A field of Twelve New York Bred’s Three Years Old and Up will enter the Big Apple starting gate in the $100,000 ESR Central Park Stakes.  The race will be run at Six Furlongs over the Dirt Course.

SECURITAS DEPOT – the 4 Year Old Light Grey Colt by Bank Heist out of the stakes placed mare LEGENDARY GOLD (Mineshaft) gets top billing in this talented field of New York-bred’s by virtue of his G3 victory in the Arizona Silver Spoon back in February; the trotter1 trained sprinter has won 8 of his 16 starts, but has proved vulnerable in ESR Residency races where he has failed to hit the board in all three tries; the talented local product makes his second start off of a layoff and is racing at his optimal distance in hope of erasing a three race losing streak…class edge

ENGLISH BARLEYWINE – the first of two from the glennc racing stables, this 4 Year Old Bay Gelding by Golden Ticket out of the stakes placed mare MINER N POSSESSION (Milwaukee Brew) has been lights out against local competition, finishing first or second in the 9 of the 10 Local-bred races he has competed in on the Dirt; an average 109-speed figure in his last four starts stamps him as a strong candidate to record his first stakes victory…dangerous

SUNLOATHE – the second of the trotter1 entries, the 4 Year Old Bay Colt by Alpha out of the stakes winning GO FAST GO (Hard Spun) has been racing in top form in recent starts posting five consecutive triple digit speed figures thus earning him a spot in Saturday’s field; the local-bred displayed a furious closing drive in his last start making up nine lengths in the stretch to finish a close up 4th in non-local affair in Open Company Allowance; the stretch threat makes his first start at 6-furlongs and could be a menace turning for home…might surprise

CAT ABOVE ALL CATS – the 5 Year Old Bay Gelding by Courageous Cat out of a Gulch mare is the second of two from the glennc racing stables; the NY local has done his best racing over the Turf Course, but does own three victories over the dirt; while not quite the same threat as his entry mate, he does enter this field off an Open Company Allowance win over the turf, and has used the turf to dirt angle to record a first and a second in the past…angle play

AWESOME TROUBLE – the kingab trained 4 Year Old Bay Gelding by Alpha out of the G2 winning mare TROUBLE MY WAY (Awesome Again) is seeking his first stakes victory; the local product enters this field off perhaps the best two races of his career, finishing second and third respectively at the Allowance level against Open Bred rivals while posting a career best 113-speed figure followed up by a 107-speed figure in those starts; another that might benefit greatly with a turnback to 6-furlongs…never better

PLAYA MAYA – after struggling in his previous three starts; the pointblank trained 4 Year Old Bay Colt by Al Khali out of a Gone West mare bounced back in his last start when he celebrated a confidence booster with a dominating victory at the claiming level while posting a career best 108-speed figure; will that be enough to get him back to the time when he was a Derby Hopeful remains to be seen, but the last was certainly a step in the right direction; another that is turning back to six panels for the first time and has a closing kick to benefit from the faster pace…must show more

SPACED OUT PAT – the casino trained 4 Year Old Light Grey Colt by Cosmonaut out of the stakes winning / graded placed mare SINGLE WHITE PAT (Gone West) has been doing his best racing over his last five starts, finishing in the top three in all five while averaging a 104-speed figure in those efforts; another who makes his first start at six panels, however he will have to find a way to keep pace early without compromising his stretch drive…chance off best

HER CONCORDE’S – at first glance, the itch trained 5 Year Old Light Grey Horse by Concorde’s Dancer out of an Oedipus Appeal mare, gives the impression of a horse that is racing way over its head, but as you scroll down the lines of the past performances you see a victory in the Knickerbocker Fall Dash Local Stakes back in November; now was it a perfect storm, I’ll let you decide, but he does own a stakes victory, something only three other horses in this field can boast…you call

NYW SLEW CADET – the cadet trained 5 Year Old Bay Gelding by Desert Party out of the graded stakes producing mare OLD WAR SLEW (Seeking the Gold) displays the most intimidating past performances in this field, recording five ESR Residency victories in his career; making his 21st career start, the local sensation proved he is still racing in top form when he willingly drew past rivals in a 6-furlong Open Allowance NY Bred race in his last start; make no mistake, he is the…horse to beat

SHE SAID THAT – the lone filly in the field, the spinround stables enter their 4 Year Old Chestnut Filly by Desert Party out of an Awesome Again mare with the hope of recording her first stakes victory; doing her best racing at the claiming level, the competitive filly did run off a streak of five consecutive victories and has finished ITM in her last eight appearances; can she beat the boys here, well she has finished second twice against them in three starts, and the spirited filly hates to lose…happy with part

TRINNI – the ace trained 5 Year Old Brown Horse by Trinniberg out of a Dixieland Band mare is one of four stakes winners in this field;  the winner of the ESR Victory Speech Stakes in April enters this field off the G3 Birkenstock last time out and has averaged a 112-speed figure over his last three starts; although his best races have come around two turns, he does own four wins sprinting and must be considered a major player in the ESR feature…main threat

TAKEN A DIVE – a sharp claim by the donnyb connections on this 4 Year Old Chestnut Gelding by Majestic City out of the stakes producing mare WESTERN WALL (Bluegrass Cat) paid immediate dividends for his new connections with a convincing victory in a Local Starter Allowance LTO at 5.5-furlongs in New York; first or second in eight of his nine starts on the dirt at the local level make this NY product and interesting contender in this field at any level…don’t ignore

Handicapping the Field

This is certainly a great field of New York bred rivals and one that makes me proud of the New York Bred program we have at ESR.  Handicapping this field is going to be a challenge, but as we like to say at the track, this is a great betting race.

Looking at this race from a pace standpoint, the race appears to be loaded with closers, a great advantage to the least likely winners that possess the early speed in this race.  TAKEN A DIVE and SHE SAID THAT both possess enough early foot to command the early fractions but are likely fall victim to the classier SECURITAS DEPOT and ENGLISH BARLEYWINE, both of whom have enough pace to overtake the leaders at will.  SECURITAS DEPOT and ENGLISH BARLEYWINE will try to make this race their own by putting enough space between themselves and the late closers.

TRINNI has shown speed when sprinting but that was at the claiming level and I think this top contender prefers racing around two turns.

AWESOME TROUBLE and NYW SLEW CADET are the main contenders in this field and pose the biggest threat to the pace setters, both laying close enough to the lead to swallow up the pack in the final yards.

SUNLOATHE is racing in top form and has a strong closing kick and might be the best of the deeper closers.

SPACED OUT PAT prefers more ground.

CAT ABOVE ALL CATS prefers turf.

PLAYA MAYA might have put his best races behind him and HER CONCORDE’S may need a start for his new connections.

The Picks

NYW SLEW CADET – has dominated ESR competition and is still racing in top form

AWESOME TROUBLE – top conditioner has his horse in top condition; do the math

SUNLOATHE – I like the way he is running and think he is ready for the next level
