Welcome to the spotlight race today here in Ohio, August 19, 2019. Today, local fillies take the stage trying to make their mark on the 3yr old class and get some much needed points toward local championship races. The morning line gives us two big favorites that could very well be a rivalry in the making. Cairo Illinois and Bucking Cat meet each other for the first time and are both looking for local stardom while some others want to see that duel up front in hopes to give them the upset chance in the late stages. It’s sure to be quick up front, can the others get involved? Only time will tell. Let’s get a closer look at the runners….
$30,000 Allowance (Local Restricted) (Post Time 12:30pm EST)
3yr Olds, Fillies only
8 Furlongs – Fast Dirt
(Baryshnikov x (Tiz King) Sidney’s Candy x Tiznow)
Stretches out to a mile in distance for the first time in this one. Finally getting the added distance she should want, as her mother was a stakes winner routing. Been heavily raced this year but coming off of her first rest and is possible to take a step forward given the conditions. Still must improve to have hope against the two big favorites. Upset minded!
(Lunar Echo x (Katzenjammer) Storm Cat x Gone West)
The most lightly raced of the bunch. 2 for 5 in the win column and only out of the money once. That being said, this will be her toughest test to date. Won last out going away over 6.5 furlongs right here back on 6/15. Speed figs actually dipped last out though. Dam was a stakes winning sprinter whose had a pretty good career producing talent. Goes the mile for the first time like her counterpart on the inside. Taking a wait and see approach.
(Added Edge x (Point Iroquois) Ghostzapper x Point Given)
Tries open locals for the third straight time and has held her own. Still eligible for NW2L conditions. SP’s have improved since switching back to the dirt but I’m still not sure this is her best surface. Mom was out of the money in both lifetime starts on dirt. Still, having run the distance gives her an edge over a few of the other longshots. Will make a late run looking for a piece.
(Louis Villain x (Cairo Prospector) Cairo Prince x Crafty Prospector)
Been absolutely solid running against local fillies here this year. Has 8 runs at a mile or better with 4 wins and 4 seconds. Tried the local sprinter boys last out to no avail, but still had a good showing. Back to where she belongs and is my pick in here! Has her regular rider. Look for her to show speed along with her biggest threat to her outside.
(Cowtown Cat x (Bucking Bronco) Wild Again x Damascus)
The morning line favorite comes in off of a 4 length wire to wire win going 7.5 furlongs here in Ohio. She has never been out of the money in 15 lifetime starts and has tallied 12 victories from them. Dam is a G3 winner, and has put out some very talented foals. Surprised she has never faced Cairo Illinois that’s to the inside before, so this might be a rivalry in the making. Has a bunch of speed also, and I anticipate whomever has enough gas left between the two of them will come out the victor.
(Twinspired x (Smart Ojai Ms.) Uncle Mo x Arch)
Jumping back and forth between surfaces is really never a good sign, but that’s what we have here from this mare with roots to Uncle Mo. Been competitive in the local claimers, with her most success running on the turf. Looking at the stat sheet, it doesn’t seem like she wants a mile either. Her mom was allowance winner and a straight sprinter. She’ll be up against it here with a dramatic improvement needed to even be in the picture at the end.
(Zimmer x (Urban Combat) Colonel John x A.P. Indy)
This heavily raced mare is another that doesn’t seem to have a feel as to what footing she wants either, same as her dam. In the money in 3 of 5 routing but hasn’t hit the winners circle doing so yet, and it probably wont be in this contest either. Likes to sit mid-pack and try to make one run to get her into contention. Would need a huge leap in SP’s to get her close, but could be around if the top two run themselves into the ground.
(Vaquero x (Sal Pulpit) Pulpit x Strike The Gold)
Trying the mile distance for the first time in her 13thrace of her career. Dam was best over the turf course, so I’m kinda wondering why this gal only has 1 run over that course. Still eligible for the NW2L conditions as well. Packs some speed but I don’t think she has enough to push the two favorites. Unfortunately, I see her backing up quickly after the half way point. I would love to see otherwise because nobody likes chalk 1-2, but she needs an enormous boost form the breeding gods to get it done.
