I have been speaking with a friend of mine I use to work with several years ago in Tucson.  He has been asking that I pay him a visit.  So I thought this would be a great time when I saw this Listed Stakes race for 3 year olds on the card in Arizona.  Arizona claims to have some of the most beautiful sunsets in the United States.  But come this Saturday this field of ten colts and geldings will be running in the heat of the desert at post time.  I arrived and got settled and then went over to the track to speak with some of the owners and jockeys during the morning hours before the sun became blazing hot and heating up the desert.  It appears to me to be a well matched field for this race.  The odds makers have made their morning line choices and post positions have been drawn.  Let’s take a closer look at this field and preview all the entries for the running of the Fifth Circuit Dirt Mile in Arizona.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  Yankee Killer  10/1                                    ticketman3                         J Straw

Out of the first gate will come this colt sired by Mastery.  He as seven career starts and has hit the boards six times.  His last outing came on 03/31/2019 in Mexico when he jumped up in distance to run 9 furlongs that day in the Vengeful Sea Stakes.  He went off at long odds and ended up 5th at the wire just over 3 lengths back.  This Allowance winner will make his second attempt at the Listed Stakes level to try and find a new trophy to be decorated with here in Arizona as he goes out to represent the Empire State Racing (ESR) residency.

2.  OG Speights War  5/1                               baffwidow                          J Dizzle

This nice looking Bay Colt sired by Speightstown will be representing the All-Stars Racing residency today.  He is coming off three nice Allowance wins in a row as he tries to continue that Hot Streak.  His last outing was here in Arizona on 04/02/2019 when he went 7.5 furlongs in a $34,100 NW4X Allowance race that he cruised home to win by 3 lengths.  Jockey, J Dizzle will be flying in from Oregon to take the mount and attempt to get a little more pep in the step as this horse extends his running distance to go around two turns.

3.  Delta Tau Chi Name  6/1                         rabid6                                   C Morten

A bay colt sired by American Pharoah will take to the track representing the Universal Racing Club as he seeks to get on the boards in Listed Stakes company.  His last outing was on 03/29/2019 in Pennsylvania when he traveled 9.5 furlongs in the Sadlers Thorns Stakes.  He showed up a very distant 6th at the wire.  Jockey, C Morten gets the call from Colorado to take the ride and hopefully get this deep closer to fire.

4.  Fionia U Turn  17/1                                    bumlebo5                           L Willis

The morning line odds found no favor for this Allowance winner sired by Congrats.  He goes off as the longest choice in this field having only hit the boards twice in his ten career starts.  He finds the favor of jockey, L Willis to take the mount of which they paired together in this horses last outing here in Arizona.  He too will be representing the Universal Racing Club in his attempt to find new bling for the trophy case.

5.  Daa Daa  11/1                                               bargainben                         B Gulch

Jockey, B Gulch gets the call to fly in from Colorado to take the ride up top of this scratch bred colt (D’WILDCAT x FADAAEI x WINDSOR CASTLE).  He is a prior three time Listed Stakes winner.  In his last race in Norway on 04/06/2019 he hit the wire 2nd in the Iron Cross Stakes.  This nice looking Bay Colt looks to add to his resume here in Arizona at a distance he has shown in the past that he can win at and take the wire first.  The odds appear a little long in the morning line for this horse and those betting could find some cash when they turn in their tickets.

6.  Bigtime Pirate  5/1                                    treasurestables                 M Hobley

This Grey Colt is another scratch bred in the field (GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x DEPUTY MINISTER).  His last outing was his first Listed Stakes attempt of which he showed he could perform.  He ran on 04/13/2019 in the Bg Wellington Boot Stakes of which he found himself on the boards to finish 3rd in that race just off the leader by 1 ¼ lengths.  He will find jockey, M Hobley out of Colorado to take the ride today as he tries to get this SP badge earner to the wire first.

7.  Senator LV  7/1                                            bizalls2                                 K Murray

Here we find one of two geldings in the field and he was sired by Constitution.  This Light Grey Colt will be representing the Only Stayers residency today as he hits the track.  He has one prior Listed Stakes attempt which was back in January of this year of which he found much disappointment.  He came back on 03/02/2019 and went 8 furlongs in California in a $48,700 NW3L Allowance of which he won by 2 lengths and ran a 101 speeding rating, hitting triple digits for the first time.  Jockey, K Murray gets the call to fly in from Washington to take the ride up top and bring this nice gelding home.

8.  Crispy Zenmaster  6/1                              ianwhipkey5                      B Bennington

This Allowance winning colt sired by Zensational will also be getting his second attempt today for an opportunity to hit the boards in a Listed Stakes outing.  His last two races were here in Arizona, so he should be very familiar with the track.  His owner wasted no time in making a call to New Mexico to contract with jockey, B Bennington to ride his nice Light Grey Colt.  This horse has yet to hit the triple digit speed ratings but he has been very close in his last two Allowance races here in Arizona.  He could be one to keep an eye on in this race.

9.  Western Phantom  6/1                            falcondakota                     N Gardner

Our second gelding in the field that is sired by Adlerflug who made a very successful transition to dirt back in January and has won both of his Allowance start this season.  He tends to roll in the middle of the pack and make his move after the third call.  One of the local jockeys from here in Arizona will be taking the mount up top.  He should be a crowd favorite at the betting windows.  This gelding will also be representing the ESR residency as he takes to the track in what will be his first Listed Stakes attempt.

10. Burnt Ends  9/2                                          redhill24                             J Brewer

This colt sired by War Front will get the edge as the slight favorite in the morning line for this race.  This fine colt is on a Hot Streak as he heads to throw his name in the hat for his first Listed Stakes attempt.  J Brewer from British Columbia will be flying in to take the ride up top of this Bay Colt.  The owner brings his horse into this race representing the Blazing Saddles residency.  This colt did bring home a nice 102 speed rating when he ran in the slop in Colorado back in February.  He will need to bring that speed along with him for this race.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Western Phantom:  Keeps improving since making that switch to dirt back in January.

2.  Bigtime Pirate:  Continues to improve and just missed in his last Stakes outing.

3.  Senator LV:  A deep closer that is deserving of a second chance in a Stakes run.  A fast pace would help him.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Daa Daa:  At this price he is looking good.  This horse could easily spoil the crowd and hit the boards.  He gets on my exotic tickets at the betting window.
