.
From Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne,  Australia,  we bring you the Group 1 Coffeefields Cup.  A field of nine – eight older males and a lone three year old – will battle it out for the winner’s share of the lucrative $3 million dollar purse up for grabs.  They’re led by two time G1 champion PASS THE DRO,  and top entry point earner and G1 victor DYED CANDY;  both are the only million plus earners in this group.  The handicapper doesn’t see it that way,  favoring a pair of G3 winners;  there are four other stakes winners lining up in the starting gate.  A three million dollar purse was not enough enticement to get any of the top fifteen in the division to enter.
.
Some wikitrivia:  Caulfield Racecourse is one of Melbourne, Australia’s best-known horse-racing tracks. Commonly known as “The Heath” by local racegoers, it is located eight kilometres from the Melbourne central business district, on the boundary of Caulfield and Caulfield East in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs. It is home to the Melbourne Racing Club.
.
The track has a triangular shaped layout, comprising three straights,  with a total circumference of 2.08-kilometre (1.29 mi) and a finishing straight of 367-metre (1,204 ft). All turns have a 4% to 6% banking. Racing takes place in an anti-clockwise direction. The totally glassed in Rupert Clarke stand provides an uninterrupted view of the racecourse.
.
Caulfield has about 20 race days each season and hosts some of the Australia’s most famous and historic races including the Caulfield Cup, Caulfield Guineas, Blue Diamond Stakes, C F Orr Stakes, Oakleigh Plate, Underwood Stakes and Futurity Stakes.
.
As for our race,  let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see what the figures may reveal.

BANDITFRANK                                           ENG     4M     banditfarm         T Loesch         3/1
.
Leading them out of the paddock is this bay four year old colt,  who exits a win in the Pyromaniacal listed stakes at 10.5 furlongs,  flinging a 111 SP# from just off the pace.  Scratch bred Frankel fellow (by Nureyev) was a dull 7th one before that in the  G3 Big Kahuna Cup at 9 panels,  floating a 111 SP# while never a threat.  One back of that he just failed to hold on when 2nd in the G1 The Milan Grand Prix at this distance,  flashing a 115 SP# in a stalking effort.  Runner from the banditfarm racing group has won 7 of 9 life time;  versatile racer would benefit from a shrewd jockey ride.  One of the co-favorites at 3/1 on the morning line.

 REGALIAN                                                      ENG     5M     bikeboy         J Stivers         17/1
.
Returns to the weeds off a 2nd in an open allowance at 14 furlongs,  earning a 99 SP# prompting the pace.  Dansili dude,  out of the Hall Of Fame sim mare Magniforma (by Galileo),  was a closing 4th in prior try in the G3 The Freer Stakes at 13 panels on grass,  etching a 104 SP# from well back of them early.  Bay five year old was a tiring 6th one before that in the Heidelberg Heights listed stakes at a mile and three quarters,  eking out a 102 SP#.  Versatile  runner from the bikeboy barn steps way up here,  seems like he’ll have his hands full regardless of jockey tactics.  Handicapper doesn’t seem to like him much either at 17/1 on the early line.

KING OF THE CORKS                           JPN     4M     whipit             K Ledwith         9/1
.
Speedster from the whipit racing operation exits a front running 4th in the G1 The Expensive Jalopy at this route,  nabbing a 105 SP#.  King Kamehmeha kicker,  out of the sim mare The Little Corka (by Cape Cross), was also 4th one back of that in the G2 The Kergolay at 14 panels,  notching a 107 SP# making all the early pace.  Bay four year old colt wired an open allowance at 10.5 furlongs in his previous outing,  nailing a 113 SP# while just holding off the late finisher.  Looks to be one of the main speeds in this affair,  though SHAM CANTERKING looks quicker.  Unlikely to get an uncontested lead and say buhbye around the far turn.

