A dozen Fillies and Mares 3 years old and older have made their way through the corn fields to the center of Iowa to do battle in the Ferry Dust Handicap.  This Grade 3 race will be held on Saturday May 12th and will be contested over a distance of 6 furlongs or three quarters of a mile over the main dirt track.  The field is full of some talented female sprinters.  We have 7 four year olds and 5 five year olds and not one single 3 year old.  We even have a former Equine of the Year in the field.

A better look at this field:

1- SILENT ASTRAL     (9-1)     youngmc03      H. Head

5 yo Kentucky scratchbred (ASTROLOGY x SUNDAY SILENCE x EASY GOER) she has 6 career wins in 19 starts.  Has represented NWRC in the last 2 EQUINICS; in 2018 came home 4th in the “Casterly Rock” and in 2016 ran 13th in the “Samantha’s Wish”.  In her only other Graded start came in 14th over a sloppy track.  Front runner that has proven to have the speed to be a factor here.

2- MORE WAR SENORITA     (8-1)      rickybobby      L. Habib

5 yo Japanese scratchbred (WAR EMBLEM x EL GRAN SENOR x MT. LIVERMORE) has finished top 3 (with the last 2 being victories) in each of her last 4 starts all being listed stakes.  Finished 9th in only Graded start in the G3 “Iodine Handicap” in September.  A mid pack stalker that has posted triple digits 9 times and is poised to be a part of the payouts here.

3- TRUMAN CAPOTE     (9/2)     jbcri09     OA Haack

5 yo Japanes scratch bred (EMPIRE MAKER x CAPOTE x STORM BIRD). The Morning Line Co-favorite has 12 career dirt sprint wins in 23 tries.  Has won 4 out of last 5 with the other being a 2nd.  Has been unable to find success in first 3 Graded attempts.  Posted a 111 SP last time out in “Destinys Dream Dirt Mare Dash” putting up a second straight win.  This Closer will have to be accounted for at the finish.

4- GONE USA     (10-1)     alishan      O. Brooks

5 yo Irish bred daughter of STARSPANGLEDBANNER out of the GONE WEST mare RIVER OF COLAC has ran first or second in 4 of her 5 races since switching over to the main track.  Was 10th in only Dirt Graded start at the G2 “Virginia Madson” and had 2 Graded Turf starts.  Has a win on all 3 surfaces and a top dirt SP of 107.  Front runner that may be asked for a little too much here.

5- BUCKOF THE NILE     (8-1)     trotter1     N. Bonus

4 yo Kentucky daughter of PIONEEROF THE NILE out of the MEDAGLIA D’ORO mare BUCK THE GOLD has 8 Graded starts packed in her saddle, the last being the G1 “Bluegrass Oaks” last May where she ran 12th.  Has 6 lifetime wins and is on a 2 race win streak.  Has a top SP of 108 and with a ton of experience behind this Closer you must consider her to be a serious threat here.

6- DOWN BY CONTACT    (8-1)     mightyforego      R. Pollard

4 yo Kentucky daughter of CITY ZIP out of the MORE THAN READY mare STUNNED SILENCE has bounced back and forth a couple of times between surfaces including coming back to the dirt here.  Has been on the board in 12 of 14 starts on dirt with 6 wins.  Has made 6 Graded starts on the main track and won the 2016 “Breeders Bowl Juvenile Fillies”.  Had a best SP of 112 and has used several running styles but has shown the talent to contend in this one.

7- WASTE FRAUD ABUSE     (14-1)     ledwith2      V. Gardner

4 yo English daughter of OASIS DREAM (GB) out of the SEEKING THE GOLD mare K’ONVICTEE is the least raced horse in the field but has 9 victories in her 12 starts.  Comes in on a 6 race winning streak ad 8 of 9 since moving to the main track.  Only non-win was a 3rd in only stakes start, has never been in Graded company.  Front runner with a 109 SP and has not lost since 2016, got to a least give her a good look.

8- CALF IMPLANTS     (11-1)      corza      B. Jones

4 yo New Zealand daughter of PINS (AUS) out of the ZABEEL mare PHARMACIST has only made 3 dirt starts the last being last June in an allowance which was also her last sprint where she ran third 1/2 length back.  Made 5 Graded starts on the turf without any results to show.  I would give this stalker/closer a better chance if we were on the turf, just do not see it happening.

9- LANAS     (14-1)     fernando      J. Caves

4 yo Australian daughter of SNITZEL out of the EVENT OF THE YEAR mare CLAUDIA.  If you throw out the last 2 starts both on off tracks, she has hit the board in 9 of 10 dirt starts with 5 wins and 4 seconds.  Put up a best SP of 108 running 2nd in the “Strong Prospect Dirt Mare Dash”.  Ran 8th in G2 “Quote The Raven in her only Graded attempt.  Closer without a lot of big field experience, I will look elsewhere.

10- DEATH IN THE EYE    (8-1)     spinround     P. Cadigan

4 yo Kentucky daughter of CITY ZIP out of the TIZ NOW mare OPERATOR has been on the board in 10 of her 12 dirt sprints with 5 victories.  Last time out ran 5th in only Graded start in G2 “Virginia Madson”, before that blistered a 113 SP winning a listed stakes capping a 4 wins in 5 race run.  This Closer has shown the speed to get it done, I expect her to be in the mix.

11- SLEW OF SMART     (9/2)     kf       BF Abman

5 yo Kentucky scratchbred (SMART STRIKE x SEATTLE SLEW x WAR FRONT) has 11 career wins in 24 starts with 2 coming from her 5 Graded races.  Started the year winning the G3 “Leading Lady” and followed winning the G3 “David Flores” on a sloppy track.  Put up a 114 SP in a listed stakes win in December.  ML Co-Favorite is a front runner that will be a factor in the closing fractions.

12- SHERPA LEPESCU     (18-1)      ace      M. Liddleski

4 yo Kentucky daughter of MACHO UNO out of the GONE WEST mare CRYPT ROBBER.  The ML longshot has drawn the outside post while making her first graded start.  Has 4 wins in 11 dirt races.  Won last outing in the “Gettin Ziggy Widdit Dirt Mare Sprint”, and prior race busted a 109 SP running 2nd in an allowance.  Liddleski has 4 prior rides (1-2-1) all at the allowance level.  May just be out of her reach at this point of career.

I am going to employ the same strategy here in this one and I will play a 4 horse trifecta box with; 3- Truman Capote, 6- Down By Contact, 10- Death In The Eye & 11- Slew Of Smart.
