The Challenge is into week three and this week I had only one runner and that runner will be departing the stable. BARB’S INVINCIBLE who I picked up cheaply in the auction was placed in a $7,500 claiming race on the dirt. He never raced on the dirt before and I was gambling that there was a possibility that the horse might like the surface. It was a worthy test, and a cheap one at that. Barb’s Invincible ran flat throughout the race and finished 7th in the 9 horse field and the speed of 72 mirrored the speeds on the grass, so improvement was no where to be seen. Barb brought no BP’s and a lonely G-Card. Into the auction the horse has gone.
Speaking of auctions, two others were auctioned off this week. Boss Tom was sold for $1. Foolish Voters netted $5,349. Two have departed this week but I did add DANCINGDUNCANKIITH who I picked up in a $7,500 claiming race. This cost me 15 BP’s but I think the investment will pay back quickly. This 5-year old mare has finished first or second in her last 5 starts in a mix of starter allowance and claiming. With the claiming race, she has become eligible again to race in starter allowance at a lower tag value. She’s been first or second 19 times in 29 turf starts, a very nice record.
The stable is down to 27 BP’s with the cost of the claim. I have two horses in the farm right now, one is on rest for a few more weeks, the other can fill in any empty spot I may have down the road in the stable. I’ll probably be looking to add to the reserve bench on the farm for some better runners. The first few weeks in the past versions of the Challenge series have been rough as the initial runners are picked from cheap auction buys and usually are struggling. I can’t wait for the good times to start kicking in!
