I took full advantage of the recent Kentucky Derby week auction sale of 2yos and I was a heavy participant in both the bidding and selling. Here are my insights and these might offer some points of emphasis to new players looking at the auction for the first time which can be a daunting task.
Amsterdam Dawn – Revolutionary x Smart Strike x Nureyev. A+ back end pedigree paired with a Louisiana Derby winning young sire who has a great family. I have a SW from Revolutionary and his real life runners are about to hit the track. He ended up going for $598,818 which I feel is about the right price. Unproven sire and a mare who hasn’t stood out thus far but a super charged pedigree which Revolutionary likely has never seen.
Vanilla Kush- War Dancer x Posse x AP Indy. I feel like War Dancer is one of the bargains in the SIM right now and he has a funny, creative twitter account that every fan of horse racing should check out. He is paired here with G2 winning mare Vanellope so Wreck it Ralph fans take note of this young colt. Went for $303,091 which I feel is a steal. Mare Vanellope hasn’t been bred enough for us to know whether or not she can produce so I think this is outstanding value, of course I likely have War Dancer really overrated.
Vanity Fairest- Einstein x AP Indy x Tiznow. A filly a lot of stamina on her back end through Indy and Tiznow. Einstein carries the CA tag for local bred racing. Ending up going for $1,300,999. By my initially only writing two sentences about her you likely could tell I wasn’t all that invested in this filly. Einstein was a C share turn in but I believe she topped a million because she was from an Indy mare. A good example of others valuing things more than you may.
Final Fantasie- Deep Field x Sadler’s Wells x Smart Strike. I was tipped onto Deep Field in one of the BTB breeding articles. I used him for the first time with a big pedigree mare and got a winner first time out. I pair him up here with a Sadler’s Wells mare to get a filly who may be named after a video game series or a lingerie company. Guess the choice is yours! He sold for $1,300,223 and you may say hey that’s almost identical to Vanity Fairest! Which would you take for $1.3 million? I like this horse’s potential a ton but Vanity Fairest has some breeding potential while FF likely does not. A good example of how two different people may value two different things at roughly the same price.
Illusionarium - Not This Time x Pulpit x Unfuwain. I have to be honest, I love this name, I kind of regretted using it on a horse I was auctioning away and almost kept the horse but I stuck with my plan and let it go. I am a huge fan of Not This Time’s stallion potential and have two 2yo winners from him this year. Still want more? That Pulpit mare is a G1 winner. Tons to like about this young filly. She was my sales topper at $1,500,001 and I think even at that price she is a great bargain. I believe she has both race and breeding potential. If Not this Time hits this will look even better.
Malibu Way - Maclean’s Music x Malibu Moon x Dynaformer $5,525,301. I paid a ton for the recently bumped sire and a big time pedigree on the back end. First offspring from mare. I was more comfortable paying $3 million here but didn’t want to lose the horse when I got into the bidding. I overpaid but that’s what happens in an auction setting sometimes.
Aussie Predator - Lonhro x Storm Cat x Pleasant Colony $5,030,001. The dam, Peaceful Predator has produced a G1 winner and a SW. You know my feeling on Storm Cat mares. Love the name. Wasn’t going to let this one get away.
Giant’s Queenway - Adlerflug x Giant’s Causeway x Kingmambo $3,422,229. Another recently bumped sire who got a premium price. Something to consider for next year don’t you think? Getting an Adlerflug x GC filly is a broodmare get as well which makes this high price somewhat easier to stomach. The mare produces high end allowance horses and claimers so a stakes winner may be a reach here (would be the first) so mainly buying a broodmare.
Acid Effects - Pyro x Speightstown x Stormy Atlantic $2,039,621. Comes from a good family, her grandma was a G2 winner who produced 3 SW. This is the first runner from her mom. Benefited from the Derby sale as I remembered Pyro from Derby trails past. I overpaid by about a million but there is speed here and some good latent genetics.
Doolittle Miss - Dialed In x Unbridled’s Song x Gone West $1,625,000. Mom was a high end ALW runner who was stakes placed. Second offspring. I feel like the price was worth it for a sire who I like and who has had results on the track. Makes her a potential broodmare down the road.
Emafong - Drefong x Empire Maker x Seeking the Gold $1,111,111. I think this one was a steal (if you can call a million a steal). Drefong was a beast on the track, and Emma is a top 10 girl’s name. Monster pedigree, dam Empire Dreams, was a GP, stakes winner and her mom was the G3 winner Sim Fanatic who has produced two G1 winning millionaires. A very comfortable purchase point to buy into this family.
Blazing Hot Day - VE Day x Monsun x Seeking the Gold $967,977. I like the mom’s pedigree. I would have preferred to pay $500K but I like the breeding farm . Have never used/owned a VE Day so will get a chance here which is another benefit of the auction which often goes overlooked.
Unbridled Crusader - Greenpointcrusader x Unbridled’s Song x Halo $591,703. The mare, Unbridled Alexa has produced 4 runners, 3 are claimers and this is the fourth so I don’t have huge hopes but for $600K I get a shot at Greenpointcrusader who was on the Derby trail and carries a Florida bred tag. Alexa/Lexa(for fans of the 100),Lexi,Alexandria are all names I like and if I owned Unbridled Alexa (her Halo x Alydar back end is superb and really should work) I would try hard to make her work so I’m going to give her daughter here by best shot.
Russian Snitzel - Russian Revolution x Candy Ride x Indian Charlie $555,256. This was a questionable purchase. Turf sire x dirt DS/DDS, family doesn’t jump out at you. I am not sure how I went so high on this but maybe the horse will prove me wrong. One of those where your trainer raises his eyebrows and says “you paid what?”.
May Fire Sale - Mizzen Mast x Dynaformer x Giant’s Causeway $542,223. Mizzen Mast can get you sneaky good, tough, sturdy horses. The mare, Bail Money has produced two stakes winners. She herself is out of a stakes winner so the family has black type within it. I consider this the ideal purchase, a price point where most can afford, a great pedigree who has produced some stakes winners and a steady sire who can get good horses.
Shaq Diesel - Harzand x Condiut x Pivotal $153,730. My best bargain of the sale. How is this colt under $200K? An Epsom Darby winning Stallion bred to the SW mare South Condiut who has produced a SP runner (by Shamardal). This is her third runner. Maybe Condiut scared off big prices but that worked out in my favor. A good example of what you can get for under $200K.
That’s the sixteen horses I had in play over the auction weekend. This gives you a little insight into what I am looking at/for some of which is quite logical and some of which certainly is not. I really enjoy these condensed sales where you can survey a lot of like horses all at the same time.
