Another overflow field of 16 ERC runners will vie for the third and final leg of the club’s Triple Crown series for three year olds,  the ERC Bemont Derby.  They’ll line up in the starting gate (and the auxiliary gate will again be needed) over Belmont Park’s main dirt track,  to run the mile and a half “test of champions”. This will probably be the only time these three year old contestants will race at 12 furlongs (or ~2400 meters for the metricians)  on dirt.
.
Last year,  we had dontbetonme’s ROBERTO CAERLEON shooting for the Triple Crown sweep;  he came up short in the stretch run,  finishing 4th.  No such drama this year as harrylan’s ERC Kentucky Derby champion TAPIT STREET sat out the second leg,  but she returns in fine form for the series finale.  Stablemate TEOFILO’S WAR,  a fast closing 4th in the Ky Derby will give harrylan a potent one-two punch.  Dunnvilledowns’ KYMAR WALRUS G,  3rd in the Ky Derby at 21/1,  returns after also sitting out the 2nd leg;  she is joined by dunn’s maiden filly STURM SONNENSCHEIN,  who is bred to run all day.
.
Club co-founder amir1605 has the top entry point runner in BLACK KARNAMEL,  a gaining 7th in the Ky Derby,  and gives maiden WINTER DECLARATION a leg up on his stamina pedigree.  Our other co-founder,  jbcri09,  saddles turf claimer WOBBLY RECORD,  and GIANT FARHH  returns to the dirt after some front rumning turf runs.  Dontbetonme sends out a recent dirt winnig returnee THE DEBATE,  who is joined by $3,000 claim SERVICE HISTORY.  TOUTANT,  from the johnkarczewski barn,  is another KY Derdy runner (5th) who returns after sitting out the Preakness Derby.  Unbeaten (4 for 4) hot racer ANGARIARE  rounds out the johnkarczewski entry.  Jb3commish sends out recent winner,  $3,000 claim CRAFTY SUCESS,  and Preakness Derby skipper SO MUCH HIGHER,  who was prominent early in the Ky Derby.  Newfydowns’ pair of SO I SANG and $10,000 claimer SUCH SILVER round out the field.
.
Eight fillies and eight colts go at it again.  Let’s peruse the past performances and see what the figures may reveal.

SO  I  SANG                         MD     3F     downsontherock     J Lowich         28/1
.
Heading up the post parade is this blushing brown filly,  who was an OK 3rd last out in an open allowance at a mile,  sticking a 91 SP# going back to the dirt.  Super Ninety Nine signorita,  out of the sim mare Testimony Day (by Point Of Entry,  got the win at a mile on grass,  snagging an 83 SP# in a stalking trip.  One back of that she was 2nd best in a local bred allowance at 8 pnels,  snaring a 74 SP# ina four horse affair.  Runner from the downsontherock barn of the newfydowns operation may be involved in the early fractions,  nut will need a big step forward to threaten the top ones in here.

 THE  DEBATE                      GB     3M     dontbetonme15     A Jolly             7/1
.
Co-third choice of the handicapper is this Mattmu mister out of the sim mare Lasix Overdose (by Soldier Of Fortune),  who wired a NW4x allowance at 8.25 furlongs on a “good” surface in latest,  killing a 98 SP# in his first dirt outing,   Bay colt chased a runaway winner one before that in the same condition at 7.5 panels on the weeds,  knocking down a 96 SP#.   One back of that he was an even 3rd around the course in an open allowance at 7.5 furlongs,  kicking an 83 SP# over a “good” turf.  First and stronger half of the dontbetonme entry stretches way out here;  $15,000 claim has returned plenty on the investment,  could surprise for crafty outfit.

 ANGARIARE                       KY     3M     empirehouse         R Michaels         27/1
.
Undefeated (4 for 4) bucking brown colt steps up and out of the hot race scene after taking an allowance at 10 furlongs,  busting an 88 SP# from way back in the pack.  Scratch bred Street Sense stepper (by Kris S) went last to first in his prior run in an allowance at 9 panels,  banking a 73 SP# over a “good” track.  One back of that he romped home by five in a 9 furlong allowance,  bagging a 66 SP# with the same stretch running tactics.  Deep closer from the empirehouse stable of the johnkarczewski barn should like the trip,  could contend late in the lane at juicy 27/1 odds.

