The Land’s End

Grade 2 in Kentucky, Restricted to 3 Year Olds

Distance: 9 Furlongs

Track Conditions: Fast Dirt

Post Time: Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 2:30pm

Fourteen colts and geldings will be taking to the track on Sunday at post time for the running of The Land’s End in Kentucky where they will be traveling a distance of 9 furlongs.  There are many decorated horses in this race that will be looking to gather points in an attempt to make it to the Bluegrass in May.  Going this distance and in Kentucky will help in giving valuable information to the trainers and owners if their horse has the stamina to compete in Kentucky in May if their horse qualifies to make the run for the Roses.  Back here in my home in Kentucky I have had time to go take a look around the track and walk the barns looking at the horses that will be running in The Land’s End.  The morning line odds are set and post positions drawn.  Let us go take a preview of this nice field of fourteen horses who will take to the starting gate on Sunday.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  Jittering Giant  11/1                                   friscojazz                             N Gunn

This colt sired by Giant’s Causeway found his way back to the top of the boards in Kentucky in his last outing going 8.5 furlongs in a $48,700 Local NW4X Allowance where he tamed the field getting up by 2 lengths at the wire on 02/02/2018.  He takes a jump in Class here and may need to find an extra gear against this competitive field.

2.  Rizzen Knight  14/1                                    rac10                                     R Zamora

This colt found his way to a GP Badge in his last outing on 02/09/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in Louisiana in the G3, Risen Star Stakes where he placed 2nd and was 1 ¾ back at the wire.  This Drosselmeyer colt ran a 104 speed that day finding triple digits for the first time.  The odds makers showed him no respect making him the second longest shot in the field.  But this horse deserves to be looked at and not ignored.

3.  This Is America  11/1                                 redhill                                   E Seifert

His owner grabs the attention of a good jockey to take the ride with his colt sired by Uncle Mo.  In his last outing he proved he could go the distance of 9 furlongs when he ran on 01/30/2019 in New York in a $75,000 Open Allowance.  He hit the wire first in that race stalking the pace.

4.  Invincible Emperor  8/1                            dixon                                     J Joseph

I his last two outing this colt sired by I Am Invincible ran in Graded company.  He placed 2nd in the G2, Club Stakes back in November of last year and 4th in the G3, The Good Cow Stakes in his last outing on 02/02/2019.  In both of these graded attempts he hit triple digit speed ratings.  He has never gone the distance of 9 furlongs before so this is new territory for him.  He likes to close late so look for him to pick off horses after the third call.

5.  Vuldngrav  7/1                                             lenny21                                 L Radzinski

The owner gets a familiar jockey to take the mount for this ride on his Giant’s Causeway colt.  They rode together in their last outing on 02/02/2019 in California going 9 furlongs in the G3, The Scam of which they hit the boards 3rd together.  In six career starts he has never been off the boards.  He has shown he has the legs to go the distance in his last two outings.  He likes to run upfront and could push the pace in this race.

6.  Risen Empire  12/1                                     blackhand                           H Ross

He is sired by Soaring Empire and last ran on 02/09/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in the G3, Risen Star Stakes where he placed a closing 5th but ended up 4 lengths back at the wire.  He ran a respectable 101 speed in that race and was attempting to close the gap.  Perhaps a little added distance will help him in competing here in The Land’s End under the heavy hand of H Ross who is flying in to take the ride.

7.  Reign In Spain  10/1                                   andermanis                        B Child

This Roan colt sired by Tiznow ran his last race in Maryland on 02/16/2019 in a $60,000 Open Allowance of which he found the wire first and was 2 ¼ out in front.  The triple digit speed mark has eluded him thus far in his career.  He may need to find another gear in his bag of tricks and show he can go the added distance in this race.  In his best races he has shown the desire to come off the pace.

