The Elite Racing Club visits Pimlico Racecourse in the city of Baltimore,  Maryland for its rendition of the middle jewel of the Triple Crown series,  the ERC Preakness Derby.  Contested at the same conditions and distance as its famed namesake,  a full field of fourteen three year olds,  including four upset minded fillies,  will battle it out to snag the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse up for grabs.  The winning owner/trainer will also grab the lion’s share of the stakes bonus points that determines a winner of the club’s Triple Crown contest.  The dirt oval will be listed as “sloppy”,  so the horses,  the jockeys,  and the bettors will need to deal with that.
.
Summerset’s UNION SPORTS will try to make it two for two after taking the  ERC  Kentucky Derby two weeks ago,  but faces a sloppy track and an entire field of fresh faces looking to deny his Triple Crown attempt as he is the only Derby returnee.  Reigning club champ harrylan sends out the stakes winning filly,  WAR BREAKER,  seeking a fourth straight victory.  Co-founder jbcri09 saddles a pair – the filly CUTITOUTWOMAN,  the only graded (G2) winner of this group,  and on the other end of the spectrum,  recent $15,000 claimer winner LEMON PIP.  Dontbetonme also saddles a pair – stakes winner BLOW UP THE MOON,  and recent $100,000 claimer VEGAGOLDENKNIGHTS.  Mightyforego has the multiple stakes placed filly FSS GUNS AND HALOS going to the post,  while larrcamp has the stakes winning colt ATIK stepping back from a pair of graded outings. Out other co-founder amir1607 runs maiden winner SUPPORTIVE RANGE,  while jb3commish goes with the oh for nine maiden WORK OUT DAILY.  Last,  but certainly not least,  the “downs boys”,  newfy and dunnville each send out a pair of representatives;  newfydowns  with MFIVE and LIVE UR LIFE,  dunnvilledowns with the filly KYMARC WALRUS G  and HOATU KARAIHETITI,  who should give the track announcer a challenge during the call of the race.

Heading up the post patrade is this bouncing bay colt,  who exits a stretch running score in an open maiden at 8.25 furlongs on the grass,  blasting a 94 SP# to get his first win.  One back of that he was an OK 6th against winners in the ERC Tapit at a mile and an eighth,  bagging an 89 SP# in his only dirt outing,  and just two plus lengths back of the ERC Derby winner,  UNION SPORTS.  Contributer cub,  out of the graded placed sim mare Lookin Glass (by Forty Niner),  was a nice 2nd in a NW2x allowance at a mile,  banking an 86 SP# in his second career start.  Returns to the dirt,  though his best runs have been on the green;  will need to move forward to threaten the top ones.  Trainer dunnvilledowns on his runner:  “HOATU KARAIHETITI’s speed has improved with every start and I am hoping he can handle the distance.  Hopefully the jockey will hold him back in the early going and he will have lots left for a late break.  Would love to add to my season points total and move up another few spots in the season points challenge. ”

WORK  OUT  DAILY                                ARG     3M     jb3football         J Ingram         25/1

Gleaming chestnut colt is oh-for-nine thus far in his career.  Speedster tired to 5th last time over in an open maiden at a mile,  whacking a 91 SP# after opening a clear lead.  Pure Prize pup out of the sim mare The Grays (by Strike The Gold) set the early fractions but wound up 10th one before that in an open maiden at 7.5 panels,  wrangling an 81 SP#.  In his prior run he couldn’t get to the front and faded to 6th at 7 furlongs,  working out a 77 SP#.  Owner/trainer jb3commish shoots high here;  may be in front early but likely to see most of them flash past the wire before he does.  Handicapper sees him as one of the rank outsiders at 25/1 odds.

WAR  BREAKER                                        KY     3F     harrylanlow11         K Ledwith         7/2
.
Blushing bay filly has never missed the exacta in six starts;  seeks a fourth straight route win off a wire to wire romp in the Alytara Cod listed stakes at 9 furlongs,  smashing a 101 SP# in an impressive outing.  Scratch bred War Front waif (by Seeking The Gold) won a NW3L allowance at a mile and a sixteenth one back of that,  sizzling a 104 SP# stalking the early leader.  In her previous try she came from off the pace to get the money in a NW2L allowance at a mile,  smacking  a 96 SP#.  The morning line favorite at 7/2 odds of the handicapper is in fine form for the harrylan racing operation;  speed in the slop is always dangerous,  she may come home clean as a whistle.

