The agenda of this week was on jockeys which is a portion of the game I had been severely lacking in. After some advice from the vets of the game I ended up making significant adjustments to jockeys and not sure if it’s just a coincidence but it seems to have already improved the performance of some horses. Either way we will let it ride and see if the numbers continue to improve. I certainly didn’t send out the cream of the crop this weekend and it was kind of a weird week overall as all of the watch list ran on Wednesday. Next week’s watch list should make for some interesting storylines as MACGREGOR comes back to run against winners for the 2nd time after a disappointing attempt (or lack thereof) in his first. He’ll also be joined by some other horses that tug on my heart strings such as ZAPP DADDY, UNION GONE WILD, and SPEARMINT POLO.

This week’s Record:  30-5-2-4

Last Weeks’ Watch List:

DANEHILL INDY (TAKE CHARGE INDY x MIZZEN MAST x DANEHILL DANCER) – Claimed for 30K from Valesa I brought this 2 year old back to the dirt going 6 furlongs and he didn’t run too bad, but ultimately couldn’t find the money. He’d finish 4th going 6 furlongs and post a 74 speed fig.

UNCLE PEACHES (UNCLE MO x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x DEPUTY MINISTER) – I didn’t change his conditions because I thought to myself “maybe he just needed a race” I was wrong as he seems to be very distanced challenged. Will try to cut him back to 5 furlongs and see how he does.

FATE IS CUNNING (CARPE DIEM x DIXIE UNION x PRIVATE ACCOUNT) – Ran decently in the debut before getting passed in the stretch going 7 furlongs on the dirt finishing 2nd. So we cut the distance today and she’d go on to wire the field with a 74 speed fig.

SNYPER (GENERAL A ROD x NUREYEV x PIONEEROF THE NILE) – He always manages to close but never seems to do enough. Most recently he finished 4th by 1.5 lengths going 7 furlongs on the dirt. I’m going to give him the stretch to 8 furlongs on the dirt before we try a different surface.

HINCHINTAP (HINCHINBROOK (AUS) x TAPIT x MEDAGLIA D’ORO) – After some good improvement in her last I gave her a stretch to 8 furlongs and while she passed some tired horses in the stretch she didn’t do much in terms of picking up ground on the winner. She’d finish 4th in a pretty even effort at a mile on the turf.

FRANCUA FOREVER (CURLIN x STREET CRY x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY) – Gave this guy a switch to the turf and he looked a bit better improving the speed fig to a 73. He’d finish 3rd when everything was said and done but it looks as though he may improve with some more distance.

Studs:

FRANCUA’S ARCH (ARCH x CAPOTE x EL PRADO) – I’ve run her 5 times since being she was gifted to me in May, all on the turf, and she’s been a great earner. Most recently she ran in a 50K claimer on the turf going a mile and she beat the field pretty easily by 2 lengths and scored a 95 speed fig. A bump to allowance company may be in the mix for her.

AUNTIE’S CAUSE (BRODY’S CAUSE x UNCLE MO x T. M. OPERA O (JPN)) – I originally picked her out of a 5K claiming poly route where she finished last by 8 lengths. I immediately moved her back to turf and has gotten better and better the longer she runs. This week was her 3rd run with me and her highest in terms of class running against 50K claimers going 8.25 furlongs. She’d sit 11 off the pace at 2nd call before making her move and running past her rivals to score the victory by 3 lengths. She scored an 88 speed fig but given that this is only her 2nd victory I think we are going to hang around in the claiming ranks for a bit longer.

PLAYA HONDA (BAYERN x STREET BOSS x VINDICATION) – Another claimer that I paid 30K and 60 BPs for who has started to show signs of life. After failing at sprinting and going a mile, it looked to me that she just wanted more distance. I ended up piling it on giving her an extra 2 furlongs to get her going a mile and a quarter against 125K NW2L claimers. She closed very well but was no match for the winner as she finished 2nd by about 4 lengths. I’m hopeful the more long races I give her the better she’ll get.

MACHO CHARGE (WILL TAKE CHARGE x MUCHO MACHO MAN x FUSAICHI PEGASUS) – This one was a long time coming. One of the first I bred she finally gets over the hump in a 15K MC after 10 tries. Her along with AUNTIE’S CAUSE look to be the beneficiaries of the new jockey changes I’ve made. She wasn’t exactly impressive in her win posting only a 67 speed fig so I’ll continue to run her against low level claimers and hope for BPs.

FRANCUA FOREVER (CURLIN x STREET CRY x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY) – Tried something new with him this week by switching him to turf and he ran good posting his top speed fig of 73 while finishing 3rd. I think I’m going to leave him on the turf for one more start while stretching him out.

