GRADE 1 – THE COSMOPOLITAN HANDICAP

A full field of 14 high quality runners will be in the simulated starting gates for the G1 Cosmopolitan Handicap here in New York.  The race will be contested over the distance of One Mile (8 furlongs) or 1600 meters for the metric crowd on a Fast Dirt track.  This race is restricted to 3 year olds and older.

We have 14 different sires in the field, but A.P. INDY appears in 4 of the pedigrees in this group.  Vyz will give a leg up to a pair of riders wearing their silks against a field of some of the sim’s top trainers.  We have 9 graded stakes winners and 4 horses that have already earned their million dollar badge.  The field is evenly split between mare breds and scratch breds with 7 each, but it is dominated by Kentucky breds with 12 runners and 1 each from Ireland and Great Britain.

SPEED is the one thing that all these horses have in common.  Every entrant has a career best SP# of 114 or higher and Seven of them have SP’s at 120 or more.  A ton of early speed horses should provide us with an all out rush for the lead, which could then open the door for one of the stalkers or closers to take the win.

A LOOK AT THE POST PARADE:

1

JUST BET THE FARM

12-1 cocoabeach 15-6-2-2
SPEIGHTSTOWN x DEPUTY MINISTER x MISWAKI

4 year old Kentucky scratch bred does not have a win at the stakes level, but has 3 ITM finishes at the graded level.  Last time out in the G2 Mansur Leroys Handicap came home second while put up a blistering 121 SP#.  S. Chestnut has 2 previous rides both were ITM finishes in graded races.  Hard to ignore the big SP number from last race, could figure in the mix here.

2

LEFT FOR LATER

13-1 gowans 15-5-3-0
TIZNOW x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x DISTORTED HUMOR

4 year old Kentucky bred is out of the graded stakes winning mare LEFT ALONE.  D. Givins has graded 1 ITM finish in 2 prior mounts.  Both of his starts this year have been at the allowance level, with the last being a win in a NW5L posting a sweltering 121 SP#.  Winner of the G2 Trial By Night Stakes last June.  Does his best work when challenging the early lead.  Wouldn’t shock to be involved late.

3

FINKE SUZUKI

8-1 vyz 19-6-7-0
PIONEEROF THE NILE x MEDAGLIA D’ORO x SEEKING THE GOLD

A. Scott has been in the saddle 5 previous times with a win and 2 other ITM finishes on this 5 year old Kentucky bred produced by the stakes placed mare OUTBACK SUZUKI.  Last out was second in the G3 Razorback Cup while kicking a 119 SP#.  Both starts this year were 8.5 f graded races.  The first vyz entry is a true front end speedster but has yet to get it done at the graded level.

4

HOLD THE DOOR

12-1 cadet 22-7-5-3
MEDAGLIA D’ORO x A.P. INDY x ALYDAR

5 year old Kentucky scratch bred.  Has never been more than ¼ length out of the lead at the first call.  A. Jolly has 1 prior ride a win at the allowance level. He went gate to wire last race in the G3 Chester West Handicap popping a 117 SP#.  All 3 races this year have been dirt miles and ITM finishes.  He is on a nice little roll now and I wouldn’t count on it ending here.

5

SHAMANDA JANE

26-1 lindsypark 12-4-1-2
SHAMARDAL x SADLER’S WELLS x GULCH

The handicapper has made this 4 year old Irish bred the longest shot on the ML odds.  He was produced out of the Hall Of Fame mare AMANDA JANE.  Has the least experience with only 12 starts in the field.  C. Wyatt will be in the irons for the first time.  Last out had a stalking win in the G3 Fus Gonner Handicap with a 117 SP# with a stalking trip in his only graded race.  Good exotic play.

6

TAKODANA

7-1 lenny271 16-9-2-1
WAR FRONT x SEEKING THE GOLD x AWESOME AGAIN

4 year old Kentucky scratch bred has 4 graded mile wins on his record and has a best SP# of 120 twice.  L. Radzinski has held his reins once before and that was in the G1 STERILE MILE victory.  This closer will be coming from off the pace as he has proven in his last 7 starts all graded dirt miles.  You just can’t look past this talented horse in this tough field.

