It is but a short hop from Kentucky down to Louisiana where a full field of fourteen top colts and geldings will be running to lock in their spot for the Bluegrass Derby coming up the first Saturday in May.  All horses running here in the All Saints Derby are well decorated and qualified having a Graded Placing or Graded Win making this a very tough and formidable field.  Also, many of the top jockeys throughout the Globe have flown in to take the ride on top of these contenders and try to bring their horse home first to the finish line and capture a bid to the Bluegrass Derby.  I have taken a walk around the track and been over to the stables to visit with the trainers, owners and jockeys and these fine horses that will make their big run on Saturday.  The morning line odds have been set and the post positions drawn.  Let us go take a preview of how these horses match up here in Louisiana for the All Saints Derby.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  Dishwasher  8/1                                          pwong01                             A Jolly

He rallied and closed the door in Dubai in his last out on 02/16/2018 in the G3, The Dubai 2000 Guineas.  He went 8 furlongs that day getting up by 1 ¼ lengths at the wire.  This colt sired by Mshawish has not been off the boards since back in July of last year.  He transitioned to the dirt surface this past October and has found it to be favorable to him.  He has much stakes experience and this to be his first G1 attempt.

2.  Logical Cause  19/1                                     flagdown4                           J Ruckriegel

This Bay colt was sired by Giant’s Causeway and is a previous G2 winner when he found the wire first back in November of last year in the G2, The Ransom in New York.  His last outing came on 02/16/2019 in the Vermont IS 4 Lovers stakes.  He did not fare well in this G1 outing and finished way back in 10th at the wire.  He looks to find his legs again here in Louisiana as yet again he faces a very tough crowd.

3.  Gold Zone  10/1                                          spiderman1                        D Givens

I spoke with jockey D Givens who has flown in from Kentucky to take the ride on this Awesome Again colt.  He assures me he is riding a horse that can compete as this big Bay colt takes to the track with three wins in his last three outings.  He last ran on 01/12/2019 in the G3, The Legoland where he went gate to wire to win by 1 ¼ lengths where he hit a triple digit speed rating of 103 for the first time.  He does take a jump in Class today and will be running in a G1 event for the first time.

4.  Topsey Turvay  31/1                                  applefarms8                       F Gossett

Today this colt sired by Giacomo gets little respect from the morning line odds makers as they dish him as the long shot in this field of fourteen.  In six career starts he has only been off the boards once.  This came in his last outing on 02/16/2019 in the G1, Vermont IS 4 Lovers where he ran a very disappointing race and showed up 13th at the wire with a decline in speed rating as he went 9 furlongs for the first time.  The word is he just had an off day and his owners look for better out of him running here in Louisiana at 8.5 furlongs.

5.  Ready for A Forty  9/1                              desimster6                         M Kelly

This More Than Ready colt representing the Blazing Saddles residency has a nice career starts and has only been off the boards twice.  He takes a jump in Class today that his owners have been preparing him to make.  His last outing came on 03/01/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in Arkansas in the Take It Easy Dirt Route where he showed up at the wire 3rd and was 2 ½ lengths back.  Also comes into this race off a short rest of only three weeks.  He has some obstacles to overcome but has been running very well at the Listed Stakes level.

6.  Schumershutdown  9/1                           rgangfarms                         P Jolly

The owner of this Tapit sired colt contracts with a local favorite jockey here in Louisiana to take the ride.  This will surely generate some action for him at the betting window on Saturday.  In his last outing going 9 furlongs in Florida in the G2, Fountain Of Ute.  He met against some very tough company in that race and found his way to the wire in 3rd and 4 lengths off the lead.  It was still a very nice effort for him and hit ran a respectable 104 speed rating of which he hit the triple digit mark for the first time.

7.  Big Wong  7/1                                               azul25                                   M Zeus

The owner gets jockey M Zeus to fly in from Spain to take the mount on his gelding sired by Nyquist.  This G3 winner put that badge in his cap in his last outing on 02/09/2019 in the Risen Star Stakes.  He went gate to wire and ran a nice 106 speed rating in that race.  He will be representing the Only Stayers residency today.  I spoke with the owner of this horse and he informed me he felt he had a good horse and the only concern he expressed is if he had him ready for this outing.