.
Vegas Street viper,  out of the sim mare Office Deputy (by Birdstone) made a big late run for 2nd at 10 furlongs last out in a NW3L allowance,  zapping a 104 SP# from the middle of the pack.  Boisterous brown colt won a local bred allowance at this trip one before that,  zinging a 92 SP# the baclk of the pack.  He could have been had for $100,000 in his prior run in a NW2L claimer,  closing well for 2nd at 6.5 furlongs,  zipping an 84 SP#.  Didn’t seem to care for the off surface in only try in the slop,  but improving runner has won at this distance;  could be a stretch threat if he takes to the Pimlico slop for sharp racing outfit,  the dontbetonme group.

UNION  SPORTS                                         KY     3G     razer1             N Ambrose         4/1
.
ERC Kentucky Derby champ winds up as the second choice of the handicapper after a smashing triumph two weeks ago at Churchill Downs,  crashing a 96 SP# with a powerful stretch run as the post time favorite.  Bucking bay gelding closed for 3rd one back of that in a NW3L allowance at 9 furlongs,  cruising to a 98 SP# from the back of the pack.  Union Rags urchin,  out of the sim mare Shes Got Curves (by Curlin) just missed in his previous outing in a NW3L allowance at a mile and an eighth,  crushing a 100 SP# with his usual late run.  Summerset protege has yet to compete on an off track,  should be motoring down the stretch again;  could be shooting to be the first ERC Triple Crown winner in three weeks.

FSS  GUNS  AND  HALOS                   KY     3F     mfmetropolitan     L Radzinski         6/1
.
Our second filly is this beautiful brown babe who faltered to a well beaten 7th last out in the Lrods Songbirds listed stakes at 10 furlongs,  getting an 84 SP# after chasing the early leader.  Scratch bred Gun Runner glider (by Halo) was a nice 3rd one back of that in the Tricky Squaw listed at 8.5 panels,  grabbing a 100 SP# from the middle of the pack.  In her previous start she was a gaining 2nd in the Kase Dismissed listed,  also at 8.5 furlongs,  garnering a 96 SP# from just off the early pace.  No experience yet over an off track;  looks to bounce back off poor effort last out for the mightyforego racing stables.

KYMARC  WALRUS  G                          NY     3F     dunnvilledowns     J Hernandez          24/1

The third of our four fillies is this bashful bay beauty,  who comes off a front running 2nd in an open allowance at 7.5 furlongs,  cashing an 83 SP# in a four horse field.  Golden Missile gal,  out of the sim mare Outback Walrus (by Giant’s Causeway) tired to 7th in the Burchell Hollandie listed stakes at a mile and aqn eighth in her prior run,  catching an 82 SP# prompting the early pace.  One back of that she wired an open allowance at 8.25 panels,  copping a 90 SP# in another four horse field.  Looks like she’ll be part of the early pace scrum,  won her only start on a sloppy track,  but will need to improve to outrun her 24/1 odds.  Says owner/trainer dunnvilledowns:  “I am excited to have the sister of KYMARB WALRUS,  the 3rd place finisher in the 2018 ERC Derby and ERC Belmont,  in this years ERC Preakness.  She has performed fairly well to date and I am hoping she will follow in her sisters footsteps and break out in this big race. ”

.
Bandbox bounder,  out of the sim mare Is The Key (by Dynasty-SAF) improved sharply smoking an open maiden at this distance in his latest try,  drilling a 97 SP# after leading throughout.  Gregarious light grey gelding was an OK 3rd one before that in a NW4x allowance at a mile over a sloppy surface,  drawing a 78 SP# after setting the early fractions.  He finished off 2018 with a pace pressing 3rd in a NW1x allowance sprint at 5 panels,  dropping a 71 SP# first off “the cut”.  Should be prominent early,  but faces like minded foes here;  steps way up in class,  the handicapper doesn’t treat him kindly at 28/1 on the morning line for the newfydowns barn.

BLOW UP THE MOON                          TX     3M     aam2             D Givins         6/1
.
The other half of the donbetonme entry is this burly bay colt,  who exits a victory in a NW4x allowance at 8.25 furlongs,  hammering a 97 SP# after stalking the early pace setters.  Lunarpal lad,  out of the sim mare Explosive Nerf (by Speightstown),  was an even 6th one back of that in the Primetime Lyphard listed stakes at 6.5 panels,  hanging a 92 SP#.  In his previous outing he made little impact when 8th in the Danzig With Sal listed at a mile and a sixteenth,  working out a 98 SP# in a quickly run affair.  Outfit has made a number of outstanding claims;  this one was grabbed for $50,000 out of his debut;  has been knocking heads with some tough fields,  handicapper likes his chances as the co-third choice at 6/1 on the morning line.