SHAM CANTERKING                            IRE     5M     kentred         S Ledwith         9/1
.
Late developing speedball has taken six straight turf routes after a two year hiatus.  Bay five year old horse was victorious in the Mannart Tornado listed stakes in his most recent try,  whacking a 114 SP# in a ridiculously easy romp.   Shamardal sharpie,  out of the G2 winning,  million dollar earning sim mare Canterbury Queen (by Deep Impact),  finished off his conditions with a dominant score in a  NW5L allowance at this trip,  wrangling a 111 SP# in his first stakes start.  One back of that was a wire to wire win at this distance in a NW4L allowance,  working out a 104 SP# while never threatened.  Fireball from the kentred racing group will be winging it from the gate  -  could prove difficult to catch off current form.

DYED CANDY                                               KY     4M     jakplummer         E Eberhard         5/1
.
Candy Ride caballo,  out of the G2 winning sim mare Dykestra (by Dynaformer),  was a gaining 2nd last time over in the G1 The Expensive Jalopy at this trip over this strip,  banking a 109 SP# from the back of the pack.  Boisterous bay four year old colt came on for 3rd one back of that in the G1 Sword Swallower Stakes at this route,  bashing a 114 SP# from mid pack.  In his prior run he ran them down in the straight to get the money in the G! -United Countries Handicap at 11 panels,  blasting a 115 SP# from well off the pace.  Runner from the jakplummer stable is in fine current form,  may get that rapid pace up front to set up his late kick;  much to like,  5/1 odds are not too hard to take.

THA TENENT                                                TX     5M     amir1753         M Zerr             5/1
.
Light grey five year old horse was 2nd best at two miles in latest in the Cuvee Redhead listed stakes,  zipping a 108 SP# from the second flight.  Sing Baby Sing stepper,  out of the stakes winning sim mare Lucky’s Marie (by Dylan Thomas),  got up for the win one before that in the Final Fan listed at 14 furlongs over this oval,  zapping a 111 SP# from the middle of the pack.  One back of that he took a conditioned allowance at 11.5 panels,  zinging a 108 SP# from well off the early leaders.  Amir1753 protege should be rolling late in the lane,  could be right there on top try;  handicapper likes his chances as the 5/1 co-third choice.

ROXY TO THE STARS                           IRE     4M     roxyken         F Gossett         3/1
.
Bucking bay four year old colt won his first try at this distance last out in the G3 Stockholm International,  sticking a 110 SP# with a nice late run from the back of the pack.  Son of Sea The Stars,  based on the G1 winning,  million dollar earning sim he-mare Roxy Epoxy (by Tanino Gimlet),  was 2nd best in his previous start in the Nirvana Filter listed stakes at 11 panels,  smacking a 113 SP# in a mid pack trip.  One before that he got up for 3rd in the G2 Kakarazuka Tinen Cup at 10 furlongs,  stabbing a 112 SP# from well back in the pack.  Runner from the roxyken racing operation will be hoping for swift early fractions to close into;  handicapper likes his chances as the 3/1 co-favorite.

 PASS THE DRO                                           JPN     5G     silversun26         B Oston         6/1
.
Two time G1 champion has failed to hit the board in his last four outings,  all G1 / 12 furlong contests,  with last out’s 4th in The Europe Classic his best showing,  landing a 101 SP# while never close.  Bay five year old gelding was dead last of fourteen one back of that in the Sword Swallower Stakes,  lucking into a 95 SP# without threatening.  In his previous try he showed a little late run when 6th in The Grand Brazilian,  lashing a 109 SP# but making little impact.  Novellist nipper out of the sim mare Lady Met (by Kitten’s Joy) seems to have regressed since winning first off “the cut”,  might have one more big effort left for owner/trainer silsversun26.

TAPDATAS                                                       KY     3M     wilk             M Zeus             20/1
.
Last out of the saddling area is our lone three year old,  who showed some late foot last out to get 6th in a NW5L allowance at a mile,  cashing a 105 SP# from way back.  Tapit toughie,  out of the stakes winning  sim mare Fluid Dynamics (by Bernardini),  lost contact with the fireld when 13th in the Poker In The Back listed stakes at 9.5 furlongs,  catching a 96 SP# while never close.  Light grey colt won the Half A World Away listed at 9.5 panels in his prior engagement,  copping a 102 SP# in a last to first performance.  Wilk trainee will be far back early;  goes beyond 9.5 furlongs for the first time in his first grass outing;  much to overcome to be involved in this decision.
