The Cultural Centre Cup

Grade 3

Track: Ontario

Restrictions: 3 Year Olds and Older

Distance: 8.5 Furlongs

Surface: Fast Turf

Purse: $150,000

Post Time: Saturday, July 20, 2019

I have headed up to Ontario which is also known as the “Yours To Discover” province in Canada.  And I have discovered what will be a nice day to be at the track for the running of The Cultural Centre Cup.  A Fast Dirt track awaits a full field of colts, horses and geldings on Saturday that will battle it out at a distance of 8.5 furlongs.  We have a couple of G2, million dollar horses gracing this field of fourteen.  Any horse crossing the wire first will be honored to put this win on their resume and get their picture taken in the winner’s circle.  The morning line odds are out by the hard working odds makers and the post positions have been drawn.  My walk around the barns and inspection of the track were done this morning and I just got done viewing the horses and speaking with their owners and jockeys.  So let us take a preview as to how they look for the running of The Cultural Centre Cup here in Ontario.

Horse/Odds                                          Owner                          Jockey

1.  Bont  12/1                                        goldsmith                    N Ambrose

This son of Bernardini is a nice looking Bay colt sired in Kentucky.  He has shown and proven he can win on both the dirt and turf surfaces.  His last few races have been on the dirt and he has run quite well in a couple of Listed Stakes recently.  His last outing was on 06/15/2019 in Kansas where he traveled 9 furlongs in the Tabasco Wavering Memorial.  He closed up shop nicely from over 6 lengths back at the third call to get up for a nice win with a 115 speed rating.  Jockey, N Ambrose from out of New Jersey gets asked to take the mount and they will be heading to the gate representing Comedy Central residency.

2.  Alex Is Cia  15/1                            dkstables23                  S Tate

This Bay colt sired by Afleet Alex got up for a nice Listed Stakes win in Florida on 04/14/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in the Fries and Coke Memorial with a nice 116 speed.  But he failed to bring that forward in his last trip to the track in the G3, The Day Of Memorial Handicap also held in Florida at the same distance on 05/19/2019.  He showed up way late at the wire back in 9th and over 11 lengths back.  This has not discouraged his owner as he comes here to Ontario for another Grade 3 attempt.  The owner will get jockey, S Take from out of West Virginia to fly in to take the ride with his colt here on Saturday.

3.  Ironclad Alliance  10/1              handshob14                 J Piotrowski

This 5 year old Bay horse sired by Invincible Spirit is an Irish bred that has been running here in the Americas Division during his career.  He has proven to be a winner on both dirt and turf.  As of recent his last four races have been on the dirt of which he has won three of his last four races.  In his last outing on 06/16/2019 he ran in a Listed Stakes in Wyoming at a distance of 8.5 furlongs in the Niner Ice Stakes where he closed from way back to hit the wire first in that race with an impressive 119 speed rating.  The call was made to Pennsylvania to secure jockey, J Piotrowski to ride up top as they take to the dirt representing the All-Stars Racing residency on Saturday.

4.  The Gold Factor  14/1                 flobarb2                       V Elliott

A small stable representing the Marilyn Corp residency will bring his Grey horse sired by The Factor here to Ontario on Saturday.  A Listed Stakes win has eluded him thus far in his career with his last attempt back in March of this year which was found to be very disappointing.  His owner dropped him in Class back to running Allowance races where he has fared much better.  His last outing was on 06/15/2019 in Pennsylvania at 8.5 furlongs in a $67,000 Allowance.  He was caught down the stretch and finished up 2nd at the wire 1 ½ lengths back.  Jockey, V Elliott from out of Maryland will be coming in to take the ride as they head to the gates here in Ontario.

5.  Medulla’s Orbit  14/1                  slotfather                      W McClendon

This Bay colt is sired by Orb and is out of G3 winning mare Medulla Oblongata.  He will be going out to see if he can match his mother’s accomplishments and pick up a G3 win of his own.  His last two races were at the Graded level but he failed to hit the boards in those attempts.  He last ran on 05/19/2019 in Florida in the G3, The Day Of Memorial Handicap where he came in 4th and was 2 ¾ lengths back at the wire.  Jockey, W McClendon from out of Vermont gets the call to take to the irons with this colt and will see if he can find that speed again that this horse showed back in February as he will need it against this field.  They will head to the gate representing the Empire State Racing (ESR) residency come post time.

6.  Mo Body Knows  18/1                 bmr010                         G Giant

This Brown colt sired by Uncle Mo got no love in the morning line as the odds makers make him the longest choice in the field.  But that could have been a little snub they made in haste.  Although the jockey choice is not one I am familiar with, this horse back on 04/21/2019 ran in Nebraska in the G3. Fus Gonner Handicap and did show he could run at the Graded level at this distance when he came in 2nd just ¾ lengths off at the wire.  His last outing was in a Listed Stakes, Seattles Pegasus Stakes he went a distance of 10 furlongs for the first time and he failed to fire traveling that far.  He steps down to what looks to be a better distance for him today as he comes out to the track to represent the Racing HQ residency.

7.  Wickedsenseofhumor  10/1      asrstar5                        B Scott

This 5 year old Bay horse is a scratch bred (DISTORTED HUMOR x DEPUTY MINISTER x DANZIG) who had been running a little off his game this season.  The owner put his million dollar horse into a $43,800 NW2n Allowance in his last outing in Pennsylvania on 06/04/2010.  He went gate to wire in that race and got the win by ¾ lengths.  Perhaps this confidence booster will get this horse back to the boards at the Graded level here in Ontario.  The owner makes the call to Massachusetts to secure jockey, B Scott to take the ride with his horse.  This is a familiar jockey to this horse, but their pairing up in the past has been rocky.  They will be headed to the track at post time to represent the All-Stars Racing residency.

