In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, about 50,000 women brought together by Women Strike for Peace, marched in 60 cities in the United States to demonstrate against nuclear weapons. It was the largest national women’s peace protest of the 20th century.

A field of Eight Three Year Old New York Bred Fillies will enter the Big Apple starting gate in the $100,000 ESR No Nukes is Good Nukes Stakes.  The race will be run at Six and a Half Furlongs over the Dirt Course.

DBENNYANDJENNYSHOW – long or short, wet or dry conditions, it doesn’t seem to matter to this winner of five of seven career starts; the kingab trained 3 Year Old Brown Filly by Here Comes Ben has never finished worse than second in her career and turned in a solid effort last time out to finish second in the ESR Make Love Not War Stakes following a two-month layoff; the talented New York-bred filly will be primed for a top effort here on Saturday while making her second start off the layoff; the field’s top contender looks to record her first victory in the new year…one to beat

INDY INVASION – the trotter1 trained 3 Year Old Roan Filly by Normandy Invasion has put together an impressive record in her six race career with two wins and four second place finishes, however she has compiled an imposing past performances against small fields and questionable competition; despite her past success the beneficiary of good placement will face her toughest challenge here on Saturday and will have to prove her fine record isn’t just a matter of good fortune…your call

OFF CITY – so well thought of by the beisbol racing stables, the lightly raced 3 Year Old Chestnut Filly by Majestic City was entered into the Grecian Flight Stakes in only her second career start after posting a victory in her racing debut; a lackluster effort in the Grecian Flight Stakes did not alter the opinion of her handlers as she took on the boys in her next start and finished second in a Local Allowance sprint while posting a career best 84-speed figure; the promising filly enters Saturday’s field a more experienced and focused runner and should be on tap for a top effort…might surprise

MISSION OF EVIL – the casino trained 3 Year Old Light Grey Filly of Mission Impazible was unable to dictate the pace in the ESR Make Love Not War Stakes last time out fading to a 7th place finish, 7 ¼ lengths behind the winner; turning back into a sprint, where she has finished first and third in two career starts, should find the non-winner of two on the lead from the gate as she looks to control the early fractions in her third Stakes appearance…must not falter

MODERN GOLD – to say this sremel trained 3 Year Old Bay Filly by Al Khali is anything less than spectacular would minimize what she has achieved in only three career starts; referring to her as a Maiden is merely a matter of semantics; only second place finishes to ESR Stakes winners NYW MISSILE CADET and IN SWEET SONG in the ESR Skyscraper and ESR 59th Street Bridge Stakes respectively have prevented this talented filly from adding a checkmark in the win column; while she could have found a softer spot to land this week, connections are determined to get this highly regarded local-bred a victory at a high level of competition…main threat

FRUITY PEBBLES – the irisharse trained 3 Year Old Brown Filly by Here Comes Ben will try her hand for the first time over the Dirt Course; the highly regarded New York-bred enters this field after competing in the Open Bred ESR Queen of the Turf Challenge where she competed against some of the top 2yo turf fillies in the ESR Residency, and was considered one of the top picks in the Series finale; turning back while switching surface is a familiar MO for these connections and only a disdain for either modification would keep her from finding the finish line first…dangerous

STILL CADET – facing winners for the first time is the cadet trained 3 Year Old Bay Filly by Tencendur; the 5th place finisher of the ESR Incurable Optimist Special three races back faced the likes of IN SWEET SONG and MODERN GOLD before breaking her maiden last time out in a NY Local MSW while racing around two turns; turning back into a sprint, the improved and more experienced local talent could produce a better result than her run in the Incurable Optimist and could be a factor off her recent effort…in good form

DEHERE SHE GOES – the kody trained 3 Year Old Brown Filly by Here Comes Ben is making her racing debut here on Saturday; while she faces a near impossible task, I might remind you of the success of MISSION OF EVIL who has followed a similar path with a great deal of success…in tough

Handicapping the Field

Although this is only an eight horse field, the competition level in not the least diminished by its’ limited number of participants.  DBENNYANDJENNYSHOW, MODERN GOLD, and FRUITY PEBBLES have to be considered the major players in this ESR feature.

DBENNYANDJENNYSHOW must be considered the top choice in this field by way of her shear dominance in sever career starts.  The absence of HURACAN MARIA, an early scratch, only enhances her chances for victory.

MODERN GOLD is certainly the main threat to DBENNYANDJENNYSHOW having shown remarkable tenacity despite entering the race as a maiden.  It is only a matter of time before she cashes in on and an ESR victory, but I think she might be better suited for a route and could have to wait for another day to graduate.

FRUITY PEBBLES has been facing much better in three career starts and owns a second place finish in an Open Bred Stakes.  A surface and distance switch are the only obstacles that could keep her from victory on Saturday, but those are compelling factors that must to be answered.

MISSION OF EVIL is better suited for this sprint but should feel some pressure in the early going questioning how much she will have left entering the stretch.

INDY INVASION has had the benefit of racing against small fields with questionable ability and is the type that can easily be over bet at the windows.  Even her debut victory against eleven competitors is somewhat suspect as all eleven are now claimers or still maidens.

STILL CADET is the improving sort and could turn in a fine effort, but it might take a career best to win here on Saturday.

OFF CITY will likely need a step back from such a high level of competition and regroup her energy through conditions.  She should however benefit from this outing.

DEHERE SHE GOES is in tough if her racing debut.

The Picks

DBENNYANDJENNYSHOW – the kingab train keeps rolling

FRUITY PEBBLES – what can I say, I’m cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs too

MODERN GOLD – would be top choice around two turns

  2. Thank you Pete for making being an esr resident so enjoyable. This was another fine read from the pen of the master!

  3. Great artical again! Always enjoy reading these. I hope my filly meets expectations. I tried to go for a mdn but this was to tempting to bring her back in since she was ready. Fingers crossed I did not make a mistake.

  4. Im gonna come close one of these days… and her mama was a sprinter on dirt.. maybe she’ll make the course.
Thanks as always Pete.. great job..!!

  5. Thorough, very thorough. Usually you get this predictions right with pinpoint accuracy, but this time I don’t think my horse is 7th of 8. I’m thinking 3rd or 4th.

Does it mean anything? Not really, but I need a little encouragement in the face of yet another beatdown at the hands (hooves?) of the Kingab steamroller.

    Thanks Pete!

  6. Pete, if your articles weren’t such great reading, I don’t think I could continue to endure this weekly punishment. Thank you sir, I’ll have another.
