When I signed up to report on this race I was rather excited since I was told that 2000 dark colored beers would be on hand for our consumption.  I thought long and hard on how I would attack this venture and It was decided that the best way to accomplish my column would be to finish it while flying across the Pacific.  I knew that once landed my frazzled nerves would be ready for a few of the dark frothy libation which would surely result in a total hot mess!   The last time I reported under the influence it only resulted in a 150 quint…So Whenever I take on one of these jobs it takes so much will power to not tip that first one back…. I long for the days of 3 martini lunches that turn into a couple of good tips and maybe even little afternoon delight if you know what I mean.  Oh Grandpa,  tell me about the good old days!   So without further delay here is what we are looking at in this wonderful test at the 1 mile over the weeds.

1) Shakes The Poet        7/1   SL Ledwith       oldmoonfarmsnew    9 races 4 wins  SW 207,676

This three year old gelding out of a scratch bred mating of Orfevre  (JPN) over a Shakespeare mare has seen a nice swing in speed numbers after a recent gelding and stretched out to nine and nine and half panels.  This is a solid price on a horse improving with age.  The cutback in distance concerns me a bit because I think 10F is easily within his parameters.  I would use underneath in all exotic wagers.

2) Equinics Banner     16/1   M Kelly       desimster                  13 races  4 wins   SW GP  424,676

Placed in the G1 French 2000 Guineas at this distance back in the spring, this son of Starspangledbanner (AUS) out of a Pivotal mare has been up and down this fall after a short summer freshening. Deep closer will need something to run at for him to get a piece.  I’m leaning toward others as he may get caught in traffic down low.

3) Stolen Classic        10/1   T Kelly          mtk76stc                  9 races 5 wins     SW    206,326

After winning 3 of his last four races connection tried him in the G1 The Sourball mile which resulted in a 9th place finish.  This son of Bayern out of a Kingmambo mare deserves another shot at the graded/group level but is Group 1 a little steep.   I  will throw this one out since the 10/1 odds will probably drop with the breeder bowl classic back to back fresh in everyones mind.

4) Harp Lessons       6/1     K Banner      simsters3                14 races   7 wins SW   291,435

After hitting the board in six straight races after being gelded, Harp Lessons faced Gr1 competition in the Queen Liz Stakes where he finished a fast closing fourth after trailing the field at nearly every call.  If he again gets the right trip with a nice pace this son of Muhaarar (GB) out of a Storm Cat mare could get a nice score at 6-1 …  I will use top and bottom in exacta’s

5) Wester                  11/1       W Cahill      sremel                       12 races  4 wins  G3   492,479

During the spring and early summer this Brown colt by Hold Me Back out of mare GP Your In My Space was as sharp as a tack winning the GR3 tetris  stakes in Ireland followed by a strong second Gr2 St James Tavern.   The connections sent him into the Gr1 Jean Brat where he tangled with multiple graded stakes winner No Cause For That who out dueled him for the pot of gold.  After that monumental clash he seemed to tail off a bit finishing well beaten in his last two starts.  Connections are looking for answers on this colt after he showed real promise.  I think he may need a little rest so i’ll toss in this one.

6) Prince Of Terror  7/1     J Ledwith   waremblem6        12 races     5 wins   GR1  925,115

Third in last years Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf and winner of the Gr1 French 2000 Guineas, this Bay son of Dubawi (IRE) out of GR3 winner Hearts OF Iron is looking for answers.  He has struggled a bit in his last three after his big win in the French 2000 Guineas.  The race today he will be facing a fewhorses that have had his number over the past few months.  I’ll use others thinking that this guy may also need a little time to get it all back together.

7) Gendarme LV      11/1    F Gossett    eurobiz                    10 races   5 wins    GR3   277,000

Impressive winner of the G3 untouchable in his last out,  this son of Lawman (FR) out of a Congrats mare is out today to prove his last was not a fluke.  He stalked the pace 3 to 4 lengths out before pouncing in a very impressive win.  The question today is why he has not seen action since that big day in early August.   Did they just give him a little scheduled break our was he ailing a bit after that big score… I’ll toss today

8) Kris My Grits     10/1    L Radzinski    fairhaven10      14 races      6 wins    GR2  587,395

This well bred son of Galileo out of stakes winning mare Kris’s Giant really was showing promise in the early winter and spring of 2017 but seemed to tail off after battling hard in two back to back grade 1′s where he was beaten by a total of 3 length’s in the two races.  After firing a couple of flat attempts gr1 Jean Brat and the STK Freaks turf mile the connection must of thought he needed to remember what it was like to win as he was entered in a NW1s where he walked at .01 to the dollar.  The prep was ran at just over 1:36 for the mile but he won going away with little asking.  Question mark here so I’ll pass off of last few races.

9) Hardiac      31/1       K Ledwith           corza2                    14 races    4 wins     GR1   788,935

In the summer of 2016 this son of Kodiac (GB) was one of the tough early running speedsters who stretched his distance to one mile taking down the one mile High Flyer Stks.  He has yet duplicate that performance and really looks like he needs to find a win to see if it helps him to remember what he needs to do.  Today’s race may not be the place to figure it out.

10) Reliable Erno LV  34/1     M Zeus    bizalls7                11 races     6 wins    Gr3  293,070

After finishing a good 2nd in the gr2  Golden Rose in the spring the connections have been serving this guy a steady diet of of graded competition which has resulted in several sound defeats.  If this horse wins today I’ll swim back to States.  Wait, i can’t swim!   Maybe in the jaws of a Great White.

11)  Se Si Quiere         8/1        MJ Kelly     desimster3      13 races     6 wins   Stks GP   471,520

This deep closing son of Frankel (GB) out of a A P Indy mare is coming out of the GR1 Canada mile where he split the field of GR1 horses pointing to the Breeders Bowl so it was not a terrible showing.  I really don’t think this horse is a GR1 mile.  He is a solid Gr2 /Gr3 type but I think his best distance may be at 8.5 -9F with female side…. Could get a part but will look elsewhere.

12) Colorado Springs  16/1  D Aniel        coatschoice     13 races    7 wins      Stks          264,602

This son of Desert King out of a Hussonet mare has the look of a real nice stakes sprinter.   Asking this colt to get 1 mile against this type of competition may be rather taxing for this distance limited colt.   I may be wrong but again it would be large upset if this guy pulled down the prize.  Deserves a much larger price.

13) Fastnet Eagles   16/1         M Day         bezza 1975        12 Races   5 wins    Stks           213,506

This son of Fastnet Rocks (AUS) out of GR2 winner Vergies Eagle (Housebuster) has ran a couple of really big races when loose on the lead.  This horse is a fighter but has not met any competition like this.   His speed gives him a chance if he gets tough late because they will be coming.  Firm turf may also carry his speed.  The odds of 16/1 are a little sort for my liking to get to excited.   Possible

14) Reckless King    9/2          C Shoemaker   ersholding   9 races   7 wins      Stks        313,800

This son of Declaration Of War out of the fine GR1 winning mare King Snake is looking to cap of a 5 race win steak with a win in today’s race.  Four wins against lesser stakes competition is a questionable to some but deserve a shot in here.  He’s been handle properly by his connection finding spots for him to excel.   This grade 1 is missing some of the divisions serious heavy hitters so i think he’s placed well … I’ll use him on top and bottom today in all gimmick’s

My Picks   14-4-1 -13

Now I’m off to turn my Kiwi buddies onto a little Moose Drool that I smuggled in from the states.
