We go to Tokyo Racecourse in,  you guessed it,  Tokyo,  Japan as the Elite Racing Club presents the Deep Impact.  Nine two year old club runners,  including four upstart fillies,  will face off at three-quarters of a mile (that’s six furlongs, or ~1200 meters if you go that way) over the lush turf course,  which will be firm at post time as marvelous summer weather continues here on Honshu.  There’s a $100,000 purse up for grabs,  and the winning owner/trainer will collect the lion’s share of the stakes bonus points that will ultimately crown a club champion for 2018.
.
Morning line favoritism at 7/2 falls to the johnkarczewski entry from the empirehouse6 barn.  The aladar0 stable filly debuts as the 2nd choice at 4/1 on the handicapper’s line,  while club co-founder jbcri39,  and the always dangerous dontbetonme8 field two of the other upstart fillies as the co third choices at 5/1.  Harrylan runners are usually highly regarded by the handicapper,  but gets just a 6/1 chance in this spot.  Rounding out the field at 8/1 or longer odds are the albertdowns runner from the dunnvilledowns barn,  the ohcanada runner from the newfydowns stable,  the claimerz4 entry from managing director summerset,  and the jb3fumble long shot representing jb3commish’s stable.
.
After a week of sushi and sake,  this writer will be quite happy to return state-side for some home cooking (blackened fish and some cold beer looks real good right now).  As for the race,  the fillies have been whupping the boys of late in these club stakes;  it sure can happen again.  Let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see what the figures may show.

DEPUTY  MAURICE                                JPN     2M     harrylancl         N Tippins         6/1
.
Heading up the post parade is this boisterous bay colt,  who exits a pace pressing 3rd in a NW2L allowance at this distance,  popping a 78 SP#.  In her prior outing,  this Maurice motorer out of the sim mare Authorized Deputy (by Authorized) wired an open maiden at this trip on a yielding surface,  pushing a 74 SP#.  He started his career with an even trip 4th in an open maiden at 5.5 panels,  posting a 63 SP#.  Speedy sort from the harrylancl racing operation should be involved early,  could control the pace from the rail.

DRAOI  THABHAIRT                             NZ     2M     albertdowns         R Scharf         9/1
.
Contributer caballo comes off a nice 4th at 5 furlongs in the club’s May event,  More Than Ready,  banking a 72 SP# in a stalking effort on the poly track.  Bruising bay colt won the Azerley listed stakes one back of that,  also at 5 panels,  bashing a 75 SP# pressing the early fractions.  He won first time out,  again at 5 furlongs,  in a local bred allowance,  bagging a 69 SP# after an early pace duel.  Should be prominent early,  certainly eligible to clear and say buh-bye for the albertdowns barn of the dunnvilledowns group.

 DRAGON  ZOMBIE                                  ENG     2F     jbcri39             E Kennard         5/1
.
Owner/trainer jbcri39 saddles this debut winning bay filly,  who took a hot race at 6 furlongs,  drilling a 68 SP# after prompting the early pace.  Scratch bred Sea The Moon sistah (by Danehill) should be involved in the early pace tussle;  wouldn’t be the first surprise from crafty outfit.

NEWF  AT  ARMAGEDDON            JPN     2M     ohcanada         T Blake             8/1
.
Bay colt from the ohcanada barn of the newfydowns racing group picks a tough spot for initial outing.  Scratch bred Symboli Kris S stepper (by Darci Brahma) has reportedly been a handful in and around the barn and impressed the back stretch wise guys in early morning works.  Japan bred does have “home field advantage” going for him.

LYME  TIME                                       KY     2M     claimerz4         C Roser         9/1
.
Karakonite kutie,  out of the sim mare Nates Girl (by Nathaniel),  got up late for the money last out in a NW2L allowance at this route,  crushing a 77 SP# in a full field.  Big bay colt ran out of track one before that when 2nd in the same condition and distance,  cashing a 69 SP# in a mid pack run.  He took his debut in a hot race at 5.5 panels,  casting a 62 SP# in a stalking trip.  Stretch runner from the claimerz4 barn of the summerset stable could benefit from a projected fast pace,  look for him late in the lane.

 PIVOTAL  CAUSEWAY                        ENG     2F     dontbetonme8         M Widell         5/1
.
Beautiful brown filly seeks a third straight score after winning the More Slew listed stakes at 5.5 furlongs,  flashing a 76 SP# tracking the early leader.  Scratch bred Pivotal papoose (by Danzig) wired a NW1x allowance in her previous start,  flinging a 70 SP#.  Her only loss in four runs came one before that in the Red Tejas listed at 5 panels,  floating a 63 SP# in a full field.  Another with some early lick should make for a hotly contested front end;  could go on with it for the dontbetonme8 racing operation.

 JOB  QUEST                                                  JPN     2F     aladar0         B Wahoo         4/1
.
Gleaming chestnut filly from the aladar0 racing group tries the boys and a stakes race for her initial outing.  Orfevre oater,  out of the sim mare Imamura (by Shamardal) has been wowing the back stretch boys in the AM,  and word is the stable has high hopes for her future.  Handicapper sees something also,  making her the 4/1 second choice on the morning line.

 RFN  LUCY                                                       AUS     2M     jb3fumble         D Davis         10/1
.
Steps up to a stakes race off a 4th place finish in an open maiden at 5.5 furlongs to begin his career,  hanging a 67 SP# after getting to the front at the top of the lane.  Scratch bred Snitzel stripling (by Bullet Train) faces a bevy of early speed types here,  will need to improve her game for the jb3fumble stable to handle the top ones in here.

MESSAL                                                            KY     2F     empirehouse6         I Suzuki         7/2
.
Watching them all leave the paddock is this blushing bay filly,  who makes her career debut.  Scratch bred Declaration Of War debutante (by Dubai Millenium) has impressed the early morning clockers and the barn help sees good things in her future. The handicapper must have heard the word,  ranking her as the early morning favorite at 7/2 for the empirehouse6 barn of the johnkarczewski racing group.

Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.

  1. Congratulations to summerset and connections on an authoritative victory. Looks like a future star.

Fast fractions for these two year olds ( each of the opening panels went in a swift 10.98 seconds ) set up the stretch runner.

See y’all next month – we have the Royal St John’s Regatta on 8/4 ( 2yo maidens on the turf ), and the Nyquist ( 2yos on the dirt ) down in summerset’s neck of the woods in Louisiana on 8/11. .

  2. Thanks everybody. Horse ran well, and a little curious if he will continue to improve.
