A Field of Ten Two Year Old New York Bred Fillies enter the Big Apple starting gate in the $100,000 ESR Skyscraper Stakes.  The race will be run at Eight Furlongs over the Turf Course.

New York City has the highest number of skyscrapers in the US with 257 buildings towering above 490 feet and is second in the world only to only Hong Kong who has more with 317.

NYC also boasts the most impressive skyline in U.S.  This list ranks completed and topped out New York City skyscrapers that stand at least 600 feet tall:

One World Trade Center or Freedom Tower stands 1,776 feet and is the sixth tallest building in the world.

432 Park Avenue is a residential skyscraper in New York City that overlooks Central Park and stands 1,396 feet and is the twenty second tallest building in the world and third largest in the U.S.

30 Hudson Yards or North Tower tops out at 1,268 feet

The Empire State Building and was the first building in the world to contain over 100 floors and stands at 1,250 feet.

The Bank of America Tower stands at 1,200 feet and is the first skyscraper to receive a Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

LETGOWITHAWARNING – the only question here is whether the 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Big Brown out of the graded stakes producing mare UNPUNISHED (Sadler’s Wells) will take to the grass course in her first attempt over the Turf; a sibling to three stakes winners, all with wins over the Turf Course, the NY product’s chances of handling the Turf are further enhanced based on the performance of her half-brother ESCAPED PUNISHMENT, winner of over $650k on the Turf Course, including a victory in the G2 Carlsbad Lessons over the Turf; the kingab stables have dominated ESR competition in 2018, and if you feel compelled to bet against this filly and her connections, well you have been ‘warned’…one to beat

ALY’S BIG TOWN – the trotter1 trained 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Big Brown out of the Stakes winning mare ALYTOWN (Speightstown) has prepped for this race in her prior two starts over the Turf Course, neither of which give any real hope to a top three finish in the ESR feature; the local-bred filly gets no turf influence on the Dam’s side, who never raced on the turf, and her four siblings have a combined one for ten record on the grass course; the only saving grace may come in the form of trying two turns for the first time, where her Dam was 9-30 lifetime…chance on best

BARSWEEPER – trying the Turf for the first time is the irisharse trained 2 Year Old Light Grey Filly by Trinniberg out of multi-stakes winning mare UNBRIDLED MISS (Unbridled’s Song), winner of the 8.5-furlong IS THIS NAME TAKEN Stakes; the NY-bred will have to go back to her Grand Dam, MISS SHELLEY, a stakes winner over the grass course, to draw on her Turf influence, but multiple obstacles in distance and surface present a challenge for her here on Saturday…tough task

NYW MISSILE CADET – looking to cut into that trainer’s lead, the cadet racing stables enter their 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Golden Missile out of the stakes winning mare CADETS CAUSEWAY (Giant’s Causeway), winner of over $150k over the Turf Course including a victory in the 8.5-furlong Storm Dog Turf Filly Memorial over the grass course; a One Mile Turf gate to wire victory against open bred rivals in her last start should have this filly poised for a top effort; the NY lady should be quickest from the gate and could be hard to catch if left unattended…one to catch

MODERN GOLD – there is a lot to like about the sremel trained 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Al Khali out a Seeking the Gold mare based on her first career start where she finished a hard fought third in the ESR Incurable Optimist Special after battling the lead at every pole; trying the Turf for the first time while stretching out to a mile, you could expect the local filly to challenge for the lead once again, and if she is comfortable over this grass course would  put pressure on NYW MISSILE CADET in what could prove to be a hotly contested pace…must not falter

CURLIN’S CAT – the valesa trained 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Courageous Cat out of graded placed mare FOUR C’S (Curlin), the second placed finisher in the G3 Arizona Shoot-Out Special, enters the field off her maiden victory at the claiming level and although the NY-bred has never been off the board in three turf appearances, she is taking a huge jump in class in her first start going around two turns…tough task

LADY FABULOUS – the casino stables have been heating up as they look to continue the hot streak with their 2 Year Old Brown Filly by Here Comes Ben out of the stakes producing mare AB FAB II (Medaglia D’oro); the 9th place finisher in the ESR Incurable Optimist Special turned in a useful performance in her next start when she finished 4th in her first Turf appearance while going to turns for the first time; eligible to improve off that start, the NY product can draw on the success of her half-brother AB FAB III, winner of more that $350k over the grass course…might surprise

PRADA DANCER – making her racing debut for the lbailey racing stables is the 2 Year Old Bay Filly by War Dancer out of the stakes winning mare ROMANTIC MOVEMENT (Manduro), winner of $200k while routing over the Turf Course; one of eight siblings, all winners over the Turf Course, none exceeding the Allowance level, it is a good bet this filly will achieve some level of success at the local level while racing over the grass course, but she is faced with a difficult task here on Saturday in her racing debut…bred for turf

JAYMZ BOUGHT ME – making her first career start is the ace trained 2 Year Old Bay Filly by First Cornerstone out of the stakes producing mare BRAD BOUGHT ME (War Chant); positives can be drawn from the fact that First Cornerstone was a Grade 2 winner in Europe as a 2yo, and the local-breds lone stakes winning sibling was third in his debut in the Sabre Ally Special over the Turf Course while compiling over $180k in career earnings while routing over the grass course; should be comfortable on the lawn…your call

TOOBENAMEDLATER – another filly making her racing debut is the francua trained 2 Year Old Bay Filly by Midas Touch out of the multiple stakes winning mare FEATURED EVENT (Event of the Year), winner of more than $200k while routing over the grass course; the NY filly is one of eight siblings, primarily at the claiming level, only two of which have recorded victories over the Turf Course; connections are hopeful this one doesn’t fall far from the tree and surpasses the past performances of her siblings…in tough

Handicapping the Field

Looking over the past performances of the entries in this ESR feature I had to remind myself that this is a 2yo Stakes race.  The field splits in half with five runners still maidens, three making their first career start, and five runners that have recorded a victory.  Based on her debut in the ESR Incurable Optimist Special, MODERN GOLD tops all maidens with a chance to break into the top three spots.

CURLIN’S CAT recorded a maiden claiming victory in her last start and is the least likely of the winner’s group to challenge for a top three prize.  The class jump should prove unfavorable. This leaves LETGOWITHAWARNING, ALY’S BIG TOWN, BARSWEEPER, and NYW MISSILE CADET to compete for top honors in one of the weaker ESR Stake features.

NYW MISSILE CADET should gain the early advantage, and if left unattended to the lead will be hard to gun down as they turn for home.  I expect she will get some early pressure, but she is too far in her conditioning to give way to the potential chaser.

LETGOWITHAWARNING is clearly the horse to beat and only horse in the field with more than one victory.  She has never raced on the Turf and that is the one big advantage NYW MISSILE CADET has on her.  She will be tough to beat if she takes to the grass course.

ALY’S BIG TOWN was competitive on the Turf but hasn’t broken a 70-speed figure in four career starts.  She would really have to like stretching out to upset the top two.

BARSWEEPER looks like she’s destined to be a dirt sprinter but does have a strong turf influence two generations back in her family tree.

The Picks

NYW MISSILE CADET – gate to wire

BARSWEEPER – worth a wager
