A full field of fourteen three year olds will head to the gates on Sunday going a distance of 7 furlongs across a Fast Dirt track. This is a nice field of horses of which many will be trying to get that first Graded win on their résumés. The morning line odds are set and post positions drawn. Let us take a preview of the field running in The Select Bud Stakes.
Horse/Odds Sire Owner Jockey
1. AP’s Golden Mummy 10/1 American Pharoah thechallenge2 L Ingersoll
He is a scratch bred colt that is coming into this race after three straight wins with his last trip to the track a Listed Stakes win in Florida going 5.5 furlongs in the Whatsmyname Dirt Sprint. Consistent speeds as he goes out to make it four wins in a row.
2. Flag The Gold 16/1 Laoban nybredtrot R Pollard
This colt has mainly raced in Local and Residency races in his thirteen career starts. He stepped out on 08/24/2019 to run in the G1, Prince’s Knight Stakes in New York of which he was met with a disappointing trip. The step down in Class could be to this horses favor.
3. Might And Thunder 7/1 Chivalrous dkyoung10 R Coleman
He will be getting a fast dirt track on Sunday that appears to be his preference. He picked up a G2 win in July in The Everything’s Legal Stakes in New York. His last trip to the track was a disappointing run in the G1, The Foregone in New Your where he showed up over six lengths back. A step down in Class and a fast track could help him.
4. Mountain Chrome 10/1 California Chrome sunline L Dorchak
He was the runner up in the G2, The Everything’s Legal Stakes to Might And Thunder. But he stepped down to a $75,000 Allowance race in his last outing and began to fall back after the second call, but he did hold on to place third in that race over three lengths back. He needs to rebound after that last trip to the track.
5. Henty Astatine 12/1 Nyquist aussie A Scott
This colt is coming into this race after winning a Listed Stakes, Pal Listen Dirt Special. He best the field that day in California with a respectable 111 speed rating. He will need to bring that forward with him as he moves up in Class here in Kentucky. He will get a somewhat familiar jockey up top for this trip.
6. Dream Magic Dunn 9/1 Lonhro bignutz K Naber
This colt was racing on the turf with some success in longer distance races. He made the switch to dirt in July of this year and has shown some success as well, but at shorter distances under 8 furlongs. He last ran on an off track in India at 7.5 furlongs in the Listed Stakes, Skanonymous Dirt Dash where he was second in that race and was closing fast but missed by a ½ length. He is still looking for his first Stakes win and he will have to do it after a long travel here to Kentucky.
7. Moonlite Run 10/1 Dortmund chillingfarms3 F Mac
This former Bluegrass Derby contender has moved back down to shorter distances. He came back to the track in July and raced again in August. Both races were $48,700 NW3L Allowance races. His last trip to the tracked granted him a win what came in California. He steps back up to Graded company for the first time since the Derby and looks to get back on track with a win here in Kentucky.
8. Two Sawbucks 15/1 Union Jack katiesfarm D Zordich
This colt has shown inconsistency in his races and speed ratings. We will have to see how he will perform on Sunday. He has raced well on some off tracks in the past, but he will not get that here in Kentucky. He is coming off a second place finish in New York in a $48,700 Local NW1n Allowance where he ran fairly flat.
9. Strikefromronaldo 8/1 Shaman Ghost theoc3 G Lambert
In his last race in New York on 08/24/2019 he ran in the G1, Prince’s Knight Stakes where he showed up a nice second place after making a strong closing attempt after the third call. An unfamiliar jockey to this horse gets the call. Look for this horse to close late coming for home.
10. Ustherydes 9/2 Distorted Humor supapogs9 C Capper
He too ran in the G1, Prince’s Knight Stakes but the best he could do that day was to show up in 5th and was over 3 lengths back at the wire. He grabs the attention of the odds makers today as they make him their morning line favorite. He goes out to try and not disappoint.
11. Is This America 15/1 Unbridled America icantbreathe F Leghorn
He continues to look for his first Stakes win that has thus far eluded him in his 17 career starts. He has been running mainly on the Local circuit lately and moves out to take his shot at a Graded run. He will have much to prove in this race to contend against this field. But with a good jockey taking the ride with him, this could improve his chances.
12. Hemp’s Dinero 8/1 Liam’s Map boudin2 H McCoy
This G2 badge earner last ran on an off track on 08/24/2019 in the G1, Prince’s Knight Stakes in New York. This horse likes to run up front, but he lost his lead late to hang on to place 3rd in that race with a respectable 112 speed rating. We will have to see how he performs from this post position draw.
13. Birsting 29/1 Stay Thirsty deeprock8 C Thunell
He has four straight Allowance wins on the poly surface and returns to the dirt for the first time since April of this year. He gets no love for Sunday’s race from the odds makers as they make him their longest choice in the field in their morning line. He will have to prove he can transition back successfully in this race from what appears to be an unfavorable post for his running style.
14. Furrycrossdamersey 10/1 Lord Of England pilots32 N Bonus
This G2 badge earner will come from the outside post of which there is concern. He won the G2, Happy St. Patricks Day. Nice speed ratings for this horse and he won his last outing in a Listed Stakes on 07/26/2019 in the Mr. Prospect Dirt Sprint in New York. With a good jockey up top this will help as he tries to overcome this post position draw.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
Strikefronronaldo: Coming off a good last outing in a G1 race. The step down in Class looks good for him.
Hemp’s Dinero: The post position is a concern, but if he gets a good jump out of the gate and a clean trip he could be in the mix.
Ustherydes: Could surprise as he takes a step down in Class. Will need a good break from the gate and get into a comfortable position.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Moonlite Run: This 10/1 choice is coming back to the Graded level for the first time since the Bluegrass Derby. He deserves a spot on some exotic tickets at the betting window.