8.  Hick Town Deputy  13/1                           ddkstables35                     R Bokie

In his last outing this colt sired by Speightstown made his Stakes début in Florida on 02/15/2019 in the 8.5 furlong Magical Merlin Dirt Challenge.  He hit the wire 2nd and was off the leader by 2 ¼ lengths, but he was closing the gap.  The added distance in this race may be to his liking.

9.  Dreamin Of A Tune  6/1                           vegasone                            A Rolling

This Distorted Humor colt has been dreamin of more than just tunes and has only found himself off the boards once in 7 career starts.  His last outing came on 02/02/2019 in Florida going 8 furlongs in the G3, The Good Cow Stakes where he showed up 2nd with a respectable 106 speed rating.  He gets a good jockey draw today that will need to help him on the ride going added distance.  He likes to run up front or just off the lead.  I would expect him to attempt to do the same in this race.

10. Darkpuku  28/1                                          deeprock34                        J Caves

Sired by The Gurkha he seems to have made a nice transition to dirt back in October of last year and has been running on this surface ever since.  The morning line odds makers give him no love, making him the long shot in the field.  Concerns include speed ratings, but he does have a couple of things in his favor.  He showed he could go the distance when he ran on 01/01/2019 when he went 10 furlongs in the Dyna Form Dirt Challenge which he won by 3 lengths.  He also picks up a good jockey to take the ride, which should draw support at the betting window.

11. Channel Your Dream  9/1                       tfon32                                   J Benisz

The top money winner in the field will not go off as the favorite today despite some very nice recent outings at the Graded level.  He is sired by Graydar and ran last on 02/16/2018 in Vermont in the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers Stakes.  He showed up at the wire 3rd and was 2 ¼ lengths back but with good effort and was closing the gap coming from way back to make a closing charge in the home stretch.  He has gone the distance which should not be an issue and his owner has found a good jockey to ride up top.  He could be a factor in this outing with fast margins by the rabbits up front.

12. Reef Tax  9/1                                               trotter11                              Z Ayya

This Maclean’s Music colt has only been off the boards once in 9 career starts.  He has an impressive Allowance career, but has never ran in Stakes or Graded company.  He can go the distance as proven in his last outing on 02/02/2019 in New York going 9 furlongs in a $48,700 Open NW4L Allowance of which he took the wire 1st, by 2 lengths with a repeat of a 100 speed rating.  He is on a Hot Streak winning his last three races.  He will need to be hot again to compete with this field which contains many more experienced horses as he takes a big jump in Class.

13. Help Your Brothers  8/1                          billzelite2                             R Hansen

This Cupid colt has been lightly raced but with good results.  He too is on a Hot Streak coming into this race with three wins in his last three outings.  He only has four life time starts and has never found himself off the boards.  His last outing came on 02/02/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in Arizona in the Danzig With Sal Dirt Route.  He hit the wire first in that race showing up his closest contender by 1 ¾ lengths.  He ran a respectable 107 speed in that race which he will need to bring forward as he takes a jump in Class.

14. Icecream Warrior  13/1                           redriddler                            E Sharp

Heavily raced, this colt sired by Majestic Warrior has shown he can perform on both turf and dirt surfaces.  His last outing was on the dirt in India on 02/28/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in a $60,000 Open Allowance of which he crossed the wire 1st by 1 ¼ lengths coming just off the pace to close nicely.  He has never raced in Graded company before and the triple digit speed ratings have eluded him.  He picks up a good jockey to take the ride with him who may need to reach into their bag of tricks and put him in contention.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Channel Your Dream:  His last two outing looked good.  He should content here today in an important race for him in hunt of some big points in this race.

2.  Dreamin Of A Tune:  If he can handle the added distance he should prove a top contender in this field.

3.  Invincible Emperor:  Looks solid and looks ready to contend to hit the boards.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Rizzen Knight gets the nod today as my long shot pick at 14/1.  He could very well rise up in this race and hit the boards with a solid run.  He gets my bet on some exotic  tickets for sure.
