Kyogle’s FINKE BERYLLIUM ($14.50) rose to No. 4 in the turf route division for fillies and mares with a hard-fought victory Sunday afternoon in the $750,000 Grade 1 Start-Up here in Deauville, France.

A mile specialist on turf, Finke Beryllium is very fast and often has things her own way on the front end. No so on Sunday.

Steve555′s GO AHEAD AND TRY outbroke Finke Beryllium and had her head in front early. The expected early pace battle developed into serious dimensions, with the top two furiously fighting for the front through blazing fractions of 22.6, 45.23 and 1:07.92.

When Finke Beryllium hit the wire in 1:33.35, she earned a new lifetime-best speed figure of 118. Her performance was outstanding, to overcome the other speed mare, kick on and win with the biggest number she ever got. This is a mare that has been through the wars. The Start Up was her sixth Grade 1 start, and her 11th graded start overall.

What’s more, she was asked twice to face Grade 1 males. That’s the only time this gal faded in the lane. When she faces fillies and mares, she is mega-tough. In our preview, we noted that three of the last five winners of the Grade 1 Start Up have gone on to win End of Year awards.

Might we see the same from Kyogle’s brilliant daughter of the South African sire Variety Club? Even before her score on Sunday, she already was the best Sim horse ever by her sire, and now she is even moreso. In four Grade 1 races against fillies and mares, Finke Beryllium has won two and hit the board in the other two.

Congratulations to Kyogle! What a tenacious mare she is.

Congratulations as well to Simhispanotr, whose DESPIADADA closed strongly to be a clear second. Steve555′s Go Ahead and Try held third with no problem, more than two lengths clear of PUNKIN TAPRAY in fourth. This was a race in which the front end ran the competition off their feet. The top three at the second call ended up third, first and fourth. Despiadada was the only closer to make a move, so her race stands out.

Cheers from sunny Deauville!

  1. You are welcome Kyogle and thanks for posting.

I really am a fan of Finke Beryllium. She is a tough one.

  2. Thanks Itch

I recall a time when recaps were a regular feature

It’s great to be the recipient of such a good one

I’m not holding my breath for EOY awards with her. She only has two more ‘ideal’ races this year, the first nine weeks away. At most it’s three more runs this year, and one will have to be outside her comfort zone.

Thanks again for the in-depth coverage