BLACK KARNAMEL        GB     3M     amir1720         P Nation         7/1
.
Scratch bred Sepoy stayer (by Nureyev) was 7th last time over in the ERC Ky Derby at 10 furlongs,  copping a 93 SP# from way back in the pack.  Big bay colt was a never in it 8th one back of that in the G3 The Rebel Yell at 8.5 panels,  catching a 95 SP# while always outrun.  In his previous start he got up for the win in the Grand Canyon listed stakes at 8.5 furlongs,  casting a 94 SP# in a mid pack run in the slop.  Stronger half of the entry from the amir1605 mega-stable should appreciate the extra distance here;  handicapper likes his chances as the co-third choice on the morning line.

 TEOFILO’S  WAR          KY     3M     harrylanexp         T Sterling         5/1
.
Came from last of sixteen to get a close 4th in the ERC Ky Derby,  ripping a 99 SP#.  War Front warbler,  out of the sim mare Speed Of The Cat (by Teofilo),  broke his maiden in his fifth start one before that at a mile and an eighth,  rocking a 91 SP# in a last to first trip.  In his prior run he just missed with a furious late kick at 8.5 panels in an open maiden,  racking up a 92 SP# from way back.  Deep closer will be lagging early,  the extra distance here should only aid him,  will be flying late in the lane.  Second choice to his stablemate;  tough combo for the harrylan racing group.

SERVICE  HISTORY         SKOR     3F     dontbetonme5     T Ace             9/1
.
Beautiful brown filly was a closing 3rd in her most recent try,  the Dynasea listed stakes at 9.5 furlongs,  zipping a 91 SP# moving from last of six.  Clear Attempt cutie,  out of the sim mare White Cadillac (by Rainbow Quest),  won a $15,000 starter allowance one before that,  also at 9.5 furlongs,  zapping a 96 SP# in a mid pack trip.  Her prior try was an even 3rd in a NW1x allowance at 8.25 panels,  zinging an 89 SP#.  Another astute claim ($3,000)  from the dontbetonme stable  is on the improve,  may be along for a minor share on top try.

SUCH  SILVER                   NY     3F     nearysponddowns     S Chicken         19/1
.
Big Brown babe,  out of the G3 winning sim mare No Such River (by Falbrav)),  came along late for 2nd in a $10,000 claimer at 9 furlongs in latest,  etching an 87 SP# in an  off the pace run.  Bay honey was 4th one back of that in a local bred claimer at a mile,  earning an 89 SP# while never far off the leaders.  He wa a dull 6th in his prior try in a $100,000 claimer at a mile,  eking out an 82 SP#.  The other half of the newfydowns entry from the nearyponddowns barn,  will need significant improvement to factor in this heat.

STURM  SONNENSCHEIN      GER     3F     kennyboydowns     N Stelle         37/1
.
Brilliant bay filly exits a nice 3rd in an open allowance at a mile last time over,  tossing an 83 SP# from mid pack.  Adlerflug athlete,  out of the sim mare Storm And Sunshine (by Distorted Humor),  was 2nd around the track in her previous outing at 7 panels in a local bred allowance,  tacking an 80 SP#.  One before that she was a gaining 3rd on the weeds in an open maiden at five-eighths of a mile,  tabbing a 67 SP#.  Kennyboydowns trainee from the dunnvilledowns group is still a maiden;  this is not the spot where she’ll get her initial win.

SO MUCH  HIGHER         MD     3M     jb3ref             N Lawton         21/1
.
Muscular bay colt showed some early interest last out before fading to 10th in the ERC Ky Derby,  flinging an 87 SP# in his first stakes try.  Bourbon Courage bounder,  out of the sim mare Promises Made (by Empire Maker),  settled for 3rd after making all the early pace in a $75,000 starter allowance at 7 panels,  flipping an 88 SP#.  One back of that he was claimed for $5,000 out of a winning effort,  floating an 89 SP# in a pace pressing performance.  First half of the jb3commish pair from the jb3ref barn should be prominent early,  but unlikely to keep up once the real running begins.

 TOUTANT                        KY     3F     johnkarczewski57     K Moneybags         9/1
.
Fifth place finisher in the ERC Ky Derby had no excuses and tries them again.  Street Sense sistah,  out of the sim mare Chasing Our Tails (by Point Given ) was a nice 3rd at 9 furlongs in the ERC March listed stakes,  nailing a 97 SP# in a mid pack run.  Striking bay filly ran off with a hot race allowance at a 9 furlongs one back of that,  nabbing an 80 SP# in a stalking score.  The stronger half of the johnkarczewski entry  gets a little better post position here,  still needs to improve to compete with the top ones in this affair.

