A Field of Eleven Two-Year Old Colts will enter the Buckeye starting gate for the $100,000 Vice Louis Turf Juvenile.  The race will be run at Five Furlongs over the Turf Course.

AVENGER’S HUMOR – the texasace trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Teofilo out of the stakes placed PARODY IN SONG (Distorted Humor), winner of over $200k sprinting over the Turf Course, makes his sixth career start and third consecutive stakes appearance; the IRE-bred hopeful posted a career best 76-speed figure LTO when he finished 4th in the 6.5-furlong Rubison The Second Turf Juvenile; his Dam excelled at shorter sprints, so he is likely to benefit from the turn back to 5-furlongs, a distance where he finished 3rd in the Once Haunted Turf Juvenile two races back…main threat

FIRE ACROSS TOWN – claimed in his first career start, a $5k maiden claimer, the dydalt racing stables were quite impressed with the newest barn member and entered him right back in the Ohio feature; the 2-Year Old Brown Colt by second year sire Protonico, third place finisher in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, out of a Cape Cross mare, is expected to leave the gate fast, but will meet some formidable resistance in the early going as he steps up in class in his stakes debut…must not falter

SKY HARDER – the deeprock trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Sky Kingdom out of the stakes placed mare  ROCK HARD ELEVEN (Rock Hard Ten) makes his first appearance over the Turf Course; after an impressive debut followed up with a second-place finish Sugar Burden Dirt Juvenile, connections were confident the KY-bred could make the jump to the graded level;  the slow-breaking juvenile found himself too far back and turned in an even performance in both the G3 Television Stakes and G2 High Roller’s Juvenile; despite a distinct class edge, nothing in this Colt’s pedigree and family tree suggests Turf or Sprint…may want longer

BRAZEN ROJO – making his Turf debut for the dkyoung stables is the 2-Year Old Bay Colt by one of Australia’s best 3-year-old sprinters and Champion 3yo sprinter Brazen Beau out of a Roman Ruler mare; the GB-bred has impressed in his first two starts and should improve with the switch to the Turf; Dam was a modest 1-22 in her career, so if this colt is going to be a factor in the Ohio feature it will all come from his Sire’s influence…eligible to improve

FORESTVILLE TED – putting his perfect 2-2 record on the line is the aurora trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Seville, winner of the G1 AJC Metropolitan Handicap, out of an inconspicuous Street Sense mare; the MD-bred hopeful has already surpassed his Dam and one of his two siblings on the racetrack and should have dead aim on a field he can track to the wire…might be this good

PHIDDLEPHADDLE – the kiddman trained 2-Year Old Roan Colt by Kitten’s Joy out of MAMBO CHARLI (Myboycharlie), winner of over $500k in career earnings, makes his second stakes appearance after a 5th place finish in the Atlantian Turf Juvenile LTO; while the Dam was equally effective in both sprints and routes, his entire career earnings came over the Dirt Course, however this colt has displayed some prowess over the Turf Course while exhibiting speed figures good enough to win here…chance off best

WICKED BOOM – claimed for $17.5k by the derekcarlson racing stables is the 2-Year Old Light Grey Colt by Winchill out of a Mulaazem mare; the PA-bred enters the field off a gate-to-wire victory in his first turf appearance, a Local-bred Allowance race at Delaware; Sire has yet to produce a stakes winner and the local hopeful, although improved on the turf, is faced with a tough task here on Sunday…must show more

SUPER DUPER A P – the jamesthedean trained 2-Year Old Chestnut Colt by A.P. Arrow out of a Super Ninety Nine mare makes his stakes debut off a pair of Allowance victories, the last coming in a win over off-track in West Virginia; the SAF-bred does have a win and a second place finish over the Turf Course, but both Dam and Sire demonstrate a preference to the Dirt…your call

CONCRA WOOD – the gowans trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Exceed and Excel out of the stakes winning, multi-stakes producing mare ALAIDA (Speightstown), Dam to the G2 winning GREENWICH STREET, enters the field off an outstanding victory in a Denmark MSW where he posted a 74-speed in his racing debut; the IRE-bred’s Dam and three stakes winning siblings were all victorious in Turf Sprint Stakes…one to beat

WIMILLE – another that enters this field undefeated is the tamure trained 2-Year Old Bay Colt by Muhaarar out of the stakes placed mare MISS DEE PEE (Lonhro), winner of over $190k sprinting over the Dirt and Turf; Muhaarar might be the purest Turf Sprint Sire in the SIM and the promising ENG-bred has the past performances to back that up; will have to improve on his speed figures to compete here, but the speedster is certainly in his element…don’t ignore

HUMOROUS CAUSEWAY – the valesa trained 2-Year Old Roan Colt by Distorted Humor out of the stakes placed SHE’S A SNAKE (Rattlesnake Bridge) has been nothing short of spectacular in his short career finishing first or second in all four career starts, his last a 2nd place finish in the Wonderboy Eamon Dirt Juvenile while posting a career best 76-speed figure; if there is any hesitation in my endorsement it comes in the form of him making his turf debut and nothing in his pedigree suggests a liking for the turf…dangerous

Handicapping the Field

An interesting field of eleven has assembled for Sunday’s Ohio feature, all Two-Year Old’s vying for their first stakes victory.  Though a very balanced field, even the standouts have some kinks in their armor, two horses stand out from the rest of the field.  AVENGER’S HUMOR is the most proficient in the field, has gained stakes experience and should be razor sharp in his turnback to 5-furlongs.  CONCRA WOOD drew past his rivals in his debut and has a family history that suggests graded victories in his future.

PHIDDLEPHADDLE has already dismissed his dam’s Dirt influence and has recorded a pair of 70+ speed figures over the Turf.  Don’t overlook.

SKY HARDER jumps out at you off a pair of graded races, but I’m betting he wants more distance over the Dirt Course.

HUMOROUS CAUSEWAY is the unknown factor in the field.  If the KY-bred takes to the surface, he could be hard to run down coming for home.

FORESTVILLE TED and WIMILLE both enter the race undefeated, with the edge going to WIMILLE out of the turf sprinting sire Muhaarar, however both will have to turn up the jet packs to compete here.

BRAZEN ROJO and SUPER DUPER A P are both in with a chance but will have to overcome modest breeding.

FIRE ACROSS TOWN and WICKED BOOM both exit the claiming ranks and would surprise with a victory here on Sunday.

The Picks

CONCRA WOOD – has the whole package

AVENGER’S HUMOR – locked and loaded

HUMOROUS CAUSEWAY – dangerous if he likes the lawn

  1. Pete, you nailed it. Now what do you think of HC, should I try the turf again? I think he’s done better on dirt, but it was his first time back after a long layoff. I don’t know…

  2. Enjoyed your write up, was looking for a suitable Alw race for BRAZEN ROJO but none would come up in my entry matrix.should do a bit better on turf and this race is not the toughest but place chance at best unless he really bust one out.

  3. Good writeup, Thanks.

  4. HUMOROUS CAUSEWAY was injured after his last race. I had to give him some time off. I was going to take it easy on him and put him in an allowance his first time back but this field looked competitive, IF he likes the turf. Good luck to all and thank you for the write up!
