Restrictions: 3 Year Old Fillies Only
Distance: 8.5 Furlongs
Track Conditions: Fast Dirt
Post Time: Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2:00pm
As I reviewed the racing forms this morning while having my coffee, I saw this nice Grade 3, The Selena running in Ontario, Canada this weekend. So I thought I would make a couple of calls and see what additional information I could find out about this field of nine, 3 year old fillies that will be contending in this race. They will be moving around a Fast Dirt track on Saturday afternoon covering a distance of 8.5 furlongs. The field of fillies look well decorated and well matched up. It will be difficult to assess who will be crossing the wire first and hitting the boards. The odds makers have set their morning line and post positions have been drawn. Let’s take a closer look at this field of nine fillies and see how they may match up for this running of The Selena.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Visible Quest 5/1 thefarm S Chicken
In the first gate we have a nice scratch bred filly, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT (IRE) x RAINBOW QUEST x NUREYEV. This filly has been running mainly on the turf in her career, but has had some success on the dirt as well. She will be representing the Racing HQ residency today with a local jockey from here in Ontario of S Chicken to ride with her. Her last outing was in Denmark in the G3, Danish 1000 Guineas. She ran fairly flat that day and crossed the wire 5th some 6 lengths back. Her jockey may need to help her find a little more leg as she transitions back to dirt.
2. Drummers Bummers 7/1 tcrowell T Stone
A familiar face in T Stone out of New York will be back on top of this filly as she heads for the track. T Stone has ridden her a couple of times in the past and was unable to get her to perform to his liking and thus brings a little concern. In her last outing she ran in New York on 04/06/2019 in the G2, Mellow Breeze Handicap of which she found herself crossing the wire in a disappointing 13th place. You have to go back to June of last year to find her last win. She is sired by Orb and is in search of glory. I will note that in February and March of this year she did have two 3rd place finishes in Listed Stakes company.
3. Fleetwood Crystal 7/1 fleetwood T Kelly
In her last outing this filly sired by Take Charge Indy had her Hot Streak broken with a very heartbreaking run in the G2, Fantasia Handicap where she showed up way back in 13th place. Prior to that race she brought home three nice wins in a row with one of them being in the Kase-Dismissed Stakes on 02/10/2019. Jockey, T Kelly gets the call to fly in from Pennsylvania to take the mount up top as they go to the gate to represent The Eh Team residency.
4. Shinku Hadoken 6/1 yesguy R Radzinski
This Light Grey filly sired by Unbridled Jen last ran on 04/06/2019 in New York in the G2, Mellow Breeze Handicap. She failed to contend as she did in her two prior races and failed to fire for her owner on that day. Prior to that outing she had two nice Listed Stakes runs of which she won both. She looks to get back on the boards today with jockey, R Radzinki out of New York up top to take the ride with her.
5. Pioneerication 6/1 padrebril D Silver
This filly sired by Pioneerof The Nile will be representing the GR Simsters residency today come post time. She too last ran in New York in the G2, Mellow Breeze Handicap on 04/06/2019 going 8 furlongs. She found good results in hitting the wire 3rd and only ¾ lengths off the lead. Her owner contracts with the same jockey as in that race in D Silver who will travel from Delaware to take the mount. In nine career starts she has hit the boards seven times and has not missed the boards since July of last year. This nice Brown filly has an eye for the wire and could be a good contender here in Ontario.
6. Tiste Andii 8/1 pilotfish5 B Renfroe
This scratch bred, QUALITY ROAD x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x SUNDAY SILENCE will be a first time runner at the Graded stakes level. Her last race was on 03/23/2019 traveling 8.5 furlongs in the Specially Devilish Stakes in Delaware. She hit the boards in 3rd and was 4 ¼ lengths back at the wire running a 95 speed that day. She picks up one of the track favorite jockeys in B Renfroe that should help her get some action at the betting windows. Her jockey may need to find a swat or two with his whip and get her to fire as he tries to keep her just of the lead as she has shown she likes to be in most of her best outings.
7. Maize Barbara 7/2 zbarb1 B Scott
Jockey, B Scott was contracted to fly in from Massachusetts to ride this fine Bay filly. She is a GP badge earner and a scratch bred, HARD SPUN x WOODMAN x AWESOME AGAIN who is seeking her first Graded win. She has came close in her last two outings placing 2nd in the G2, Fantasia Handicap and was also 2nd in the G1, Los Vinegrette Stakes. The odds makers have posted her to be their favorite in this race and with good reason after the results of her last two Graded efforts and running her top speed rating of 106 her last time out. She will be representing the Pasture of Green residency as she takes to the gate.
8. California Hannah 5/1 james22 R Wisniewki
Sired by California Chrome she comes into this race as a prior Allowance winner. She did run in the G2, The Miss Bonnie back in March of this year of which she placed 8th in that race. She has been working a heavy race schedule for her owner as of late. In her last race on 04/29/2019 she ran 9 furlongs in New York in a $67,500 NW5L Allowance and she hit the wire 2nd with a 100 speed rating and hitting triple digits for the first time. Jockey, R Wisniewki from Pennsylvania gets the call from her owner to take the ride with his horse today.
8. Special Ruth G 9/1 maxibar L Callow
You know it is a pretty tight field of contenders when you are the long shot at 9/1 odds. This Bay filly sired by Special Week has found herself in that spot today. Another local jockey in L Callow will take the ride up top for her owner. She last ran on 04/06/2019 going 10 furlongs in California in the Super Glitter Stakes of which she hit the wire 3rd that day. Her two prior races to that were G3 outings of which she was met with much disappointment when she came to the wire 7th in both of those outings. In trying to step up in Class to the Graded levels she has failed to perform for her owner. She looks to break that curse here today in Ontario.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
1. Maize Barbara: With two good Graded results in her last two outings, I must go with the favorite in this race.
2. Pioneerication: Hitting the boards in her last G2 outings I look for her to repeat.
3. California Hannah: This may be her day to strike.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Special Ruth G will get on a few of my exotic tickets today. I do have some concerns with this horse, but I am going to give her a chance to break the curse.