 CRAFTY  SUCESS           PA     3F     jb3offense         D Givins         28/1
.
Southern Success songbird won a $3,000 claimer at 7.5 panels last out,  landing an 82 SP# from off the pace.  Bay filly was an even 3rd in a local bred allowance one before that at a mile on the turf,  lashing an 82 SP#.  She was 2nd best in her prior run in a local bred allowance at 7.5 furlongs,  lasting for an 83 SP#.  Jb3offense protege of the jb3commish racing group makes her first stakes try and first effort at more than a mile;  tough task.

KYMARB  WALRUS  G         KSA     3F     dunnvilledowns     M Imahoff         10/1
.
Gleaming chestnut filly surprised many with an excellent 3rd in the ERC Ky Derby at long odds,  closing from well back in the pack for a 99 SP#.  Stratford Hill sorceress,  out of the sim mare Outback Walrus (by Giant’s Causeway),  was a closing 2nd in an open allowance against males over an off track at 7.5 panels in her prior run,  garnering a 91 SP# from the back of the pack.  She ran on for 3rd one back of that in the Tout Ou Rien listed at a mile,  also against males,  grabbing an 89 SP# in a four horse field. Impressive closing run in the Ky Derby,  should relish the extra trip here;  dunvilledowns runner will be shorter price today,  serious stretch threat.

TAPIT  STREET               KY     3F     harrylanexp         R Wisniewski         9/2
.
The ERC Ky Derby winner skipped the ERC Preakness to be in top form for this spot.  Light grey filly got a perfect stalking trip taking the Ky Derby,  blasting a 100 SP# in her first try against males.  Tapit tigress,  out of the graded placed,  stakes winning sim mare Street Cap (by Street Sense ),  won her previous outing,  a NW2L allowance at a mile and a eighth,  bashing a 92 SP# while always close to the front runners.  She was 3rd one before that in the same condition at 8.5 panels,  bagging an 89 SP# from mid pack.  Part of a powerful one two punch from the harrylanexp barn of the massive harrylan racing operation,  should be in contention on the far turn but can she hold off the late comers ?

 GIANT  FARHH                ENG     3M     jbcri10             J Ledwith         14/1
.
Bruisng bay colt returns to dirt off a pair of “good ” surface outings,  the latest a front running 4th in the Dynamis listed stakes at 9.5 furlongs,  dropping a 97 SP#.  Prior run was a wire to wire maiden breaker at the same 9.5 furlongs,  drilling a 96 SP#.  Farhh fella,  out of the sim mare Lack Long After (by Pulpit),  was 4th at a mile on trf one back of that,  drawing an 83 SP#.  Solid pace factor,  can he go on when others have had enough ?  Speedy type from the crafty jbcri10 stables could always give them the slip and prove hard to catch if left unchallenged.

 WOBBLY  RECORD            NZ     3M     jbcri95             F Gossett         37/1
.
The other half of the jbcri09 entry is this scratch bred  Pour Moi prancer (by Capote),  who may hurt his mate’s chances as he’s another front runner moving to the dirt.  Bay colt tired to 5th last out at a mile on the turf in a $50,000 claimer,  punching an 87 SP# dueling on the lead.  He tired to 4th at 4.5 panels in s NW2x allowance after a game 2nd in a local bred allowance at 5 furlongs.  Should be in the first flight;  first dirt start,  pedigree says can he get the trip;  would be a true shocker if that were to happen.

WINTER  DECLARATION       KY     3M     amir1679         C Ambrose         12/1

Watching them all enter the track is this boisterous bay colt,  still a non-winner after a closing 2nd in an open maiden at 9 furlongs,  slashing an 82 SP# from last of eleven.  Declaration Of War dude,  out of the sim  mare Writer Lady (by Stormy Atlantic) used the same tactics with the same results at the samp trip and condition one back,  sticking an 89 SP#.  In his previous run – you guessed it,  he came from last to get 3rd at 8.5 panels with an 84 SP#.  Second runner from the amir racing group might like this route;  SP#’s are moving forward,  stranger things have happened with young three year olds at this trip.

This looks so much like a replay of the Ky Derby,  what with five of the top seven finishers pointing for this spot.  Will the fillies dominate again,  as they did taking five of the top six placings in the Ky Derby ?   Can the guys prove their mettle at this longer distance ?  Will one of the new shooters step up and grab the spot light ?   All these questions will be answered about two and a half minutes after the gate opens on Saturday at “Big Sandy”.   Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.

P.S.  Sorry I couldn’t get to the regularly scheduled stakes in California.
