MTK goes back-to-back in Classic

MTK struck again.

One year after winning the Breeders’ Bowl Classic with VOLUMINOUS, MTK returned to the winner’s circle with BIGGEST IMPACT ($18.40).

“It was thrilling to win back-to-back Classics,” he said.

Biggest Impact broke forwardly from post No. 10, then bided his time in third while CADET IN THE CITY ran off to a lonely lead. At one point, he fell behind by seven lengths. That was with a little more than four furlongs left to race, and just about the time Biggest Impact made his move. He advanced into second, then took aim at the leader. In a dominating victory that was far removed from last year’s fantastic finish, Biggest Impact looked like a sure winner from four furlongs home. At the end, he was getting away from 35-1 longshot LOW FIDELITY, who won an extremely narrow photo finish for the place money with LONG WHITE SNOW.

Like Voluminous last year, Biggest Impact did not have super sharp form entering the Classic. In 2016, Voluminous won despite three-straight sixth-place finishes leading up to the big race. This year, Biggest Impact won despite running seventh and fourth in his two most recent races.

“Biggest Impact has been running at a very high level for a long time and was always more of a bridesmaid despite running insane speed figures,” MTK said. “He finished second in the Jockey Gold Cup with a 116, second in the Cal Handicap with a 121!, third in the Movieland with a 118 and fourth in the Sand Castle with a 116. I always had faith he was sitting on a monster win and he picked the biggest race of all to do it.”

Did he ever!

Next to winning, MTK’s biggest accomplishment in this year’s Classic was to enter five horses in it. In addition to three from his regular stables, MTK had two from his former partnership with retired player Laz. Biggest Impact comes from the MTKPlaz stables.

“Laz left the game quite a few years ago now, prior to the victory by TOO MANY LARRY in the Classic,” MTK said. “So, I have been running the show since then. This particular horse had a hemare who was a scratch-bred Grade 3 winner, so it was nice to keep that line winning big.”

Congratulations again to MTK for a tremendous accomplishment!

  1. Congrats to MTK. It is unlikely anyone will ever go back to back again. Great story, Itch.
