The expression Flower Power was coined by the American Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in 1965. Hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public. Flower Power originated in Berkeley, California, as a symbolic action of protest against the Vietnam War. Protesters were provided with “masses of flowers” to hand out to policemen, press, politicians and spectators to turn anti-war rallies into a form of street theater thereby reducing the fear, anger and threat that is inherent within protests.
Twelve Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Up will enter the Big Apple starting gate for the $100,000 ESR Flower Power Stakes. The race will be run at Nine Furlongs over the Dirt Course.
MS. GILL – you can bet the ranch there are 14 other 4yo Fillies happy that the bonk trained 4 Year Old Scratch-Bred Bay Filly by Bernardini, out of a Danzig by Mr. Prospector mare, passed up the G2 Encino Man for 4yo Only, to run in this week’s ESR feature; not so happy to see her entered in New York are the Fillies and Mares featured in this weeks ESR showcase; the winner of last year’s G1 VERMONT IS 4 LOVERS Stakes faltered somewhat in her quest to capture the 2018 G1 Bluegrass Oaks, but a resurgent third place finish in the G2 Hunted By Lions in her last start has the 22nd ranked filly of her division poised for a winning effort here on Saturday…one to beat
DANCE ON THE NILE – the kingab trained 5 Year Old Brown Mare by Pioneerof The Nile out of the G2 winning, multi-graded stakes producing mare ROCK N’ ROLL BEN (Street Cry), Dam of the undefeated G1 winning SONG OF BEN, isn’t likely to be intimidated by the appearance of MS. GILL in this field, in fact, her victories in the ESR MADMAX Stakes and G2 Pitcher Molly last year distinguish her as a major player against this field of talented Fillies and Mares; making her first start after a two month layoff, the winner of more that a half million dollars in career earnings makes her return at 9-furlongs, a distance that might present her with her biggest challenge here on Saturday…dangerous
POPPET CADET- you have to be impressed by the victory in the Wondergirl Angie Dirt Filly LTO for this 4 Year Old Bay Filly by War Front, out of the stakes winning PLATYCERCUS CADET (Smart Strike), the cadet trained marvel she drew away from the field in the 9-furlong test to gain her first stakes victory; she will face a tougher task here on Saturday, but the surging KY-bred appears well-poised to take on that challenge…never better
QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA – at first glance, it might be easy to overlook the theduke88 trained 5 Year Old Bay Mare by Australia, out of the G1 winning, graded stakes producing mare GINGIVITIS (Forty Niner), because of her 3rd place finish in a 7-furlong Allowance LTO, but a closer examination of that race reveals that start followed an almost 4-month layoff, providing a perfect prep race for the winner of the Free Carson Dirt Mare Route…chance off best
MAYA’S JOY – the nextbonus trained 5 Year Old Scratch Bred Bay Mare by Bernardini, out of a Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector mare, may have extended herself beyond her preferred distance LTO when she turned in a dull effort in the 9.5-furlong W. Affair Dirt Mare Route, but the capable performer should be well within her comfort zone here on Saturday as demonstrated by her 9-furlong gate to wire victory in the Jhiqui Dirt Mare Special two races back…must not falter
MUSIC IS MINE – turning in a career best race LTO with a victory in the 9-furlong Bucking Bronco Dirt Mare Route, the deeprock connections may have revitalized this 5 Year Old Bay Mare’s career discovering her best distance and racing surface in her last start; primarily a Turf runner throughout her career, the daughter of Kyllachy has a new focus in racing and could be a factor with a repeat of her last outing…might be this good
YACKPOT CADET – taking full advantage of the Claiming, Starter, and Allowance ranks under the tutelage of the itch racing stables, connections have decided to take a shot once again against Stakes level competition, and why not; a 3rd place finish against DANCE ON THE NILE in the ESR MADMAX Stakes against DANCE ON THE NILE last June are all the credentials needed convince you that she can perform at this leve,l and current form suggests a top effort…don’t ignore