8.  Pound The Rock  10/1                               nycowboy313                    V Jennings

This colt sired by No Nay Never is the top money winner in the field but he will not go off as our morning line favorite for this race.  He has missed the boards three times in his last five outings.  But to his credit it must be acknowledged he was running in top Graded events against some very tough competition.  His last race came on 02/16/2019 in the G1, Vermont IS 4 Lovers where he placed 7th and was 5 ¾ lengths back at the wire.  His owner grabs a nice jockey to take the ride with his horse and try to get him back on the boards in this event.

9.  I’lladdittomylist  10/1                                asrdistorted                       R Bokie

Representing the All-Star Racing residency is a Bay colt that is a scratch bred by Distorted Humor.  He grabs a familiar jockey out of Virginia in R Bokie who will take the ride with him.  They have paired up before with success.  In his last outing on 02/02/2019 in Florida going 8 furlongs in the G3, The Good Cow he hit a triple digit speed of 103 for the first time.  He showed up 3rd in that race.  In seven career starts he has only been off the boards once.  He looks to keep his record intact.

10. Johnny Z  13/1                                            babies7                               T Ace

This Grade Place performing colt sired my Mr. Z hit the triple digit speed rating for the first time with a 100 in his last outing on 01/13/2019 going 8 furlongs in Indiana in the Squal Me-Halo Dirt Memorial.  He showed up at the wire 2nd in that race and 1 ¾ back.  A top jockey in T Ace is coming in from Texas to take the mount on Saturday and help in trying to find the wire first.  This colt has run in Graded company on multiple occasions.  Perhaps the jockey can get him show a little more leg as he faces this rough and tumble crowd.

11. Legacy Of Evil  6/1                                     fairhaven1                          L Radzinski

This G3 winning colt sired by Tapit will go off as one of the co-favorites in the morning line.  His owner makes the call to Washington to bring in a familiar jockey who rode his horse back in December of last year in the G1, Movieland Futurity where they crossed the wire together 4th in that race.  The owner then brought his horse to Florida on 02/02/2019 for the 8 furlong, G3, The Good Cow.  He rebounded to cross the wire first coming just off the pace to nail down a nice win and collected a new badge for the trophy case.  He ran a respectable 108 speed rating in that race of which he looks to bring with him as he takes on this big field from one of the outside gates.

12. Flew Too High  6/1                                    signals5                              M Cameron

His owner sends airfare to Australia to bring in M Cameron to take the ride with his big Bay colt sired by Schoolyard Dreams.  The morning line has selected him as the other co-favorite in the field.  Last out in Arkansas on 03/10/2019 in the G3, The Rebel Yell he came up the bride’s maid when he showed up 2nd at the wire.  He had a hard trip in that race from gate thirteen.  He got the lead in the stretch for home but could not hold on to finish the job.  He grabs another outside post today which could be of concern for his trainer.

13. Land Boss  18/1                                          graywolf15                          M Staples

The members of Queensland Racecourse residency will be cheering on another long shot in the race as this Bay colt sired by Street Boss takes to the track.  He is a G1, winner where he got that distinction back in New York last year in September in the G1, Hopeless Stakes.  In his last four Graded attempts he has found them fruitless and that triple digit speed rating has eluded him.  He has a very familiar jockey on top to take the ride with him that will need to reach into his bag of tricks and to get him in contention from an unfavorable outside post.

14. Moonlite Run  12/1                                  chillingfarms3                    W McClendon

Only Stayers residency will be represented by another horse in this race by a Graded Place gelding that was scratch bred by Dortman.  He grabs the far outside post position, but this does not bring as much concern for this late closing gelding.  He last ran on 02/02/2019 going 9 furlongs in California in the G3, The Scam.  He pulled in 4th and was 2 ¼ lengths back.  Thus far triple digit speed rates have eluded him in his career.  McClendon taking the ride out of Vermont will need to grab the whip with a heavy hand and close hard to get his horse into contention.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Legacy Of Evil:  I watched his last race and he broke clean from an outside post with a lot of power. I look for a repeat.

2.  Flew Too High:  He ran most of his last race four wide and had a lot of traffic. He made his way to the front down the stretch but ran out of gas in the final half furlong.  He should compete with a clean trip.

3.  Big Wong:  He got out of the gate quick and to the rail fast in his last race.  He took control down the back stretch leaving his contenders nothing but a chance to hit the wire second behind him.

Tarton’s Long Shot

My long shot today will go to Gold Zone at 10/1.  A modest long shot but the best choice in my view to cash some exotic tickets for a little added money at the window.  Comes off two straight G3 wins and looks the part for this race.
