GRADE 1 – BREEDERS BOWL GAME

A full field of 14 high quality ladies will be in the simulated starting gates for the G1 Breeders Bowl Game under the famed twin spires here in Kentucky.  The race will be contested over the distance of One Mile (8 furlongs) or 1600 meters for the metric crowd on a Firm Turf course.  This race is restricted to 3 year olds and older and is further restricted to Fillies and Mares only.

We have a field consisting of 6 English breds, 4 from Ireland, 3 from Kentucky and 1 from France.  4 scracth breds and 2 he-mare breds will join the 8 mare breds in the starting gate.  FRANKEL sired 2 of the ladies in the race, while mtk76 will give a leg up to a pair of the jockeys.

A LOOK AT THE POST PARADE:

1

LIGHTFOOT LEA

9-1 mtk76 22-6-4-4
ENGLISH CHANNEL x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x CAERLEON

5 year old Kentucky bred mare enters here off of winning both her starts this year, both were listed stakes.  This will be her first venture into the graded pool.  Set a personal best SP# of 113 in NW4L allowance last October.  Seems to have settled on a closing strategy of late.  The rail should not affect her race.  She is the first of 2 mtk76 entries and is out of the mare UNSURPASSABLE.

2

GO AHEAD AND TRY

12-1 steve555 15-7-2-3
FRANKEL(GB) x SEEKING THE GOLD x NORTHERN DANCER

5 year old English scratch bred will be making her graded stakes debut.  Comes in off of a win in gate to wire fashion where she tied her top SP# of 113.  Only twice in her career has she not been the leader at the first call.  Being close to the rail should improve her chances.  If she gets to the front, she may be hard to beat as she has shown the ability to hold on at longer distances.

3

FANNY CROSBY

7-1 tamure 22-5-5-7
REDOUTE’S CHOICE x A.P. INDY x NUREYEV

5 year old French bred is out of the stakes placed mare UNITAS MILLENIUM. Is a bit of an enigma to her figure race strategy.  Popped a 118 SP# winning the G1- Flight Mile but has not threatened the early lead since.  Last 8 starts have all been turf miles.  Has 7 graded starts on her resume (1-1-2).  J. Hughes had 1 prior ride and finished 5th.  Recent form says she will come from off the pace.

4

NIGHTCLIFF

9-1 vkstables 21-7-5-3
AUSTRALIA x SMART STRIKE x MEDAGLIA D’ORO

5 year old Irish bred took a step backwards last time out in her first graded start in almost 2 years.  When she is near the early lead, she gets the job done, only failing once to hit the board when in the top 3 at the first call.  She is out of the stakes placed mare POLAR STRIKE.  Kicked out her best SP# of 113 in a listed stakes win.  Could be a player in the stretch run.

5

SOPHIE’S GHOST

9-1 kingab 16-8-3-2
GHOSTZAPPER x HENRYTHENAVIGATOR x RAHY

4 year old Kentucky bred Filly will be making her first graded start.  Has 3 wins and a second in her last 4 outings and all were listed turf miles.  Set her best SP# at 115 in March.  Was produced by graded placed mare FIND SOPHIE.  She has shown little or no interest for the early lead, choosing to stalk or close.  Has finished in the money in 8 of her 10 turf races with 6 wins.

6

VT INVINCIBLE

6-1 foxon 18-9-3-1
INVINCIBLE SPIRIT(IRE) x SEEKING THE GOLD x SPECTACULAR BID

5 year old Irish bred has had only 1 start this year and finished 4th.  Won a Gold Medal in the 2018 EQUINICS while kicking out a 117 SP#.  J. Benisz has 1 prior ride a third last October.  The closer has made 9 straight graded starts including the last 7 all being G1’s.  She was produced out of the mare WITH HATS ON.  Can she shake off the rust and return to previous racing form?

