MELLOW YELLOW

The rumor that one could get high from smoking dried banana skins was started by Country Joe McDonald in 1966.  It was believed to be a hallucinogenic drug.  Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan put it to music and the price of bananas sky-rocketed in the 60’s. People spent hours laboriously scraping the inside of banana peels, boiling the unappetizing residue obtained, then drying the remains in their ovens before finally rolling a joint in search of the promised high from the fictional psychoactive substance dubbed Bananadine.

The Race

A Field of Ten Three Year Old Colts and Geldings will enter the Big Apple starting gate in the $100,000 ESR Mellow Yellow Stakes.  The race will be run at Nine Furlongs over the Dirt Course.

CUQUI CACHETES – when two of your four last starts have come at the graded level and your most recent outing was a second place finish in the Wizard Of Winter Dirt Juvenile then it would be wise to take notice of the ivanyamil trained 3 Year Old Bay Colt by Classic Empire; a 5th place finish to the 17th ranked Male 3yo TELAH in the G3 Charcoal Breeder’s Cup paves the way for a trip along the Derby Trail, and a victory in the ESR feature would set him well on his way…one to beat

DIEVAS – the pointguard trained 3 Year Old Bay Colt by Giant’s Causeway takes a two race win streak into Saturday’s ESR feature; cleverly placed in his last two outings the streaking KY-bred will need to up his game against formidable foes as he travels nine panels for the first time in his career in his second stakes appearance…faces tougher

HIGHWAY GHOST – winner of four of eight career starts, the trotter1 trained 3 Year Old Light Grey Colt by Shaman Ghost steps away from the local scene for only the second time in his eight race career, the first a fifth place finish in the G3 Special Bid Stakes at six furlongs; already established as a successful sprinter on the California circuit, connections are hoping to achieve the same success with the CA-bred racing around two turns, a task that fell short in his last outing…must show more

EXPEDITES – the spinround trained 3 Year Old Light Grey Colt by Not A Single Doubt certainly has been keeping tougher company over his three starts, the most prominent coming in the G3 Cryogenics Juvenile three races back  when he finished fourth against EOY Winner and top ranked Three Year Old Colt INTO BEING NICE; although that start did not catapult him  to a victory in his next two outings he still kept good company in the Fact Of The Matter Dirt Juvenile, but it was his 10th place finish in the Mary Wanna Smoke Dirt Juvenile LTO against a somewhat ordinary field that casts some doubts about his chances here on Saturday; freshened, connections are hoping some time away will reenergize this AUS bred and return him to his winning ways…chance off best

DOCTOR JAYMZ – the ace trained 3 Year Old Bay Colt by Gun Runner has a top three finish in five of his six career starts and makes his first stakes appearance, another that has been cleverly placed over his last three outings, his lone route saw him give way coming for home after carrying a commanding lead into the stretch; the KY-bred employed a different strategy in his last start playing the hunter instead of the hunted and rallied in the stretch to grasp a narrow victory in an Allowance race in Kentucky…must not falter

AKA DAVID DENNISON – the casino trained 3 Year Old Bay Colt by First Dude is the only horse in the field that has raced in an ESR Rez Race, that the ESR My Will Come Hopeful where he finished third to REEF TAX who was scratched from this field to enter into the G2 The Land’s End next week; the FL-bred steps out of Local competition where he has recorded two wins in his three local starts and although he was competitive in that ESR feature, will he be good enough to go all the way…only Stormy Daniels knows

MR. DOUBLE A.P. – everything about the pedigree of the kody trained 3 Year Old scratch-bred Brown Colt by American Pharoah out of an A.P.Indy x Mr. Prospector mare suggests this regally bred Colt should savor the nine panels of the Saturday feature, yet losing ground in his mile race two back has me shying away from a full endorsement; sure it was only his second career start and first around two turns, and he certainly can improve on that effort as a 3yo, but I am still reluctant; if this was a sprint there would be no hesitancy on my part to consider him a major player, but for now I will take a look-see approach…might surprise

