A little catching up to do as I’ve missed about two months worth of updates much due to life getting in the way. I figured I’d use this update to give a little year in review of where the barn currently stands. As of today 1-8-19 the Francua stables have raced 1,393 times with a record of 172-187-161 which was good enough for a 12.3 winning percentage and an ITM percentage of 37.3. Of all my barns the Lion’s Den has been the best, amassing 13 victories in 47 races good enough for a win of 27.7% and ITM of 51.1%. This barn in particular is populated with a ton of speed balls that like to go 4.5 – 5.5 furlongs. The best of the group looks to be a son of I AM INVINCIBLE (AUS) who goes by the name of RHYTHM SHOOTER. RHYTHM SHOOTER won three races as a 2 year old including the Alba Sea King Turf Juvenile and is looking to continue his winning ways when he returns to the track in February for the Tamariki turf Dash.
Outside of the Lion’s Den there was lots of success in my first year with the sim that included 4 stakes winners and one G2 winner, check out my over achievers below:
NEW MEXICAN MORN (SLEEPLESS MORN x ARCH x AWESOME AGAIN) – Claimed for 3K back in March, he’s been a fantastic earner for me. His record under the Patriot Place barn is 8-3-1-2 which includes a local stakes championship in New Mexico. Having been on the track 22 times he’s not exactly lightly raced, however he really seems to have found his stride against local breds and will continue running under those conditions.
STRIKE PAY DIRT (BERNARDINI x SMART STRIKE x WILD AGAIN) – Won the High Bidder Dirt Juvenile as he’d wire the field with ease. I got a little greedy with him early on and sent him out 1-1-19 in the Virtuous Band Dirt sprint at 6.5 furlongs to see how he’d handle the extra distance and he’d finish 6th by 4 lengths. Despite that little trainer snafu he’s put up a record of 5-3-1-0 which is good enough for 117K in earnings. Nothing on the schedule for him as of yet but he’ll probably come back at the beginning of March.
RHYTHYM SHOOTER (I AM INVINCIBLE (AUS) x DUBAI MILLENIUM x SWORD DANCE) – As mentioned above he’s been a great little sprinter. I did try to stretch him out a bit at the end of his 2-year old season but it didn’t work out as he’d finish 13th by 5.5 lengths. So needless to say its back to 5 furlongs for him. 3-4 record with 97K in earnings thus far.
ESPIRI (IRONICUS x CHARM SPIRIT (IRE) x EXCELLENT ART) – A fantastic stakes winner who posted a 98 speed fig in his performance in the Hey Zeus Turf Juvenile. I did run him in the G3 Philanthropist before the year ended and he put in another nice effort but just missed the money finishing 4th by 3 lengths. Right now he’s sporting a record of 5-3-0-0 and is scheduled to run in the Seat Back Forward Stakes this Saturday.
TURN EM’ LOOSE (CARAVAGGIO x WRITTEN TYCOON (AUS) x KINGMAMBO) – He’s my pride and joy right now as he went on to win the G2 Royal Dodge with a 91 speed fig earning himself a spot in the G1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile. The BB didn’t go as well as I’d hoped as he’d run a disappointing 12th by 11 lengths, but hey at least I had one make it to the big dance. Current record is 6-3-0-1 and is scheduled to come back in February I just don’t know where yet.
Claimers to Allowance Success Stories
TEMPERANCE GOLD (BAYERN x MEDAGLIA D’ORO x KRIS S.) – This gal is a fun story to me. I claimed her for 20K from a turf race with the plan to run her on dirt. I didn’t have her for very long before someone else claimed her from me for 50K. Despite making 30K off the claim I was really disappointed I lost her which led me to tag her on my watch list. After 4 months of checking I got an opportunity to claim her back for 25K and she’s never looked back. Since that claim she rattled off 3 victories in a row (all at the claiming level 50K and up) along with a 2nd place finish against 35K Starter Allowance horses. She’s had 6 runs with me and posted a record of 3-1-1. Now 5 years old she’s going to give Allowance NW1x’s a go in her first start of 2019.