BLACK GALILEO (BLACK FRIARS (AUS) x GALILEO (IRE) x CAERLEON) – First run with me out of the auction and she did fairly well trying a distance she’d never gone. We gave her a go at 9 furlongs on the turf and she’d finish 3rd by 10 lengths which was good enough for 10 BPs. I think she definitely wants to route but just not as far as I sent her. I’ll cut her back to 8 and hope for improvement.

Duds:

KNUCKLE UP (TONALIST x WILD AGAIN x SIR IVOR) – Kind of puzzled through three races on this guy. After showing some decent improvement in his last I assumed the cut in distance at this week’s distance would help him get over the hump. Well things didn’t exactly work how I planned and he regressed finishing 6th in a 5.5 furlong turf sprint. Back to the drawing board and possibly switching to dirt.

EMOJI BOMB (MEDICEAN x NUREYEV x NODOUBLE) – He’s been running against small fields which doesn’t really lend well to his closing running style but he still ends up as a dud for not constantly failing in these events. After 5 tries and this week’s most recent 3rd place (out of 4) finish I’m making the switch to dirt in hopes for better results.

NOBLE TYCOON (ENGLISH CHANNEL x KING KAMEHAMEHA x WRITTEN TYCOON) – With his most recent 10.5 length loss I’m of the frame of mind that he just wants to go much, much farther then what’s available to him currently. He runs similar to another horse of mine, THE MARVELOUS ONE who got things figured out with going much further distances. For the time being I’m going to put him on the shelf and give him a go at 3 years old.

MAFIA CODE (VERAZZANO x MACHIAVELLIAN x EMPIRE MAKER) –His most recent affair was against maiden 40k claimers that saw him not jump out to the lead and ultimately get disinterested and finish 7th by 5 lengths.  As I stare at his running lines it has dawned on me that I should probably tinker with jockey instructions and send him from the get go while going shorter.

AFTERNOON APPROACH (DAWN APPROACH (IRE) x MEDIEAN (GB) x REDOUTE’S CHOICE) – Kody (Thank you again!) was kind enough to gift this horse to me so I could get in the ESR Aladar Turf King competition. Unfortunately for me he got beat pretty easily as he finished 5th by 6 lengths posting up a 70 speed fig.  His momma did her best running on the dirt so that’s where he will move in his next against what will likely be a much easier group then what he saw this week.

GRIZZLED WAR VET (TO HONOR AND SERVE x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x SCAT DADDY) – She continues to not do much running and her most recent showing was a 17.5 length loss going a mile. Probably going to drop her into claimers.

SOUPTAILS (MOSLER x ALPHABET SOUP x TALE OF THE CAT) – He ran a 73 in his debut and abruptly bounced to a 61 in his second race back. He’s the first one who I tinkered with jockey instructions on and we tried sending him from the get go. The tactics got him out with the leader but it was to no avail as he couldn’t sustain his speed throughout. He’d end up finishing 6th by 5.5 lengths and post up a 63 speed fig. I’m thinking we are going to try longer and see if that helps him out a bit.

WAKE AND TAKE (WILL TAKE CHARGE x DEPUTY MINISTER x FORTUNATE PROSPECT) – I got a little bored and found a mare by the name of PROSPECTOR SHOWER that bred a couple of stakes placed horses and figured what the hell. H ran a 72 speed fig going 7.5 furlongs in the debut but finished 5th by 5 lengths. Not so sure he wanted to go that far so I’ll cut him back a bit and hope for some improvement.

Next Week’s Watch List:

UNION GONE WILD (UNION RAGS x WILD AGAIN x A.P. INDY) – After a disappointing run in the G3 Manor of Bashford he comes back to try a mile against allowance runners.

MACGREGOR (MACLEAN’S MUSIC x HARLAN’S HOLIDAY x GALILEO) – Ahhhhh my first ever bounce victim. After the disappointing performance against winners the first time he comes back to run against allowance NW2L’s.

SILENT MOTIVE (CREATIVE CAUSE x SUNDAY SILENCE x ECLIPTICAL) – He disappointed in his comeback against maiden’s on the turf in which he finished 6th by 3 lengths and regressed to from a 70 speed fig to a 69. He’s getting a surface switch to dirt in hopes that he figures things out.

SPEARMINT POLO (PIONEEROF THE NILE x RAINBOW QUEST x HIGH TOP) – Ran great in the stretch of a mile and a quarter finishing 3rd in her last in which she picked up 7 lengths and 9 places from 2nd to final call. Naturally we are going to give her much more distance to run at so next week she’ll be running a mile and ¾’s against maiden 50K’s.

ZAPP DADDY (GHOSTZAPPER x SCAT DADDY x TAPIT) – Something tells me this guy wants a mile but we are running 7 furlongs on the dirt today. He showed some improvement stalking the pace in his last but ran out of real estate, so he gets the extension to 7 and the confidence of his trainer to pull off the victory.