7

EXCELLENT EFFECT

22-1 lbailey 19-4-5-4
EXCEED AND EXCEL x FALBRAV x HALO

5 year old Irish bred has been tabbed as the longest shot by the handicapper.  Comes in off a 2nd place effort on the poly track.  She is out of the graded placed mare FOR EFFECT.  Has ran 3 listed stakes with no results to show.  Closer won a NW4L allowance in February putting out a 105 SP#.  She has put up 3 wins in turf mile races.  Would be a major upset if she gets the job done here.

8

KAPPA KEY

11-1 fastnfirm 23-5-6-4
FRANKEL(GB) x NORTHERN METEOR x RAHY

5 year old English bred is based on the he-mare TATJAKAPARA a graded stakes winner.  4 weeks ago ran 7th in first graded start here in Kentucky.  Has went back and forth from turf to dirt several times in her career.  Will not challenge for the early lead.  Put up a 114 SP# winning a NW5L allowance in March.  Has 9 ITM results in 13 turf starts.  Your guess is as good as mine on this one.

9

MY LADY APPROACH

17-1 stockswami 15-5-4-2
NEW APPROACH(IRE) x NUREYEV x FORTY NINER

4 year old English scratch bred has made 2 graded starts this year both at 9 panels.  Picked up a graded win in February.  She has never been lower than 3rd at the first call.  Kicked out her best SP# of 110 last October but faded to 4th with R. Bokie in the irons.  Has hit the board in 4 out of 8 graded attempts.  We know she likes to be out front, but can she get there in this field?

10

FLYING SQUIRREL

9-1 kingdamo 16-7-1-3
DANSILI(GB) x KINGMAMBO x DEPUTY MINISTER

The lone 6 year old is this English bred based on the stakes winning he-mare KING ISLAND.  Last time out this deep closer pulled off a graded victory tying her best SP# of 112 in her only race this year.  Picked up 3 listed stakes wins last year all over 7 furlongs.  Making only 2nd start at the mile distance, but last 3 have all been longer.  They will have to watch out for her late run.

11

HAREM DREAMING

16-1 broohar 14-5-1-1
OASIS DREAM(GB) x MONTJEU x SEATTLE SLEW

4 year old English scratch bred will be making her first ever attempt at the mile distance.  She has 3 graded starts this year all at longer distances without being a factor in any of them.  This deep closer kicked out a 114 SP# winning the ASR Championship Day listed stakes over a field of 20.  Connections are hoping that the shorter distance with aid her late run.

12

GRANDMA’S GLOW

17-1 fishstix 13-3-5-1
AWTAAD(IRE) x ARAGORN x MAJESTIC LIGHT

4 year old Irish scratch bred will be looking for her first win since last May when she won the G3 Great Woman.  She competed in the 2018 EQUINICS.  R. Case has been in the saddle for 1 previous race finishing 7th.  Put up her best SP# of 109 in February in an open 75k allowance.  Has never been lower than 3rd at the first call.  Will take a big effort to get to the front and be able to hold on.

13

AS THE TIDE TURNS

8-1 jbcri09 17-8-4-2
FARHH x SEEKING THE GOLD x NIJINSKY 2ND

The 5 year old English bred has hit the board in 14 of her 17 career starts.  She is out of stakes placed mare DANCIN’ FOOL.  Last out was 2nd in the G3 Wilshire Boulevard only her 2nd graded race in a closing effort.  She seems to do her best work when stalking the early pace.  Put up her best SP# of 112 last July in a NW6L allowance from the 12 post.  I would put in in the final mix here.

14

GUINEAS TRIOMPHE

5-1 mtk76 21-6-4-4
GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x KINGMAMBO x NIJINSKY 2ND

5 year old Kentucky bred is the handicapper’s ML choice and has the outside post.  She is 1 of 5 graded winners produced by HOF and graded stakes winning mare GUINEAS TOAST.  She has a pair of graded turf mile wins.  Last time out the deep closer failed to rally.  Posted her career best 115 SP# last June.  Outside post should provide no difficulty and she should be alive in the stretch.

Good Luck to all the connections……………………JB3
