The Stars And Bars
Restrictions: 3 Year Olds and Older
Distance: 12 Furlongs
Surface: Firm Turf
Post Time: Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 2:00pm
Yesterday I had to head to Illinois on personal business for a meeting. After finishing up in the afternoon, I thought to myself, since I am here already in Illinois if there might be a nice race to examine while I am here. So I did some checking and sure enough I found one on the card for Saturday. The G3, The Stars and Bars is running so I thought I would just stay over in Illinois and go check this race out this morning. Looks like we have a nice field of eight colts and gelding that have entered to make the trip of 12 furlongs across what will be listed as Firm Turf for this outing. I went and took a look at the track and saw a few horses working and then headed over to the barns to see the entries for this race and speak with their owners and jockeys. The odds makers have set their morning line odds and post positions have been drawn. So let’s take a preview as to how they stake up for this running of The Stars and Bars here in Illinois.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Serve The Stars 2/1 michaelb M Grunhard
The owner of this colt sired by Frankel has put in the call to Ohio for jockey M Grunhard to take the mount. This colt is a prior SW badge holder having multiple Listed Stakes wins to his credit. But it seems with trying to complete at the Grade levels he is consistently met with hardship. On 04/20/2019 he won the Out In A Tan Stakes in Nebraska traveling 11.5 furlongs. But the ghost of past came to visit then once again on 05/25/2019 in the G1, The Grand Brazilian in Brazil going 12 furlongs where he missed the boards coming in a distant 5th in that race. The morning line makes him the favorite in this race, but he will have to shake off that ghost that has haunted him at the Graded level. He will take to the gates representing the All-Star Racing residency as he leaves from the first hole on the rail.
2. Dire Warning 5/2 gattaca F Mac
This 5 year old horse sired by Dubawi will take to the track as the second choice in the morning line. He is a million dollar baby and a prior G1 winner. He has had a little trouble in his last two outings. He has only been raced once so far this season and that was on 04/20/2019 in Kentucky in the G3, CEO Classic where he crossed the wire 6th and was over 12 lengths back. His owner calls in F Mac from Michigan to take the ride with his horse who will attempt to get him back on track to his winning ways. He likes to run close to the front in his best outing and will be trying to keep up with the early speed in this race as he too heads out to represent the All-Star Racing residency.
3. OG Glen Theatric 16/1 wyndaway9 J Caves
This colt sired by Gleneagles is known for running in some long races, but he took to the dirt in his last outing on 05/19/2019 in Maryland in the G2, Baltimore Special. He traveled 16 grueling furlongs and was found not to enjoy the surface when he took a nose dive in his sp rating and finished a very distant 7th when they crossed the wire. His owner brings him back to the turf for this race and calls in jockey, J Caves from Kentucky to take his horse around the turf. They will represent the Empire State Racing (ESR) residency come post time.
4. Cark Capricious 21/1 millview18 B Reimers
He has not hit the boards since November of last year, but his owner sends out his horse sired by Novellist to try and change that. He will be running a shorter distance than in prior four outings in hope for a change in performance. His owner picks up a local jockey to this track here in Illionis in B Reimers. They pair up to represent ESR residency but this jockey will have his hands full in trying to find an added spark out of this horse and get him to fire against this crowd.
5. The Never Lands 8/1 whoami1 P Johnson
Another million dollar baby in this group who was sired by Dutch Art is a prior G1 winner and looks to add to his trophy case here in Illinois. His last few outings at the Graded Stakes level have not been kind to him as he comes here seeking some redemption. His last outing came on 05/12/2019 when he went 12 furlongs in Italy in the G2, The Carlsbad Lessons Stakes where he showed up very late back in 12th at the wire. He will have a local jockey here in Illinois in P Johnson up on top to take the ride with him. He will be representing the East-West Connection (EWC) residency come post time for this race.
6. Frosted Trix 3/1 aalex311 R Maire
His owner puts in the call to Florida to get a familiar jockey to take to the irons in R Maire to ride with his Frosted gelding. This Roan gelding has had some nice runs in recent prior outing at the Listed Stakes level but found himself missing the boards in his last outing in California on 05/19/2019 in the G3, the Golden Bridge Stakes at a distance of 11 furlongs. He crossed the wire 5th in that race and was over 6 lengths back. This prior SW badge earner will look for some new bling to add to the trophy case as he goes out representing the Universal Racing Club.
7. Zablington 6/1 frontrunna D Agmara
This 6 year old Bay horse is a prior G2 winner and was sired by Harlington. He had a nice last outing when he picked up a win going gate to wire in New Jersey going 10 furlongs in a $34,100 NW1y Allowance race. He will pick up a local jockey here in Illinois in D Agmara to take the mount and ride him across this long turf track. His jockey may need to bring a heavy hand to try and look for some extra effort out of this horse to keep him in contention. A good snap of the whip could give spark to this horse here in Illinois on Saturday as they go out to gain support and represent the ESR residency.
8. Medicean Ransom 30/1 lightng106 N Wright
The odds makers show no favors to this Medicean colt as he breaks from the outside in this race. He will go off as the longest choice in the field. He has a history of Claiming races and did get up to hit the boards a couple of time in the past in some Listed Stakes races. I have concern that this race maybe just a little big for him to handle. He will have local jockey, N Wright up top for this race who will have a fist full of horse to try to get some extra out of to get him to contend when he heads to the track to represent the ESR residency.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
1. Dire Warning: Comes in well rested and looks hungry for a win.
2. Serve The Stars: Looks to shake that ghost that has plagued him at the Graded Level. He may just do it this time.
3. Frosted Trix: His last two races he has put up some nice looking speed ratings.
Tarton’s Long Shot
OG Glen Theatric going off at 16/1 looks like the safest choice for my exotic tickets in this race. He heads back to the turf for this race and with a good jockey that could make him pop for this race.