7

WAR RESOLVE

7-1 mtk76 23-8-5-5
MAGICIAN x WAR FRONT x EMPIRE MAKER

The 5 year old Kentucky bred gelding is out of the stakes placed mare WARRING FACTIONS.  Had an off trip last out, which was preceded by a pair of front end graded wins.  Posted a best 121 SP# in the G3 Save A Buck last October.  This will be the first ride on him for M. Kelly.  Has had only 1 mile start in his last 13 races.  Will look to pull a rabbit out the hat in this one.

8

NO LO OLVIDES

11-1 ariannys 18-5-5-1
MACHO UNO x CARSON CITY x CARO

5 year old Kentucky scratch bred has made 4 graded starts with 1 ITM, last time out in the G2 Sand Castle Goldolphin Mile.  Closed out 2018 by winning last 2 starts including a Local Championship where he posted a 118 SP#.  J. Ledwith will be in the saddle for the first time.  Will be just off the early pace where he is most comfortable.  Looking to build on the trip to Dubai.

9

OUTBACK ALIAS

6-1 vyz 20-10-2-0
GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x BROAD BRUSH x MR. PROSPECTOR

The handicapper has made the 2nd vyz entry the ML favorite.  The 5 year old Kentucky scratch bred has made only 1 start so far this year, a win, in the G3 Winchester Cap, where he scorched a 121 SP# but his career best is a 122 SP# in a listed stakes last May.  M. Scott will be the 5th different Scott to ride him.  Has 3 graded mile wins and is the winningest horse in this field.

10

HELIANTHUS

14-1 dahmamas 14-5-4-1
CURLIN x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x A.P. INDY

This 4 year old Kentucky bred was foaled by the graded stakes winning mare AUTUMN BEAUTY.  N. Lawton will return to the irons will 2 prior rides including an allowance win.  All 3 starts this year have been graded including his 121 SP# victory in the G3 Razorback Cap.  Doesn’t look for the early lead but keeps them close.  Nice odds here could lead to a big payout for the bold gambler.

11

READY TO BANK CASH

10-1 redhill 14-7-3-1
MORE THAN READY x SMART STRIKE x A.P. INDY

4 year old Kentucky bred is out of the stakes placed mare MAKE SOME CASH.  His last 8 starts have all been dirt miles with 4 of them graded.  T. Ace will grab his reins for the first time here.  Has hit the board in all 3 starts this year all of which were graded, including kicking out a 119 SP# while running 2nd in the G3 Khartoum Challenge 1. He is primed, but is he ready for first graded victory?

12

WALLS I BUILT

7-1 bizalls 28-9-7-4
CONGRATS x HALO x DEPUTY MINISTER

The only 6 year old in the field is this Kentucky scratch bred gelding.  He has been 1st or 2nd at the First call in every dirt start.  Ran 3rd in his only start this year.  Finished 3rd in last year’s Cosmopolitan Handicap.  His last win was in the G2 Sand Castle Goldolphin Mile last March going gate to wire with a smoking 121 SP#.  The question is does he still have enough to run with the youngsters.

13

ZAP THAT REINDEER

10-1 lbailey 17-3-6-2
GHOSTZAPPER x STORM CAT x A.P. INDY

The 5 year old Kentucky scratch bred has the fewest wins (3) in this field, and none of them have been at the stakes level.  Both of his starts this year were graded but at slightly longer distances.  Has finished ITM in 3 of his 4 graded starts.  Last win was last January in an NW4x allowance.  Has a career best SP# of 116.  He likes the early lead but could be out of his reach in this company.

14

KING KAM SEPOY

16-1 stockswami 16-8-0-3
SEPOY x KING KAMEHAMEHA x DUBAWI (IRE)

4 year old Great Britain bred Turf specialist was produced by former EOY mare QUEEN KAM.  This deep closer has only made 4 dirt starts but won 2 of them and they have all been G1’s.  Won the Wooden Indian and the Eddie Haskell, where he put up a 114 SP# last year.  Also competed in the Bluegrass Derby (13th) and the Breeders Bowl Classic (8th) last year.  Could be worth a flyer here.

Good Luck to all the connections……………………JB3

  1. Great coverage again Joel

Appreciate the way you highlight the positives in every horse, and I was amused by the ‘fifth Scott’ reference

    Thank you

    • I always try to find something for every horse

It is easier to do with fields like this one

And of course I try and inject a little humor at times

Good Luck to your runners in the race

  2. Another nice preview JB
