MOVIELAND SHINY CUP

The California dirt track will host this Grade 1 event on Saturday June 22nd with the post time schedule for 3pm EST.  The race will cover the distance of One Mile and a Quarter or 10 furlongs.  It is restricted to 3 year olds and older and has attracted a very talented field, including a pair of EOY winners as well as 5 other graded stakes winners.

 1- NECROGIANT   (8-1)                                     stoners

4 year old scratch bred son of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, comes in here on a 3 race winning streak.  In fact, since being switched to the main surface has 11 straight top 2 finishes, most coming over this distance.  Popped a sweltering 121 SP# last out and draws the rail here in his first graded attempt.  I believe this speedy closer has the goods to get it done down the stretch.

2- BARBER OF BAYONNE   (26-1)                   baggio

The handicapper has installed the 4 year old scratch bred son of WILL TAKE CHARGE as the longest shot on the board.  Has won both of his last 2 outings over 10f.  Made 1 prior graded start last February finishing 9th.  Is the recent form surge enough for this mid pack runner to vault past graded company?  I feel he may be just a little short on top end speed in this one.

 3- MALRAUX   (16-1)                                        fernando

The 4 year old son of NYQUIST out of the stakes winning mare FOURTH SPICE FILLY won the G3 Colorado Sophomore Classic last July, but didn’t win again until last time out.  The closer will be hoping to shake off the inconsistency bug that has plagued him since his juvenile campaign.  Has yet to hit the board in a full field.  I think I will choose to spend my money elsewhere.

 4- CHECK ‘N BALANCES   (8-1)                        maxattack

The winningest horse in the field is the 6 year old son of WAR FRONT from the graded winning mare MAGNUM OF SAMARA.  The 9 time winner will be making his first ever graded start and has not won in 3 outings this year.  Has never won above the allowance level despite kicking a 119 SP# last out in a listed stakes caught finishing second.  Could possibly be a player here.

5- GOLD WAR FRONT   (12-1)                       stockswami

Former EOY winner is this 4 year old scratch bred son of WAR FRONT.  Comes in here having won both of his 2019 starts and both were G1’s.  The exceptional deep closer was the runner up in the 2018 Bluegrass Derby.  Has finished in the money in 7 out of 8 graded races with 5 victories.  One thing is for certain, despite the handicapper, they will have to account for him on Saturday.

6- CLAYHESTHEPOTTER   (11-1)                    willyam13

The 4 year old stalker is the son of CREATOR and is out of the graded winning mare WHAT IS OBEDIENCE.  Winner of the G1 California Handicap in February while putting up a 119 SP#.  Has finished in the money in both of his graded starts.  Has five straight top 2 finishes and 10 out his last 11.  A model of consistency which could bode well for him in this one.

 7- MR. SHAKEDOWN   (8-1)                           lenny271

This 4 year old is the offspring of MALIBU MOON and the stakes placed mare SHAMROCK SERIES.  Has made 4 prior graded starts with a pair of ITM finishes, but yet to pull off the victory in a stakes race.  In fact, his last win was back in a September allowance.  Has piled up a bunch of on the board finishes, so I guess you can’t completely count him out, he is a gamer.

8- CHRISTMAS FOR BODE   (11-1)                 beisbol

The 5 year old gelding is the scratch bred son of BODEMEISTER, has hit the board in his last 5 starts, including a third in the G2 Grey Fox to close out 2018.  Usually prefers stalking type runs but has come from mid pack as well.  Dropping back in distance here as last 6 have all been longer.  Recent form suggests to me that he has a chance to compete with this field.

9- MILTON THE MONSTER   (16-1)                  aggs

4 year old gelding is the product of ANY GIVEN SATURDAY and the graded placed mare DEPUTY SECRETARY.  The former EOY winner is a super fast front runner and was the winner of the 2018 New Yorker, but only has 1 win in an allowance race since.  Not quite sure what to make of his chances here, has he ran all the speed out of his legs?

10- OVER THE HUMP   (9-1)                            mtk76

4 year old gelding is the son of MSHAWISH and the graded placed mare I WANT YOUR SAX.  He has only failed to hit the tote board once in 10 starts since the surgery.  The early speed runner has 2 graded starts, including last out where he was 3rd in the G2 West Coaster.  Has made his living at these distances and shown the ability to hold on down the stretch run.

11- LONG FOR MONTANA   (11-1)                dkyoung

5 year old gelding is the son of LONHRO and is based on the he-mare COOKE CITY KID.  Enters here on a 2 race win streak, including last out in the G3 Peach State Classic.  Also has a G1 victory on his resume in the Muddy Waters Leg II.  He has not missed finishing in the money on the main track since the operation.  This stalker will sit right behind the lead.

12- EDENBRIDGE GLORY   (6-1)                     theduke88

The 4 year old son of DROSSELMEYER and EOY winning mare SWANSEA TRIUMPH has been tabbed by the handicapper as the ML favorite.  Will be making his first career start against graded company.  Has only failed to hit the cash one time in 15 races.  Comes in on a 2 race win streak.  He will not challenge for the early lead but has varied the distance off the pace.

13- RETREAT RIGHTS   (7-1)                            pointblank

He is a 5 year old scratch bred son of MALIBU MOON.  A multiple graded stakes winner, the last being the G1 Muddy Waters Leg III on an off track in December.  The deep closer has finished in the money in 2 out of his 3 starts this year both of which were graded.  Has shown the stamina to get it done at longer distances.

14- FRANKING MAMBO   (9-1)                       jacklad

4 year old offspring of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and the mare FRANKING THE SLEW.  A 2 time G2 winner that has made 5 graded starts this year and has 3 second place finishes all at slightly shorter distance.  He usually settles in around mid pack in the early fractions.  Not sure if stretching out is the right call, but the outside starting gate will not hamper his riding style.

Good Luck to All………………………JB3