CUTITOUTWOMAN                                 KY     3F     jbcri24             T Ace             16/1
.
Our final filly is this Caleb’s Posse cutie,  based on the stakes winning,  half million dollar earning sim he-mare Motorcycle Boy (by Cool Coal Man),  who was 3rd first time out for the jbcri09 racing operation in an open allowance at 8.25 furlongs on the turf,  lashing an 88 SP# after making the early pace.  Blushing bay filly was 9th one before that in the G1 Vermont Is 4 Lovers at 9 panels,  lucking into a 92 SP# after showing some early interest.  In her prior start she tired to 7th in the Pico Pequeno listed stakes at this route,  landing a 79 SP#.  She won a G2 at 9 furlongs,  and won her only try over an off track,  both at age 2;  does have the turf to dirt angle going for her,  could surprise at 18/1 odds if she recaptures that two year old form.

.
The other half of the jbcri09 entry seeks a third straight score after a stalking win in a restricted $15,000 claimer at 8.25 furlongs,  flinging a 90 SP# in a four horse affair.  El Roca runner,  out of the sim mare Brilliant Lemon (by Teofilo) wired a restricted $75,000 claimer one back of that,  also at 8.25 furlongs,  flipping an 89 SP# in another four horse field.  In his previous run he was 2nd best in a restricted $50,000 claimer at 7.5 panels,  floating an 82 SP# prompting the early pace,  in,  yes,  a four horse race.  The speedy half of the classic speed/closer entry should be in the early pace scenario;  has not raced over an off track,  unlikely to be involved in the picture at the wire.

Club co-founder amir1607 sends out this burly bay colt off a tenacious 2nd in a NW2L allowance at 7.5 furlongs,  ripping a 95 SP# after an early pace duel.  National Defense nipper,  out of the sim mare Rockin The Summer (by Fastnet Rock) was 2nd best one back of that in a hot race allowance at 7 panels,  rocking an 85 SP#  after making all the early pace.  He was 2nd in a restricted allowance at 7 furlongs on the green,  rambling to a 79 SP# after another fight on the front end.  Stretches well out here,  has never raced over an off track;  another who will be involved in the early pace battle,  handicapper doesn’t hold him in high regard at 20/1 on the morning line.

.
Light grey colt comes off a fast closing 4th in the G3 Barbara Walters Special at a mile,  scalding a 101 SP# from the rear of a full field.  Son of Skipshot,  out of the sim mare Kronosaurus (by Fusaichi Pegasus),  got underway too late to have any impact in prior outing when 11th in the G2 Happy St Patricks Day at 7 panels,  sticking a 93 SP# while always at the back of the pack.  One before that he got up for the win in the Remember Morgado listed stakes at 6.5 furlongs,  slashing a 91 SP#  in a five horse affair.  Runner from the larrcamp racing stables should appreciate the extra distance here and gets a contested pace to close into;  handicapper doesn’t dismiss his chances at 8/1 on the morning line.

LIVE  UR  LIFE                                              FR     3M     mummerdowns     W Kewmwa         34/1
.
Protecting the rear guard out of the paddock is the other part of the newfydowns entry,  who exits a front running score in a restricted allowance at a mile and a sixteenth on the weeds,  throwing an 88 SP# in a facile victory.  Almanzor athlete,  out of the sim mare All Eyes On Sarra (by Pulpit),  tired to 5th in his prior start in a restricted maiden at 9 furlongs,  also on the grass,  tacking an 83 SP# after making the early fractions.  Big bay colt faltered to 8th one back of that in a restricted allowance at a mile on grass,  tabbing a 73 SP# .  Recent maiden winner looks outclassed in this group,  but could play a part in the early stages of the race;  handicapper holds him as the longest shot on the board at 34/1 odds.

  1. Congratulations to jb and connections – the fillies do it again in an ERC stakes, taking four of the top five finishing slots.

UNION SPORTS may have bounced off big Derby effort, should make some noise the rest of the year.

See ya in 3 weeks for the Belmont, and 2yos in California.
