From Tokyo Racecourse in Fugu in Tokyo,  Japan,  the Elite Racing Club proudly presents the KING KAMEHAMEHA.  A field of nine older runners,  including a trio of upset minded distaffers,  will vie for the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse on tap.  The winning owner/trainer will also collect the lion’s share of the stakes bonus points the club awards in these affairs;  they ultimately determine a club champion at year’s end.  The winning connections will also be feted at the post race trophy presentation ceremonies,  which should be quite raucous if history is any guide.
.
The club has pulled out all the stops for this year’s Japanese visit.  Hopefully the fugu chef will be laying off the sake during our stay.  Tokyo Racecourse has been quite accommodating,  setting us up with a private tent with dedicated betting windows,  top shelf hooch and some friendly waitresses.
.
Eight months in the books,  and co-founder jbcri09 has grabbed the lead in the race to annual honors and future bragging rights.  Sitting in second is reigning champ harrylan,  while dontbetonme is a close 3rd,  with summerset and amir1605 rounding out the top 5 in the chase for the top prize.  And a big ERC welcome to new shooter, chino,  who makes his ERC stakes debut in this event.  Welcome and good luck,  chino.
.
Unfortunately,  the course has come up a bit wet for the race,  and should be listed as “good” come post time Saturday,  as the local weather prognosticators don’t see drying conditions on the horizon.  With that in mind let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see what the figures may reveal.

CARMELA  CORLEONE                            PA     5F     jb3offense         D Davis         27/1
.
Heading up the post parade is our first female,  the longest shot of the race at 27/1 odds.  Beautiful bay five year old mare stretches way out here off a series of so-so allowance efforts,  the latest an even 5th in a restricted allowance at 7.5 panels,  catching a 97 SP# while never a threat.  El Padrino empress,  out of the stakes winning sim mare Stormy Contender (by Stormy Atlantic),  was 5th one back of that in a NW3x allowance at three quarters of a mile,  casting a 79 SP# making little impact.  Her prior try was a fair 4th in a local bred allowance at 8.5 furlongs,  copping a 94 SP# as an also ran.  Makes her first stakes try here in her 37th start,  seems up against for the jb3offense barn.

CASSIO                                                              CAN     5G     eriedowns         B Van Houten         9/1
.
Big bay gelding exits a front running score in an open allowance at 11 furlongs,  zapping a 102 SP#.  In his previous start he settled for 2nd after getting the lead in an open allowance at 10.5 panels,  zipping a 96 SP# after an early pace duel.   One before that this Othello otter,  out of the stakes placed sim mare The Operative (by Mineshaft) he wound up 3rd after making all the early pace in an open allowance at 11 furlongs,  zinging a 103 SP#.  Front runner from the eriedowns barn of the dunnvilledowns group has gone 6-4-1-1 since being gelded;  should be involved in the pace scenarios,  but can he hold off the cavalry down the straight ?

MONSTRALIANO                                         IRE     4M     amir1641         W Mosebar         3/1
.
Buratino blazer,  out of the graded placed sim mare Australian Dancer (by Australia),  was a gaining 2nd last out in the Awesome Affair listed stakes at a mile and an eighth,  blasting a 111 SP# in a mid pack effort.  Bruising bay colt faded to 7th one back of that in the G3 The Texas Turf Cup,  also at 9 furlongs,  bagging a 107 SP# after a mid pack trip.  In his prior outing he was no match for the top ones in the G3 Jennifer Connley BC Turf Cap at 9 panels,  busting a 112 SP# in a quickly run contest.  Amir1641 trainee should be in the second flight down the back stretch,  can he go on with it as they come down the straight ?  Handicapper likes his chances as the  3/1 co-favorite on the morning line.

HULKENBURG                                                AUS     6G     murrayspond         P Kelly             11/1
.
Burly bay gelding has been in some rough going of late,  tiring to 6th last time over in a restricted allowance at 9.5 furlongs,  lucking into an 89 SP#.  Scratch bred Redoute’s Choice runner (by Dynaformer) lasted for 3rd one before that in another restricted allowance,  landing a 93 SP# after setting the early fractions.  His prior run was an even 3rd  in the same condition at 9.5 furlongs,  lashing a 101 SP#.  Runner from the murrayspond barn of the newfydowns operation does have a win on an off track,  but has not won a race in 12 starts in the last 18 months;  may be close to the early leaders,  but may find it difficult to hold off the late closers in the lane.