QUALITY RAGS (ELUSIVE QUALITY x UNION RAGS x STORM CAT) – Claimed this filly for 25K from kingny and she’s been quite the earner. In 9 races with me she’s posted a record of 4-2-1 with her victories occurring against 100K NW3L Claimers. 150K NW4L Claimers, 29K allowance NW1x, and 9K Allowance NW2x runners. This filly turns 4 years old this season and after running a 109 speed fig in her last race of 2018 she will give stakes runners a go in the Strong Prospect Dirt Mare Dash February 2nd.
PURPLER (MICROMANAGE x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x SEATTLE SLEW) – If I’m not mistaken I believe she was my very first claim and she panned out quite nicely. Bought for 17.5K back in January, I gave her about a month and a half off and ran her back against New York local bred allowance runners. She’d finish 3rd that day and it would rack up the BPs from that point forward. She’d run for me 13 times and bring in a total of 179 BP with a record of 2-4-2. Toward the end of 2018 it was starting to become clear that she might be losing a step and rather then continue to run her in low level claimers I retired and bred her to another local NY bred (TRINNIBERG) which produced a filly by the name of TOWER SHOP.
Finally the What the Hell was I thinking horses:
STREET ASSOCIATE (VERRAZANO x STREET CRY x MACHIAVELLIAN) – Based on the breeding alone I clearly wasn’t thinking, but to be fair this was one of the first horses I bred and at the time I knew next to nothing about breeding or what that little “5x” did on the scratch bred screen. Despite my in-breeding mishap, he won in his debut but hasn’t done much since, posting a 2 year old record of 7-1-0-1. Here’s to hoping inbreeding ages well!
OH JAM IT (GOLDENCENTS x KINGABOUT x J.L. SULLIVAN) – I picked this horse up from the auction for a $1 and I still feel like I was bamboozled in the deal. When I picked her up she touted a record of 24-1-2-0 and as a naïve rookie trainer in the game I thought to myself “I can fix this horse and get some results out of her.” Moral of the story is the proof is in the pudding or in this case her past performances. She’d run 4 times with me never finishing closer than 6 lengths. I retired her with the intention of breeding something cheap to her but almost a year later and I still haven’t gotten around to it.
Most of my more talented horses won’t be coming back till February but here’s a few worth mentioning that I’ll include in my next write up:
ESPIRI – Mentioned above will be running in a stakes race this Friday.
VINTAGE EMPIRE (EMPIRE MAKER x DEHERE x THEATRICAL) – She’s run 4 times for me and speed fig wise has shown improvement on each extension in distance. She hasn’t run since November 22nd so she may need a race to get her fitness levels up. Be that as it may we are trying 9 furlongs on the dirt to see if we can improve upon her 5th place finish.
DEFINITIONOF CRAZY (PIONEEROF THE NILE x DANZIG x FORTY NINER) -Only two runs as a two year old both at 6 furlongs where he never really got into a competitive position. This week he gets a huge stretch to 8.5 furlongs in which we will find out if he’s got his daddy’s lungs.
PSALM OF WAR (WAR CHANT x PLEASANT COLONY x AFFIRMED) - His only finish outside of the money as a 2 year old was in a 7 furlong sprint. Since moving to routes he’s 3-3 ITM which includes back to back victories and a 2nd place. He’ll try stakes company this weekend as he’ll run in the Squal Me Halo Dirt Memorial.
NO SWEARING (MR SPEAKER x ROSES IN MAY x MR. GREELEY) – Out of Sjmeola’s GREELEY GOOD, I think this guy is going to be a very good runner for me. He was 3-3 ITM as a 2 year old with a first and two seconds and will start his 3 year old career running at 7 furlongs on the dirt against 34K NW2L allowance runners.
