Two Storms Turf Juvenile
It has been several weeks since I handicapped a race. My last review being in Pennsylvania of which I immediately had to hop a flight back to Kentucky for a personal matter due to a death in the family. Things are not all quite back to normal yet, but I felt I could find a moment to handicap a little turf race I saw that will be running for 2 year old open field on the turf in Hong Kong. So back I go on the road again to the orient to take a look of these 2 year olds that are going to attempt to put a feather in their caps. They will be going 5 furlongs in the Two Storms Turf Juvenile which is restricted to 2 year olds in an open field. The track is going to be listed at FIRM TURF on Saturday as they look to find a blanket of cherry blossoms in the winner’s circle. We have ten horses which will be headed to the starting gate for this race. Let us take a look as to how they pan out now that the morning line has been posted.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Cool Catini 9/1 darkhuntera P Kelly
He has mainly been running on the dirt in his career but does have a turf start back in March 2018 of which she stepped up to take 3rd some 4 ¼ lengths back with long odds. He has shown steady improvement on the dirt over the past several months or so. His owner takes him back to the turf to see if he can compete. His last outing was a stakes attempt on the dirt at 5 furlongs of which he finished 4th with a speed of 75. Perhaps a trip back to the turf will improve that because she will need it against this crowd.
2. Teocation 6/1 wolfodge D Ficci
He is sired by Johannesburg and seems to have the blood line, but does he have the experience he will need to find the wire first? He just broke her maiden back on 07/07/2017 in Japan where he best the field by 1 ½ lengths at the wire. He has been running nicely but he is taking a big jump in class against this field today. The morning line odds are giving him a chance in this race. Let’s see if he can capitalize.
3. Rock The Chook 40/1 myra C Reid
Our only prior stakes winner in the crowd for this race and the morning line gave her a big snub with those 40/1 odds. Her prior stakes win came back in March 2018 in an open field where she bests the field by 2 lengths. But it has been a struggle for her to repeat that performance. Her last outing came against an open field again on 08/03/2018 at 7 furlongs in the Oz Racing 2yo Classic. She could only find her way to the middle of the pack placing 7th some 8 lengths off the leader. She has been raced hard as a two year old and is coming off another short rest and is again up against the boys. I can see why the morning line has concerns in supporting her in this effort today.
4. Victory Rock 6/1 slammin E Lang
He placed second in his last two stakes outing on the turf. In his most recent outing in the Devils Sky Turf Juvenile in Spain at 6.5 furlongs she hit the wire 2nd by 1 ½ lengths off the lead against a very tough field. This horse has never finished worse than second in his career. He is sired by Ready For Victory, and this colt by him seems to want to make good of the name. He started his career and broke his maiden on the dirt, but since switching to turf he has found it suitable to him. He might be a contender to watch at the wire.
5. Ways 8/1 nepenthe13 Q Cassell
His last outing came on the dirt in Turkey back on 07/14/2018 of which he crossed the wire first by a ½ length going 4.5 furlongs. He has never been out of the money. That said he has also been running in lower level Allowance races and has no Stakes history. His speeds have not been overly impressive and he will for sure need to find more gas in the tank against this crowd today.
6. Miss Nice Barb 12/1 zbarb6 T Brewer
This gelding sired by Global View comes off a nice stakes run in the Green Van Turf Juvenile at 5 furlongs of which he placed 2nd just ¾ lengths off the lead on June 30, 2018. Another horse that has never been off the boards at the wire. The morning line did not favor him, but perhaps a horse to watch in this race.
7. Icecream Warrior 5/1 redriddler y Jones
Sired by Majestic Warrior he comes to the dance with a perfect record of three straight wins and is on a Hot Streak. His last outing was on the dirt in Pennsylvania on 08/01/2018 at 4.5 furlongs. He is taking a long trip to the Orient and switching surfaces back to turf, is coming off a short rest and has no prior stakes experience, all of which concern me. Thus we will have to see if this undefeated horse can handle the obstacles before him to compete. The morning line kind of likes him and I hope he has the goods.
8. Glen Daddy 8/1 harrylanexp1 M Goldbury
He steps out from a recent maiden win. He broke his maiden on 07/09/2018 in the UAE and is bypassing an Allowance start to take a big jump in class to shoot for a Stakes run. I worry when I see this, but I have seen many horses do it successfully. His maiden runs have been for big purses. Perhaps he can step up and pull it off.
9. Gebrechlichkeit 3/1 dkyoung15 R Rice
The morning line is giving him the nod today going off as the favorite at 3/1. I have my reservations as this horse has only run and won one race and that was a smaller maiden purse at 4.5 furlongs here in Hong Kong. This horse too bypassing an Allowance outing concerns me and I question such a jump in class even with his nice speed of 76 in his first outing. Not to deny he looks like a nice horse, but I think the morning line may have been overly generous.
10. Shampower 5/1 tulloch3 C Meads
In his last outing he put a Stakes Place in his cap. A nice 2 year old sired by Power will represent All-Stars Racing today to attempt to pick up a Stakes win. He had a nice bump in speed in his last outing running an 84 but was caught at the wire in the Organic Chemistry Turf Juvenile at 6.5 furlongs in the UAE on 07/22/2018. He has never found himself off the boards in his four career starts. I think this be a looker.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
1. Shampower: Looking ready for this crowd.
2. Victory Rock: Two nice Stakes placing in last two outings.
3. Cool Catini: Comes back to the turf and I think he will like it.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Miss Nice Babs: Looking at this record and a good showing in his last outing in a Stakes run you have to pick him as your long shot at 12/1. He just might find himself in the top three today.
