Post Time: Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 2:30 p.m.
Minnesota having record breaking snowfall totals somehow gets the track ready for this exciting running of the Pie Guys Tipping Stakes. I guess this is the luxury of the sim, in that we get to run our horses and stay warm in front of the fireplace regardless of actual real life weather conditions. I have flown into Minneapolis where the temps are cold and the winds cutting like a knife to travel the track and head to the barns to speak with the owners, trainers and jockeys for what should be an exciting race for these sprinting 3 year old colts and geldings that have entered in this tough field of ten horses to run in this Grade 3 event. Now that the morning line odds and post positions have been set let’s take a look at this field for the running of the Pie Guys Tipping Stakes here in Minnesota.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Barbara Dimples 14/1 jakematt7 K Bowen
This lightly raced gelding by Noble’s Promise with only three career starts has done nothing but find the wire first in all three of his outings. His last race was on 01/05/2019 in Washington going 5 furlongs in the Mine Pumps Dirt Sprint. He came off the pace to clip the wire first by a head. His hot streak could be broken if he fails to find a little more fire in his legs against this field. He does have a seasoned jockey and local favorite in K Bowen to take the ride with him.
2. Nyquist’s Pulpit 4/1 dontbetonme B Sprague
This Nyquist scratch bred joins the field after a disappointing last time out on 01/19/2019 here in Minnesota in the 9.5 furlong Franco Invasion Dirt Route. He placed 10th in that race and was 10 lengths back at the wire. The distance looked a little long for this colt and he drops down to a much shorter distance for this race and moves up in Class for his first Graded attempt. If he can adjust dropping down to this shorter distance he could factor in this race.
3. Struck By A Vixen 4/1 redhill3 B Orazio
This Grade 3 winning colt sired by A.P. Arrow had a very nice last outing on 01/01/2019 in Indiana in the Grade 3 Special Bid Stakes where he grabbed the lead at the third call and could not be ran down. He hit the wire first in this 6 furlong race. He has only failed once to hit the boards in eight career starts. Coming off a nice win, grabbing a nice jockey and a good gate for his running style should make him a horse to look for in this race.
4. Ballers 6/1 ojcbets B Ireland
This stakes winning colt is another scratch bred by Nyquist. He had no trouble in his last outing on 02/02/2019 running 5 furlongs in a $48,700 NW2X Allowance race in Germany. He has the experience for this race but enters with some looming concerns he will need to overcome to contend. He is on a short rest and has a long travel to get here to Minnesota that could be a factor in his performance. He has much to handle to show he has the ability to brush off the concerns that could haunt him today.
5. Sky Danzers 12/1 deuce3 O Man
Sired by Skylord this colt will make his first attempt to compete at the stakes level and he has taken a huge jump in Class entering this Grade 3 Stakes. His last outing was on 01/19/2019 in Indiana in a Local $14,600 NW2L Allowance of which he won handily going 5 furlongs. Concerns to overcome for him will be taking a big jump in Class with the lack of stakes experience. He will need to show a little more leg contending against this field.
6. Free Suppers 5/1 goldeneagle O Parker
This Stakes Placing gelding sired by Shalaa has been running on the turf quite a bit in his career, but in all four of his dirt outings he has never been off the boards. Starting his career as a Claimer he has shown much improvement over time and his dirt performances give me more confidence in him today. One point of concern is the heavy racing schedule this gelding has been pushed to take on. He has already ran four races this 2019 season. He looks like he needs a little time off as his last two outings were pretty lack luster on the turf.
7. Nine Ships Back 7/1 bm3 V Berwick
This Astern colt nabbed his Stakes Placing badge in his last outing with a nice run going 6 furlong in Texas in the Ancient World Dirt Sprint of which he was caught in the stretch and placed second a ½ length back at the wire. He ran a nice 97 speed in that race. He is moving up in Class but if he can bring that speed with him and his jockey can get him positioned he should be a contender to watch here in Minnesota.
8. Run Sequence 9/1 bbrs2 Vi Singleton
This lightly raced colt sired by Runhappy has never been off the boards in his three career starts. He has won his last two races and has shown he can maneuver on an off track. But he has never raced in Stakes company and is taking a big jump in Class for this race. His last outing was on 01/26/2019 when he ran in New York going 6.5 on a Good Track in a $48,700 NW2L Allowance. He had a nice 95 speed rating in that race and if he can bring that forward with him to Minnesota he could be a factor.
9. Circleberg 16/1 monsters1 F Leghorn
Sired by Circular Quay this colt was earmarked as the long shot in the field by the morning line odds makers. He has been running on the turf since May of last year and makes a switch to dirt as he takes a jump in Class to compete against this field. His last three stakes attempts which were on the turf having been fruitless and disappointing which is a concern of the morning line odds makers. He does pick up a local favorite jockey for the mount which will draw a crowd for him at the betting window. He has much to prove and overcome. I hope he has a good transition back to dirt and can prove he can contend with this field.
10. Alottafun 6/1 xpansion8 E Sharp
Drawing the outside post should not be damaging to this Bradbury’s Luck colt as he tends to come from the mid to back of the pack and close late. Under new ownership this horse has shown much improvement and the ability to win at the Stakes level. Currently on a Hot Streak with three nice wins in his last three outings he will be traveling here from Dubai to meet and contend against this field. His last outing going 5 furlongs in the Tempest Louis Dirt Sprint back on 01/12/2019 found himself in the winner’s circle. He is making a long travel which is a little concerning. But I think he should be a contender in this race. Watch for him to close late in the stretch.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
1. Nine Ships Back: Comes off a nice performance in Texas and likes to run fast and up front.
2. Struck By A Vixen: Looks to be a possible repeat offender for another G3 win.
3. Alottafun: A few small concerns, but looks to be ready to prove himself a contender at this level.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Run Sequence: A nice price on a nice horse at 9/1 will get the nod as my long shot today. Much improved and looks ready to contend in this field.
