Not a very good week for the watch list but I still managed to grind out a couple of wins this week. I also had quite a few nicely bred horses debut with some mixed results. Next week should be a lot of fun as I’m entered in my first ESR race (The Lost Sister Stakes) with JUST FOR KAT who was a horse gifted to me by squirrel when I first started.

This week’s Record: 27-2-4-2

Last Weeks’ Watch List:

STREET ASSOCIATE (VERRAZANO x STREET CRY x MACHIAVELLIAN) – So we attempted to give him some extra distance on the turf and it didn’t go much better than his 6.5 furlong attempts on the turf. He’d run 8 furlongs against NW2L 2-year olds and finish 6th by about 8 lengths. Given the pedigree I’m going to move him over to dirt in his final start of the year to see if that helps him out.

GREEN MINESTER (MINESHAFT x KRIS S. x STORM BIRD) -Making the debut at 8 furlongs on the dirt against maiden 50K’s and it didn’t go as planned. He ran well for the first 6 but got tired in the stretch to finish 5th by six lengths. Class cut and possible distance cut to come for this guy.

MEAN MUGGIN (SHAMARDAL x PIVOTAL x MONSUN) – Another who made the debut going 8 furlongs this time on the turf against maiden 50K’s. He ran well considering the 4th place finish but had no kick in the stretch. Despite the 4th place finish he still managed a 74 speed fig making me think he may just need a cut in distance.

COPPER STOUT (DANSILI x MONSUN x MISWAKI) – Ran a great debut race closing from off the pace to get up for the victory. He was given an extra 1.5 furlongs against NW2L’s on the turf and he didn’t run a lick. He’d settle at the back of the pack but never kicked on at any point finishing 9th by 8 lengths and posting up the same speed fig (75) as the debut.

KILLER SHAKE (SHAKIN IT UP x HUSSONET x PULPIT) –“He’s either going to make me proud or bring me back down to Earth.” The result…. I was brought back down to Earth. He ran against some really good horses that consistently hit the triple speed figs and at odds of 37-1 finished 9th. I think we will attempt NW4L’s in his next race with allowance company.

HOMEMADE SCOTCH (POINT OF ENTRY x EMPIRE MAKER x NUREYEV) – Sjmeola donated the stakes winning mare RICK NASH and we bred POINT OF ENTRY to her. She’d go up against maiden 56K’s going 8 furlongs on the turf but wouldn’t do much running. She’d finish 8th by 9 lengths.

GENUINE OUTLAW (CURLIN x HARLAN’S HOLIDAY x UNBRIDLED’S SONG) – after a disappointing 4th place finish in her debut she came back to run against maiden 22K’s at 8 furlongs on the dirt. This one was a much better performance as she ran from about 3 off the pace before making her move in the stretch and finishing a game 2nd place. She got a nice 7 point bump on the speed fig to 76 and will get another opportunity to run the mile in her next.

COMBO BREAKER (CAPE BLANCO x KINGMAMBO x SUNDAY SILENCE) – He finally got over the hump wiring the field in a 5 furlong turf sprint. 4th time proved to be the charm for this little speed ball but we will find out when he runs against allowance company in his next.

SAINT AWESOME (QUALITY ROAD x SAINT BALLADO x AWESOME AGAIN) – After fading to 8th by 3 lengths in his debut I cut the distance from 6 furlongs to 5.5 and gave him a class drop to maiden 22K’s. All those changes seemed to work out extremely well for him and he’d go on to wire the field producing a 77 speed fig.

AUNTIE’S CAUSE (BRODY’S CAUSE x UNCLE MO x T.M. OPERA O (JPN)) – Got her out of a 5K claimer and in two races she’s proved to be a formidable runner scoring a 4th place finish by a length in her first attempt with me and most recently scoring a 2nd place career high 89 speed fig at 8 furlongs. Will more than likely wheel her back under the same conditions in her next.

CHARISMATIC HERO (SOCIAL INCLUSION x HERO’S AND CROOK x CHARISMATIC) – Not only is he a productive horse but I also take great enjoyment in his success based on him being one of the first I had ever bred. He kind of surprised me with how well he ran this week running against 48K Allowance NW2L’s, by far the best he’s seen in his young career. He’d jump out to the lead and almost wire the field before being passed by MANDALA OF CAIRO in the stretch and finishing 2nd. In seven races he’s sporting a record of 1-4-0.

FRANCUA’S ARCH (ARCH x CAPOTE x EL PRADO) – Through 4 races she’s been a bit of a puzzle that I’m just starting to piece together. Her first race didn’t tell me much as this 4 year old jogged around the track to the tune of a 47 speed fig at 8.5 furlongs in a win. In her next two I gave her a go with allowance company at 7.5 furlongs and 9 furlongs and it didn’t go very well for her as the best she could muster was a 4th place 9 length loss. Most recently I gave her a cut in class to 60K claimers and ran her at 8 furlongs where she closed into a nice 2nd place losing by a neck and producing an 85 speed fig.