COMPLETE PACKAGE – the casino trained 6 Year Old Scratch Bred Bay Mare by Blame, out of an Indian Charlie x Summer Squall mare, is a savvy veteran who has seen her share of ESR battles making her 4th ESR Residency Race appearance; the KY-bred enters the field off a 5th place finish in the ESR Bitchen Stakes LTO, the first time she has been off the board in an ESR feature; after a dozen consecutive triple digit performances, I’d reluctant to say this hard-hitting filly is on the other end of a successful career, however I’m not sure a stakes victory is within her grasp anymore…happy with part
TAPPED FOR GOLD – the lightly raced trotter1 trained 4 Year Old Scratch Bred Light Grey Filly by Tapit out of a Seeking the Gold x Foolish Pleasure mare not only has the least amount experience of any of the competitors in this field, her chances are also compromised by the least amount of victories; having said that, her last two appearances suggest there is plenty of room to grow, however she is faced with a tough task here on Saturday…ambitiously placed
UNNATURAL LIGHT – the spinround trained 5 Year Old Scratch Bred Bay Mare by Lope De Vega out of a Halo x Fairy King mare switches back to the Dirt Surface where she has recorded three victories and finishing ITM in three other starts; making her 4th career stakes appearance, her previous three finishing far back of the field, connections are hoping the IRE-bred mare benefits from the turf to dirt angle in quest of her first top three stakes placing…might surprise
NO ANGEL HERE – making her first stakes appearance is the lbailey trained 5 Year Old Roan Mare by Speightstown out of the G1 producing mare AN ANGEL FIRST (Medaglia D’Oro); the onetime kingab stable dweller, has been earning a steady paycheck for her new connections cashing a check in 10 of 11 starts for hew new owners, and a career best 105-speed figure has earned her a spot in this week’s ESR feature…would surprise
SIM SALA BIM – to say the irisharse trained 6 Year Old Bay Mare by Magician, out of the multi-stakes producing mare THE DANCING DAME (Kingmambo), has been around the block more than a few times is an understatement; making her 32nd career start, the wily veteran can still hustle a paycheck from an unsuspecting field, but winless in almost 18 months makes this start a daunting task, just don’t get caught watching the paint dry…win one for Shooter
Handicapping the Field
Have you ever entered one of those race’s where you think you have a good chance of winning only to later on look at the entries and wonder what you were thinking? That’s what we have in this week’s ESR feature. I’d love to handicap the hell out of the pace and distance of this race, but the fact is there is only 1 of 2 horses that will win this race, and neither are about to let a horse loose on the lead or a perfect trip stand in their way of victory.
There is no doubt the bonk trained MS. GILL would have been one of the favorites in the G2 Encino Man this weekend, so the fact that he shows up with his filly in the ESR race speaks volumes. I give her the edge over kingab’s DANCE ON THE NILE simply because I believe MS. GILL is better suited to the 9-furlongs. Make no mistake though, either will win this, should the other falter. The rest of the race is merely a battle for Third Place.
POPPET CADET turned in an impressive effort LTO in the Wondergirl Angie Dirt Filly but has not faced any fillies and mares the caliber of MS. GILL and DANCE ON THE NILE, and if it was only one of them to beat in this field, I’d give her a shot.
YACKPOT CADET is always capable of a huge effort, but it’s approaching a year since her last victory and I just don’t think she can stop the clock this time around.
MUSIC IS MINE may have found her niche in her last start, but her struggles with consistency make her only a minor player in this field.
QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA and MAYA’S JOY are both capable performers and likely candidates to gain a piece of the purse.
COMPLETE PACKAGE always turns in a solid performance, but her window of opportunity is closing, and I don’t see a stakes victory credited to her breeding profile.
TAPPED FOR GOLD is ambitiously placed but could be one of those fillies that doesn’t know how good she can be.
UNNATURAL LIGHT, NO ANGEL HERE, and SIM SALA BIM seem the least likely to pull off the upset.
MS. GILL – strictly the one to beat
DANCE ON THE NILE – needs to dig in for the added distance
POPPET CADET – preferred off last
