Pshyco Dad Turf Sprint
7.5 Furlongs, Good Turf, Restricted to 3 Year Olds, $100,000 Purse
Post Time: Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 1:30 PM
This week I will be heading to the cornfields of Iowa. Another one of my favorite tracks is Prairie Meadows located in Altoona, IA just outside of Des Moines. After living there for 13 years I try to get back there when I can to see old friends and that beautiful gold dome on the Capital Building. But my main purpose today is to preview what should be a great turf race. Psycho Dad Turf Sprint will be at a distance of 7.5 furlongs and the surface will be listed as Good Turf. There are seven colts and geldings that will be running. The field includes three prior Graded Place colts. This small field looks to be pretty tough. The morning line odds and post positions are listed. Let us take a preview of this nice looking field as they prepare for this Stakes race and try to collect that $100,000 purse.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Brilliant Quality 8/5 ashleyfarm B Rocker
Sired by Quality Road he pulled in 3rd in his last outing in the G3, Middle Of Nowhere Sprint which was on the dirt at 6 furlongs earning him his Graded Place Badge. He ran a nice 110 speed in that race and led the field around the track until after the third call. He could not hold his lead and was caught in the stretch. He does have prior stakes experience on the turf and has won at the listed stakes level on the turf in two prior starts. He is looking good, should be running up front and should compete for a win.
2. Elsevier 5/1 oldmoonfarms88 S Wild
He is the only gelding in the field and comes in well bred and sired by Animal Kingdom. Has struggled to find his first trip to the winners circle at the stakes level, but he has placed in a couple of prior listed stakes outings. He ran his top speed rating his last time out of 106, but he failed to hit the boards that race, Inside Strength Turf Sprint. He came in 7th, 7 ¼ off at the wire in that 7.5 furlong attempt. He is looking to get his picture taken for the first time at the winners circle at the stakes level.
3. Distorted Distance 5/1 jcsuperstar D Zordich
In his most recent outings he has been traveling two turns at distances of 8 furlongs or more. He steps back down in distance here today to see if he can find his stride again as running 9 and 10 furlongs have not been so kind. His top speed rating of 106 came back in April of this year in the Exeter Weapon Turf Mile where he placed 2nd in that race 1 ½ lengths back at the wire.
4. Roar Paco 36/1 lafitte02 R Keouch
This lightly raced horse only having four career starts just broke his maiden on 08/02/2018 going 7.5 furlongs in Nebraska. He has shown improvement with each race, but he will be taking a big jump in class against far greater seasoned contenders. The odds makers were not kind today due to lack of experience and speed ratings. He will have to dig in deep and find extra against this field.
5. Wedding Objection 7/1 lostcode C Capper
He only has one prior stakes attempt but that was back in April of this year. That outing he did not fare well at the wire coming in 6th place some 5 ½ lengths back at the wire. He did break the triple digit mark with a speed of 101 in his last outing which was a NW4L Allowance race going 7 furlongs in Kentucky. He placed 2nd in that race just 1 ¼ lengths back at the finish. He has varied in running style in many of his races. Hard to know where his jockey will set him as they head around the track.
6. Encosta De Raven 5/1 dkstables20 L Kraft
Another Graded Placing horse in the field and was sired by Raven’s Pass. He earned that GP badge back in May in the G3, Roy Rogers Handicap attaining his top speed of 104 going 8 furlongs. He takes a small step back in distance from his last four starts. Since his owner/trainer switching his horse over to turf back in February he seems to have taken well to the change.
7. Speak The Words 3/1 sealska N Armstrong
This colt sired by Stormy Atlantic earned his GP Badge back on 01/27/2018 going 8 furlongs in the G2, Fainting Goat Nightmares Stakes of which he placed 2nd and was 2 lengths back at the wire. In his most recent race he ran a nice 109 speed but could not find the wire first and found himself 2nd by just ¾ lengths back. In his 12 lifetime starts he has only been off the boards twice. Look for him to contend and mostly close from back off the pace.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
1. Brilliant Quality: Hard to go against the top money winner. Will he like his trip back to the turf?
2. Speak The Words: Looks good to go this distance and has only been off the boards twice in his career.
3. Elsevier: May get up for a big surprise.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Wedding Objection: Has to find a little extra today, but I am going with him on exotic tickets today. He could find his way to get on the boards.