I’LL  TAKE  THE  DEAL                              IRE     5F     jbcri19             C Meads         5/1
.
Our second female is this bodacious bay five year old mare,  who backed up to 4th at this distance in her latest try in a NW6L allowance,  dropping a 103 SP# after a race long pace duel.  Fastnet Rock femme,  based on the sim he-mare Major Deal (by Daiwa Major) tired to 6th one back of that in a restricted allowance at 9.5 panels,  drawing a 97 SP# after again facing a front end battle.  She won a NW4L allowance at this trip in her prior start,  drilling a 108 SP# in a stalking effort.  Speedster from the jbcri19 stable should be vying for the early lead;  can she shake loose and hold off the deep closers is the question.

GALILEO  LYPH                                             IRE     5M     harrylanexp7         R Gong            4/1
.
Reigning club champ harrylan saddles this scratch bred Galileo guy (by Lyphard) off a closing 2nd in a restricted allowance at this route, crunching a 109 SP# in a mid pack trip.  Burly bay five year old horse was an OK 4th one back of that in an open allowance at 10.5 furlongs,  cashing a 101 SP# from the back of the pack.  In his previous outing he won a NW4L allowance at this distance,  crushing a 113 SP# while closer to the early pace.  Sufficient early speed in this affair to set up this guy’s late kick – watch for the third choice coming late down the straight.  He does have a win and a 2nd in three off track tries.

JUST  A  JUMPER                                         JPN     4F     dontbetonme         Y Yang             5/1
.
Blushing bay filly tries to repeat her upset of the boys in the July ERC event,  Dynaformer,  at a mile,  popping a 109 SP# in a stalking effort.  Just A Way jewel,  out of the sim mare Minejumper (by North Light),  was 2nd best against her own kind at a mile in a NW4L allowance in her prior start,  punching a 109 SP# in a mid pack trip.  One before that she just missed when 2nd in the same condition at 8.5 panels,  pounding a 110 SP# from the middle of the pack.  Handicapper likes her chances at 5/1 on the morning line;  the dontbetonme barn regularly pulls off these upsets;  can do it again.

SPIRITUAL  KRIS                                           FR     5M     summerset8         J Whaley         3/1
.
Our other co-favorite is this G2 winning stretch runner,  who comes off a fast closing 2nd in a Local Championship Stakes at 9.5 furlongs,  sizzling a 110 SP# from way back in the pack.  Scratch bred Charm Spirit clipper (by Zabeel) ran out of track one back of that in a restricted allowance at a mile and an eighth,  stashing a 108 SP# from well back early.  One before that he won a local bred allowance at 9 panels,  getting up late for a scalding 111 SP#.  Brutish bay five year old has hit the board in both off track starts,  and gets a favorable pace scenario;  should be prominent in the stretch call for the summerset racing group.

HARD  MERCHANDISE I                         ENG     6M     breedersden         A Hudson         22/1
.
Watching them all leave the saddling area is this bucking bay six year old horse,  who was a distant 3rd in an open allowance at 11 panels last time over,  floating an 89 SP# over an off track.  Nathaniel nipper,  out of the sim mare Moments To Cry (by Montjeu),  tired badly to 6th in a two mile marathon local bred affair one before that,  flipping a 79 SP# after chasing the early pace.  He was  a tiring 9th in his previous run at this route in the G3 Awa Pooie Gold Cup,  flinging a 101 SP# while ambitiously placed.  His last win was at this distance;  will need to reverse recent dull form for new club member chino to win first out.

Good luck everybody,  and may they all come home fast,  safe and sound.

  1. Congratulations to summerset and connections on a powerful performance – y’all blocked JB’s horse well but forgot to block summer’s. Nice effort from Amir’s runner for the place. Congrats on winner #5,000 also, Mike. . .

See everybody next month in Florida for older horses on the dirt.

  2. Congrats summerset! Your horse was much the best!

  3. Thanks ric for another stellar write up! I agree with summerset that everyone should block jb’s horse. Then let’s block summerset’s horse and blame it all on the track conditions. lol

  4. Once again Ric, Great Job. Everybody, block Jb’s horse, lol.

  5. Enjoyable article Ric, thanks for your coverage. Good luck guys!

  6. Thank you Ric, good luck to everybody.