WAR IS REALLY BAD – of course war is really bad, it’s terrible, it goes without saying right?  Unless you are talking about the American Funk Band War, then that’s bad in an inverted way, or War, the children’s card game, then war is fun, and of course the ever popular street game, I Declare War on…well that’s just exhausting; alas we are talking about the beisbol trained NY-bred 3 Year Old Brown Gelding by War Dancer who is listed at 31-1 by the oddsmaker bringing us right back from where we started, war is really bad…my apologies for taking liberties

VOYAGE OF CHARON – making only the third start of his career is the cadet trained 3 Year Old Bay Colt by Pioneerof the Nile; the third foal of the G1 winning Dam GRIM BATOL (Medaglia D’ Oro) was spectacular in his Maiden victory last time out closing from far off the pace to draw away from a field of talented 3yo’s in a 9-furlong race in New York; although this KY-bred is jumping several conditions to compete here on Saturday, he has both the pedigree and ability to be a factor in his first stakes appearance…might be this good

KING AND HIS CAT – it took four outings for the kingab trained 3 Year Old Light Grey Colt by Bernardini to exit the maiden ranks, but he did it so significantly, recording the win in his first start as a 3yo while racing at 9-furlongs for the first time in his career and posting a 100-speed figure in the effort; finishing second to the multi stakes winning ABOVE THRESHOLD in his previous outing served notice of things to come for this promising KY-bred, and his chances are further enhanced in the ESR feature after two horses exited his Maiden win with victories in their next start…dangerous

Handicapping the Field

This week’s ESR feature is an especially competitive race with no one horse standing out among the rest.  Any horse in this field of ten can emerge as the next hot topic on the Derby backstretch, and while there is still a lot to do to achieve that goal, the potential for greatness will fill the Big Apple starting gate.

I know it’s starting to sound like a broken record, but kingab’s KING AND HIS CAT was so impressive in his maiden win last out, and key races have just followed him over his last three starts.  Yes, the leap from maiden to stakes is ambitious, but he is one of the rare exceptions to that rule.

VOYAGE OF CHARON is another that takes the mighty leap from maiden to stakes, and while he doesn’t follow the key race aspect that KING AND HIS CAT has, his powerful stretch drive combined with a stamina influenced heritage is well-suited to the pace of this race.

CUQUI CACHETES and EXPEDITES have faced off against some of the top Three Tear Old’s in the Sim.  CUQUI CACHETES has to be considered a major player in here based on his last start and the company he has been keeping while EXPEDITES will have to overcome a two month layoff.

DIEVAS and DOCTOR JAYMZ may not be as good as their recent form would indicate but have the opportunity to dispel that observation with a good effort here on Saturday.  Edge goes to DOCTOR JAYMZ.

MR. DOUBLE A.P. could be the biggest surprise in this whole field.  Now attempting two turns for the first time as a 3yo could result in a whole different outcome for this regally bred Colt.

AKA DAVID DENNISON and HIGHWAY GHOST are likely to battle early on leaving both of them on empty turning for home.

Perhaps I was a bit too harsh on WAR IS REALLY BAD.  The NY-bred does have a victory traveling around two turns which is a lot more than I can say about some of his rivals, but at 31-1 well, what was it Edwin Starr said, “war what is it good for…absolutely nothing.”  Do I really have to say it again?

The Picks

CUQUI CACHETES – experience gets it done

KING AND HIS CAT – kind you hope you might get a price, only to find out you’re not the only wise guy

VOYAGE OF CHARON – he’ll be fastest of all in the stretch

  1. In the 70′s, kids ran to grocery stores, grab cans of whip cream, and get what was called a whippit(nitrous oxide) from the can, before the whip cream came out, then put them back on the shelves…ahh to be an adolescent again…rofl

  2. Maybe I can paraphrase what I think you meant to say – “WAR IS REALLY BAD” is really bad. Which is pretty good.

  3. What more can be said? Simply outstanding! Good luck to all!

  4. Splendid coverage as usual, Pete. Tough race! Good luck guys.

  5. Don’t know what to think, my horse is your favorite. He is in tip top shape, hoping the nine furlongs is what the doctor ordered.

  6. Special thanks to donny b. for mistakenly entering a NY bred. I MAY not finish last. I did purchase my horse a round-trip ticket, so hope this one tuffens him up for future Florida racing.

Great job as usual Pete…and stop hogging the Bananadine.