8.  Seal Honor  14/1                           ianwhipkey                   J Ingram

This 4 year old Grey colt is sired by Medaglia D’oro who has ran fairly consistent in his fifteen career starts of which his owner has placed his horse to get on the boards in thirteen of those outings.  He will be taking a jump in Class here today and may need to find a little extra fire in his legs with jockey, J Ingram from out of Vermont.  In his last outing in Kentucky he went 8 furlongs in a $48,700 NW4x Allowance.  He was coming fast from way back picking off horses, but missed the wire first and came in 2nd by a head.

9.  River Razor  7/1                            rac5                              S Israel

The Elite Racing Club finds this resident member to bring his Grey horse sired by Mucho Uno here to Ontario.  He has raced in multiple Graded level races in the past and has picked up his GP badge along with a Listed Stakes win. His last trip to the track was on 06/18/2019 in Colorado in a $24,300 NW2y Allowance where he got up for the win after stalking the pace to hit the wire 1st by ¾ lengths with an impressive 117 speed rating.  He will definitely need to bring that speed with him as he heads back up in Class for this G3 event.  If he can do that you should see him contend in this field.

10. Altared States  8/1                      chibound2                    V Webb

This Brown gelding sired by Take Charge Indy found a previous G3 win in April when he ran a distance of 9 furlongs in Illinois in the Soupy Sails Classic with a nice 117 speed rating.  He has raced twice since that race and he has not been able to repeat that effort.  His last outing was on 06/22/2019 in a Listed Stakes race in West Virginia in the Taking Risks Mile.  He failed to fire for the second time in a row and showed up to the wire in 6th and was 5 lengths back.  They will be headed to the gate to represent the Great Plains Residency 2011 come post time here on Saturday.

11. Finally The One  7/1                    futurestar                     C Gerhke

This Brown horse is a scratch bred (AMERICAN PHAROAH x A.P. INDY x DEPUTY MINISTER) and is a G2 winner and the other million dollar horse in the field.  But he too will not be the favorite according to the odds makers.  He has had his struggles this season and has not been able to find the boards against Graded company.  However in his last outing on 06/18/2019 he threw down a nice 118 speed and got up for the win in Colorado in a $24,300 NW2y Allowance.  Perhaps that will give him the confidence as he steps back up in Class for this race.  He will have a familiar jockey in C Gerhke from Maryland up top for the ride with him.  They have paired up a couple of times together in the past but failed to hit the boards in those races.  They will take to the track here in Ontario representing the Pastures Of Green residency.

12. Cupid’s Angel  5/1                       dshock                         R Haffner

This Roan gelding sired by Dark Angel is an Irish bred and is out of the mare Cupid’s Companion who had produced several stakes winners in the past, but none that have been able to compete at the Graded level.  But her son will be the morning line favorite according to the odds makers for this race on Saturday.  He is on a Hot Streak with three wins in a row.  Two were Allowance races and the other was his last outing in Idaho in a Listed Stakes on 06/02/2019 in the Running For Jennah Dirt Mile where he beat up a full field of horses with a 123 speed and getting the win by 2 ½ lengths.  The odds makers are looking for him to bring that speed forward for this race with jockey, R Haffner taking the mount, a jockey of which I am not familiar and of which is not familiar to the gelding.  He looks to continue his winning ways as he too goes out to represent the ESR residency.

13. Flat Skunk LV  9/1                      zbiz0                            Z Ayya

The Bizalls master stables will be bringing two entries to the track here on Saturday.  This Bay gelding is sired by Flatter and has proven to be a prior G3 badge earner.  However this season he has failed to hit the boards at the Graded level.  His last outing came on 06/09/2019 going 8.5 furlongs in Vermont in a Listed Stakes, the Cecil I. Dirt Special.  He ran an impressive 119 speed in that race, but he came in 2nd and was 1 ½ lengths back.  But if you are going to lose a race you might as well lose to your stable mate of which Bizalls has also brought here to Ontario as his second entry in this event.  He contracts with jockey, Z Ayya from New York to come take the ride with his gelding and they will be heading to gate representing Hoosier Racing residency.

14. Maahes LV  10/1                          bizalls11                      T Kelly

This would be Bizalls master stables number two entry for this event.  This gelding by Pioneerof The Nile as stated ran his last race in Vermont on 06/09/2019 in going 8.5 furlongs in the Cecil I. Dirt Special where he beat his stable mate, Flat Skunk LV by 1 ½ lengths.  He had a much more favorable post position in that race coming out of the number 2 gate which better suits his running style as a front runner.  But he did throw down a nice 121 speed in that race and will need to bring that forward and work for him as he takes a bump up in Class to compete at the Graded level for the first time.  He will be having jockey, T Kelly taking the ride with him from out of Pennsylvania as they head to their far outside post to represent the Only Stayers residency.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Never mind my picks as it is all in fun and I rarely pick winners.  Hope you do better than I do for this race.

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Cupids’s Angel:  He deserves a shot to extend his winning streak and bring that speed forward as he moves up in Class

2.  Flat Skink LV: Hard choice between the two Bizalls entries, but I will go with this one due to the gate draw.

3.  Ironclad Alliance:  Had a nice last outing at same distance could get up if he can bring that speed forward.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Medulla’s Orbit:  He looks to aspire to and become a G3 winner like his mama.  At 14/1 he will get on my exotic tickets.  He will not surprise me if he hits the boards.
