Sword Swallower Stakes – 12 Furlongs on Turf

Grade I — Purse : $750,000

Restricted to 3 Year Olds and Older

The Windy City Turf Classic may be the marquee contest on grass this weekend, but 14 long-distance turf stars look to make their mark over a mile and a half in New York. All but two of the starters have already earned their stakes-winner stars, with four prevailing previously in Grade I races. Kentucky-bred Back in the Twos is the favorite at 5/1, with three sons of Frankel joining the list of contenders.

1: Pass the Dro

Owner: silversun26

NOVELLIST (IRE) x KITTEN’S JOY x ELA-MANA-MOU

9/1

First time back in the U.S. since a 10th place finish in the Breeder’s Bowl Turf last season, winner of the G1 Milan Grand Prix in June 2017.

2: Finke Seayou

Owner: nomadic

FRANKEL (GB) x SEA THE STARS x PINE BLUFF

13/1

Took a while to break his maiden, but the longshot of the Frankel babies has won five of six and is quickly moving up in class now.

3: Six Bowls of Wrath

Owner: billzpaid4

FRANKEL (GB) x DUBAWI (IRE) x DYNAFORMER

9/1

Winner of the G3 Stars and Bars last time out, fourth in a New York allowance race back in January despite posting a strong SP#.

4: Running on Evil

Owner: simsters8

FRANKEL (GB) x CAERLEON x KRIS S.

8/1

Winner of five of his past six, the most recent three victories coming in two G1s and a G2 but he likes it most in the rain. The turf will be firm on Saturday.

5: Unquestionably

Owner: corza2

REDOUTE’S CHOICE x DEEP IMPACT x SELKIRK

13/1

His second Grade 1 outing will be a test after a strong run of finishing in the money in four-straight ungraded stakes.

6: Dyed Candy

Owner: jakplummer

CANDY RIDE x DYNAFORMER x EL GRAN SENOR

15/1

A mile-and-a-half is a step down in distance for this four-year-old colt, he won the G1 United Countries Handicap in his only other attempt shorter than 14 furlongs in the last 12 months.

7: Tiz Silent Law

Owner: oldmoonfarmslox

DANCE IN THE DARK x LAWMAN (FR) x TIZNOW

11/1

Another horse that might like the turf to be a bit more yielding, look for him to start from the back and kick.

8: Pivot to the Right

Owner: pointguardb

PIVOTAL x MONSUN x CAERLEON

21/1

Not the most consistent runner, goes off with the longest odds in the field but bagged the G2 Princess of Wales a month ago.

9: Dire Warning

Owner: gattaca

DUBAWI (IRE) x FRANKEL (GB) x DYNAFORMER

10/1

Strong pedigree and race record but has struggled at the Grade I level in two past attempts, will his third time be the charm?

10: Special Endeavor

Owner: db3

SPECIAL WEEK x OASIS DREAM (GB) x RAINBOW QUEST

9/1

Crushed an allowance race in July to stay fresh after winning the G1 Milan Grand Prix at the beginning of the summer.

11: Historical Impact

Owner: mtkdynasty

DEEP IMPACT x SEA THE STARS x MONTJEU

8/1

Will start off the pace, a strong finish in May earned him a G2 star at the Grand Prix.

12: Silvano Heights

Owner: pointguardb

SILVANO (GER) x SHIRLEY HEIGHTS x KEY TO THE MINT

10/1

Grade 1 is a big change in competition from his normal fare, but hasn’t finished outside the top 2 since last September.

13: Back in the Twos

Owner: fairhaven3

SMART STRIKE x DANEHILL x KRIS S.

5/1

The favorite, winner of four out of his past five. Won the Lex Luthor Endurance in New York back in February and was 8th in the Breeder’s Bowl Turf last year.

14: Marechal Lannes

Owner: waremblem6

SIYOUNI (FR) x ARCH x RAINBOW QUEST

17/1

More accustomed to 16 furlongs than this distance, likes to start up near the front but could get passed late.

  1. Thanks for the write-up. Mine threw craps but he was unlikely to hit two G1 in a row.
