The Summer Handicap

Today we find ourselves headed across the pond to Berkshire for The Summer Handicap which will be held on a Firm Turf track as nice very experienced fillies and mares run for the wire in what should be an outstanding Grade 3 event as they go at it at 6 furlongs.  I do not normally write about races of which I have an entry, but today I make exception as there is a story to tell.  I joined DerbyVille back in May of 2016 knowing nothing about DerbyVille at all.  Many wonderful people helped me when I joined and gave great advice as I tried to learn (which I am still doing).  In one of my first adventure in breeding I was blessed with a filly out of the sire Silvano which produced for me Here Miss Kitty.  Everyone has a special place in their heart for their first.  Here Miss Kitty was my very first Stakes winning horse for me and one of which I had bred myself with no assistance.  But I did get much advice from players such as Spinround advising me on races and distances to run her.  So today I break my rule and will be writing up this race today of which I have an entry.  I do wish to take opportunity to thank all the players that have been gracious, kind and helpful to me since becoming a part of this great community of players.  Let’s now go take a look at this very talented field of fillies and mares as the morning line has been posted for this Grade 3 running of The Summer Handicap.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  Empress Wire  13/1                                   rubiano00                           C Byrne

She has been running at similar distances of 6 furlongs and should be comfortable today coming out of the first gate.  In her best runs it appears she does best when just off the pace stalking the leaders.  She has not found the winners circle since back in December of 2017.  In her last outing she ran in the Western Causeway Turf Mare Challenge coming in 6th and was back 5 ¼ lengths at the wire.  She needs to find her legs today against this tough crowd of mares.

2.  Temple Spirit  8/1                                      gcliffo28                              J Diggs

She seems to like both the Turf and the Dirt without much bias and success on both surfaces.  I am looking at her last few outings on the turf of which most have been fairly consistent runs.  In her last run on the turf she went to challenge in the Snooty Fox Turf Mare Special.  She hit the triple digit mark in that race with a 102 as she showed up 3rd at the wire 2 ¼ lengths off the lead as they ran 6 furlongs in Surrey England.  She likes it near or in the front in most of her races and could show up as one of the rabbits in this race.

3.  Here Miss Kitty  6/1                                  tarton9                                 J Ventura

This 4 year old filly comes in off a huge Grade 3 win in The Chasing Carl Stakes in Italy back on 04/22/2018.  She hit the wire running a nice 112 speed rating to win by 1 ¼ lengths.  She likes the distance of 6 furlongs and tends to run at or near the front of the pack in her best outings.  She should be a factor coming for home today.

4.  Dark Dalakhani  12/1                                deeprock55                        J Wesselman

This nice looking brown mare sired by Dialed In is coming off a nice NW6L Allowance win in Texas where she was able to best the field by 1 ¾ lengths against a small company of horses that did not push her hard.  She has had trouble stepping up in most of her prior Stakes attempts.  She will need to find some extra gas in the tank today against this rough and tumble field.

5.  Fastnet Tex  8/1                                          fatattack                              V Vodrazka

This lightly raced 4 year old filly sired by Fastnet Rock comes in to this race today with an impressive career, winning all 6 of her 6 starts.  In her last outing this unbeaten filly ran in Japan in the Witch By Night Turf Mare Sprint where she came from a close stalking position to nip the wire first by ¾ of a length with a nice 106 speed rating.  She steps up to her first Graded Stakes attempt today where she will face tougher company.  Could be a horse to watch for sure.

6.  Going For Gravy  7/1                                 scoregon2                           C Puschel

This previous Grade 3 winner has proven she can show up at the wire in career.  In her 23 lifetime starts she has shown up first at the wire in 10 of those races.  Her last win come on the turf in Delaware at 6 furlongs in the Win Tiger Turf Mare Sprint where she hit a 108 speed rating to best the field by ½ length at the wire.  In her last two races which she ran against Graded company she found not to be very fruitful.  She will need to find that triple digit speed rating again to contend at the wire.

7.  Theophile  7/2                                             imcan                                    E Newcomb

This 5 year old mare and previous Grade 3 winner comes in today with a record of stakes performances.  In her last outing she ran in New South Wales at 6.5 furlongs in the Dash Around Turf Mare Sprint of which she ran an impressive 110 speed rating to get up and cross the wire 1st by 1 length.  I see that Theophile and Here Miss Kitty have met up before.  I see both dueling for the wire against each other here again today.  Look for Theophile to be picking off horses turning for home if she runs her race.

8.  Darci’s Charm  2/1                                      harrylanlow33                   D McKane

This impressive million dollar award winning horse grabs the eye in the morning line and she should.  She is a prior Grade 1 winner and has shown up first at the wire in several of her stakes outings which include her last run in Ireland in the Grade 3 The Bally’s Best Stakes going 6 furlongs where she best the field by 1 ¼ lengths.  She has been running very consistent speeds in the triple digits and looks tough to beat today.  Look for her as they head for home.

9.  Rare Air  11/1                                               gcliffo16                              D Craft

Has consistently been running against non graded stakes company in her most recent prior outings.  She steps up today to take on a devilish bunch in her first Graded attempt.  In her last outing she ran in Norway at 6.5 furlongs and hit the boards on top with a win by 1 ½ furlongs in the New York Nightclub Turf Mare Sprint.  She has shown consistency in her times and she does know how to find the triple digit speed she will need against this crowd today.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Darci’s Charm: The horse to beat and she will be running hard down the stretch for the wire.

2.  Here Miss Kitty:  Will need another huge run as she comes for home.

3.  Theophile:  She has the goods if put to good use.  Look for her.  Needs a big run coming from the back picking off horses.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Rare Air:  The newcomer to the Graded stakes crowd will be hungry to prove herself.  She comes off a nice win and could be a looker here today.
