From the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans,  Louisiana,  the Elite Racing Club presents this month’s stakes event,  the Justify.  We’ll get to see some of the club’s new talent as nine two year olds,  including three fillies,  battle over five and a half furlongs (or ~1100 meters for the metrically inclined) on what should be a fast dirt oval, as the local weather folks forecast clear skies through the weekend.  They’re racing for the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse up for grabs,  while the victorious owner/trainer will collect the lion’s share of the club’s stakes bonus points.
.
Managing director summerset has pulled out all the stops showing the club members his famed southern hospitality in and around the Big Easy.  And he saddles one of the 5/2 co-favorites,  his first time starter,  MAJOR  TAZ.  Mightyforego flies into town with the other co-favorite,  his debut winning filly AWESOME STUFF.  Co-founder jbcri09 sends out the 3rd choice of the handicapper at 7/2 odds,  his first out winning filly SPIRITUAL FREEDOM.  Dunnvilledowns also has a first out winner,  fourth choice YALE GRADUATE at 7/1 on the tote board.  Our other co-founder,  amir1607,  also has a debut winner,  DERANGED WOLF,  though he gets no love from the handicapper at 10/1 on the morning line.  Speaking of no love from the handicapper,  the usually well meant harrylan entry,  this time filly GIVE ME MY BALL,  is held at 10/1 looking to break her maiden in a stakes race.  Dontbetonme has GIRVIN’S STORM CAT at 11/1,  jb3commish has WHO DARES GRINS at 15/1 and newfydowns rounds out the field with ELECTRICO AVORES at 16/1.
.
Some wikipedia notes on the Fair Grounds:  “As early as 1838 Bernard de Marigny, Julius C Branch and Henry Augustine Tayloe, organized races at the “Louisiana Race Course” laid out on Gentilly Road, making it the second oldest site of horse racing in America still in operation, after Freehold Raceway in New Jersey and before the Saratoga Race Course in New York.  In 2009, the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for 65 thoroughbred racetracks in North America.  Of the top fifteen,  New Orleans Fair Grounds was ranked twelfth.   In 1993,  the grandstand was completely destroyed by a seven alarm fire and racing continued with temporary facilities in place for a couple of years.  A new $27 million construction project began in 1994 and the completed grandstand/clubhouse was opened to the public on Thanksgiving Day 1997.  In 2004 Fair Grounds was heavily damaged in Hurricane Katrina,  and was closed for over a year,  until re-opening on Thanksgiving Day 2006.”  A resilient race track that reflects well on the local populace.
.
Back to the race:  there aren’t many past performances to help handicapping here,  so let’s take a look at what we can to see if we may identify the contenders.

SPIRITUAL  FREEDOM                        KY     2F     jbcri92                 E Seifert         7/2
.
Heading up the post parade is this beautiful bay filly,  a first out winner at this distance,  raking in a 72 SP# with a nice late run from midpack.  Scratch bred Mineshaft miss (by Unbridled) can save ground on the fence and pick up the pieces in the lane.  Handicapper makes her the 3rd choice on the board despite facing the boys for the jbcri92 barn.

WHO  DARES  GRINS                             CA     2M     jb3tackle             D Hogin         15/1
.
The jb3tackle stable sends out this boisterous bay colt who tired to 5th in his debut in an open maiden at 6 panels,  grabbing a 63 SP# after taking part in the early fractions.  Game A.P. guy out of the sim mare Integrated (by Elusive Quality) faces faster,  like minded foes here;  hard to recommend.

MAJOR  TAZ                                                    KY     2M     rac10                 A Arthur         5/2
.
Tiznow toughie,  out of the graded placed,  stakes winning sim mare Major Project (by Giant’s Causeway) looks to get his career off to a fast start in a rez stakes;  dam’s previous offspring are a stakes placed and a stakes winner.  Light grey laser from summerset’s rac10 barn has his followers as the local favorite atop the tote at 5/2 odds.

YALE  GRADUATE                                      KY     2M     survivoreh             H Desitter         7/1
.
Burly bay colt was a wire to wire winner first time over in an open maiden at 6 furlongs,  popping a 71 SP#.  Tale Of The Cat tomcat,  out of the sim mare First Day At Yale (by Lord Nelson) looks like he’ll have a say in the early pace chase;  cuts  back in distance,  could hang on if he gets to the front for the survivoreh barn of the dunnvilledowns racing group.

GIVE  ME  MY  BALL                                JPN     2F     harrylanlow53             J Drozd             10/1
.
Reigning club stakes champ harrylan saddles this blushing bay filly,  who got nailed on the line when 2nd in an open maiden at this trip,  ripping a 72 SP# after setting the early pace.  French Deputy fella,  out of the sim are Asomugha (by Hussonet) tired to 3rd in her debut at 5 panels in an open allowance,  pasting a 64 SP# prompting the early leaders. She faces males here and will have company up front;  the handicapper’s giving 10/1 on her lasting in the lane.

AWESOME  STUFF                                    KY     2F     mightyforego41         F Oxon             5/2
.
Chugging chestnut filly led them all the way in her debut at three quarters of a mile,  blasting a 72 SP# as the public choice.  Scratch bred Awesome Again angel (by Seattle Slew),  may be fastest in the early stages;  cuts back in distance,  should be right there at the wire to surprise the guys for the mightforego41 racing operation.

ELECTRICO  ARVORES                        BRZ     2M     whaddyaat             G Wendorff         16/1
.
Forestry fighter,  out of the sim mare Electric Barbara (by Zensational),  settled for 2nd in her season opener in a local maiden at 6 furlongs,  cutting a 62 SP# in a front running performance.  Long striding light grey colt faces others with similar pace intentions,  will need to step up his game if the handicapper is right about this 16/1 newfydowns protege.

DERANGED  WOLF                                  KY     2M     reserx                 C Morris         10/1
.
Yet another with eyes on the front of the pack is this light grey loper,  who wired a hot race maiden in his initial try at this trip over this strip,  sticking a 62 SP# in a four horse affair.  Midshipman mister,  out of the sim mare Dontactup (by Hard Spun),  should be an early pace factor,  could be a horse for the course and out run his 10/1 odds for the reserx barn of the amir1607 empire.

GIRVIN’S  STORM  CAT                        FL     2M     dontbetonme15         X Turner         11/1
.
Watching them all enter the course is this Girvin guy,  out of the sim mare Years Ago (by Parker’s Storm Cat),  who smoked a maiden hot race in his debut,  sizzling a 76 SP# in an easy score.  Bruising bay colt was a close 4th most recently in a NW2L allowance at 6 furlongs,  stabbing a 72 SP# after battling on the front end.  Dontbetonme15 trainee should be prominent early,  could shake loose cutting back to this trip.

Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.