FELONY (DORTMUND x SUNDAY SILENCE x WILD AGAIN) – She made her debut at 8 furlongs on the dirt against maiden 33K’s and would run decent for about 2 calls before tapping out and finishing 11th by 10 lengths. I think this is just a case where the distance got the better of her. I’ll bring her back to 6 furlongs and hope for the best.

MANHATTAN KAT (MANHATTAN RAIN (AUS) x KAYF TARA x NUREYEV) –I’ve got 4 runs with her and its pretty evident I’m putting her in races that she’s got no chance in. I’ve exclusively run her with maiden special weights and to no avail. The most recent was an 8 furlong 9th place loss by 15 lengths. I’m going to drop her into claimers and hope for some improvement in her next.

LADY ADONIS (LOOKIN AT LUCKY x TALE OF THE CAT x BE MY GUEST) – I haven’t quite figured her out yet through 3 either. She has a tendency to pass the tired horses late in the stretch but that’s about it. I think I’m going to give her the longest distance I can find for 2 year olds on the dirt in her next and see if that helps. The most recent race saw her post an ugly 56 speed fig in which she finished 8th by 8 on the turf.

PLAYA HONDA (BAYERN x STREET BOSS x VINDICATION) – I don’t think I did him any favors stretching him out to 8 furlongs in his most recent as he’d finish 7th by 13. I’m going to bring him back to 6.5 furlongs on the dirt which was the distance he broke his maiden at and hope for some improvement.

MIZZ (MIZZEN MAST x DUBAI MILLENIUM x DISTORTED HUMOR) –He sucked in his debut going 7 furlongs on the turf only managing a 49 speed fig. In his comeback I switched him to dirt and shortening him up hoping he’d suck a little less. The switch didn’t make much of a difference as he still sucked it up posting a 54 speed fig in a 10 place 9 length defeat.

CRIMSON GENIUS (SHOWCASING (GB) x DEEP IMPACT x FUTURE STORM) – I think he’s telling me he doesn’t want to run on turf. His debut saw him post a 61 speed fig in a 7th length loss and his most recent was a 60 speed fig that saw him finsh 7th as well. I’ll give him a go at 6 furlongs on the dirt in his next in hopes that he improves.

Next Week’s Watch List:

JUST FOR KAT (NOONMARK x STREET CRY x SADLER’S WELLS) – She’s out of squirrel’s graded placed mare CRYING SKY. She’s 2-4 thus far winning her last two races and I’ve been itching to get a horse in an ESR race, so I figured “what the hell, let’s give this a shot”.

GARGANTUAN GRAY (GRAYDAR x BIG BROWN x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY) – She’s debuting at 8 furlongs with maiden 56K’s on the dirt.

ROUNDTABLE RICHES (VERRAZANO x MINESHAFT x MONTJEU) – She’s out of sjmeola’s stakes placed PLANET OF THE APES and is coming back after running 9th against maiden 56K’s at 7 furlongs. She gets the extension this week to 8 furlongs on the dirt and we will hope for better.

ROGUE ZIP (CITY ZIP x AFFIRMED x ICECAPADE) – Based on his last effort I’m of the belief that he’ll benefit from some added distance. So I really piled it on giving him 8 furlongs against allowance NW2L’s.

ROBIX (HARD SPUN x ELUSIVE QUALITY x FOREST WILDCAT) – Broke the maiden at first asking wiring the field going 6 on the dirt. She gets NW2L Allowance horses going 7 furlongs in her next.

CURSED WORLD (IRONICUS x KITTEN’S JOY x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY) – Picked her up in the auction for a pretty penny. She’s started her career with me in a 4th place finish and runs her second race against Allowance NW2x’s at 8 furlongs on the turf.

SOUL SERGEANT (OFFICER x VINDICATION x FORESTRY) – I swung for the fences right out of the gate with her facing Allowance NW4Y’s and she got beaten soundly. We are coming back this week in a  Starter Allowance 50K in hopes of some improvement.

  1. Green Minester ran better than you think. With that nice breeding, DO NOT drop that horse into a claimer.

    • I definitely won’t be dropping him into claimers. By class cut I only mean not running him against maiden 56K’s and maybe dropping him to maiden 30′s or 20′s. Definitely won’t be sending him to claimers anytime soon if at all.

      • I find that the prize money in a maiden race often has little effect on the quality of the field

Rather than look for a lower purse, I’d suggest looking at the field sizes and the quality of the opposition. For example, a high purse race with a small number of entrants with substantial starts may be a softer option than a cheaper race populated with first starters

        Good Luck
