw numbers then I will attempt to give some analysis on what I believe these numbers might be saying.

2016 Runners from the Top 20 Stallions in the SIM

  1. Awesome Again – 252
  2. Giant’s Causeway – 278
  3. Tapit – 197
  4. Dansili – 170
  5. Dubawi – 190
  6. Sea the Stars – 213
  7. Distorted Humor – 191
  8. Frankel – 207
  9. Pioneerof the Nile – 192
  10. American Pharoah – 206
  11. Oasis Dream – 160
  12. Medaglia D’Oro – 178
  13. Redoute’s Choice – 157
  14. War Front – 174
  15. Deep Impact – 180
  16. Curlin – 174
  17. Ghostzapper – 173
  18. Bernardini – 170
  19. More Than Ready – 165
  20. Uncle Mo – 166

One is almost staggered by the sheer numbers being bred by these top sires. 278 Giant’s Causeways? This seems a bit excessive doesn’t it? This is a likely cause of escalated speed times when you consider that every single top stallion is being bred over 150 times, most of them over 175 breedings. For sake of comparison let’s take a look at the #80-100 ranked stallions, again based on 2016 class.

  • Point of Entry – 128
  • Tonalist – 98
  • Pierro – 128
  • To Honor and Serve – 105
  • Farhh – 100
  • Midshipman – 100
  • Orb – 120
  • Makfi – 77
  • Union Rags – 98
  • Tale of the Cat – 99
  • Alpha – 105
  • Afleet Alex – 90
  • Special Week – 100
  • Epiphania – 86
  • The Factor – 69
  • Stormy Atlantic – 93
  • Majestic Warrior – 86
  • Gio Ponti – 102
  • Siyouni – 82
  • Macho Uno – 93
  • Tapizar – 97

These numbers are a bit more in line with actual breeding numbers. In fact there is a somewhat eerie similarity between these numbers and actual breeding. Generally speaking the bottom 20% of the Top 100 Stallions are getting between 80 and a 100 breedings. Some of these are somewhat surprising to me. Macho Uno getting 93 breedings? I mean good for him. Tapizar at 97? Gio Ponti breaks the 100 mark? These numbers are greater than first year sires which we will look at below (these are for the 2017 season since they obviously only have 2yos, further this list is not based on performance but upon numbers bred)

  1. California Chrome – 78
  2. Frosted – 76
  3. Nyquist – 71
  4. Flintshire – 71
  5. Runhappy – 65
  6. Exaggerator – 65
  7. The Gurkha – 63
  8. Duramente – 60
  9. Creator – 58
  10. Ironicus – 58

From this list is certainly appears that SIM breeders favor proven success from a stallion over new sire speculation. Even fairly famous stallions like California Chrome and Flintshire are getting less breedings than say Makfi or Majestic Warrior. This was a surprise to me as these new sires are the new and shiny and some of us feel that first year sires are slightly “juiced” to get them kick started.

Finally, are stallions outside of the top 100 receiving significant breedings? Well there are no stallions from #200 and on that receive over 100 breedings. However, in the 100-200 range we do run into a decent number who are getting support.

  • 102. Daiwa Major – 107
  • 104. Oxbow – 116
  • 110. Americain – 105
  • 112. War Command – 101
  • 115. Blame – 107
  • 118. Mastercraftsman – 109
  • 121. Arch – 161
  • 124. Palice Malice – 100
  • 126. Novellist – 105
  • 131. Bodemeister – 106
  • 136. Dalakhani – 123
  • 141. Sea the Moon – 119
  • 142. Savabeel – 104
  • 174. Intello – 102

These stallions outside the top 100 are still getting significant support among breeders. Arch (last year) has a high number and it is interesting to see that even after he was nerfed this did not deter breeders. Breeders also clearly think that both Sea the Moon and Oxbow might hit while Dalakhani gets very strong support.

From the numbers I think we can safely conclude that there are a lot of horses being bred. The top stallions are perhaps being slightly over-bred by 15-20% but this does not seem to be affecting the shares going to the stallions outside of the upper echelon. Dansili might be gettting 170, but Mastercraftsman is still getting his 100. I am surprised that people are a bit gun shy on first year sires. I mean Exaggerator with only 65 breedings? I say that as I have not bred one. Though others like Ironicus with 58 seems to be over performing and Jess’s Dream has 55 (of which I have 4 I think) is getting a lot of support in relation to their expectations. Even Galileo’s top son of this new class, the Gurkha has only pulled in 63 breedings.
