The race was just long enough for MIESQUE'S GOLD as she finished one stride ahead of hard charging HIGH MOTIONS to win the Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly race here at Monmouth Park yesterday. There were actually a lot of future hopes and dreams both raised and shattered during the running of the 2007 Breeders Bowl race for fillies. None so brightly as MIESQUE'S GOLD though. This pretty light grey filly ran her best race at just the right time. That, of course is a huge credit to trainer DaBears of the Smokeglack Stables and as well to jockey K.Ledwith. The MIESQUE’S APPROVAL out of broodmare BRIDE’S SONG filly showed that she was more than ready for the big time. She was brought along slowly as this was only her fifth race and only her second Stakes but she came in with a big race at the FILLY GRAND PRIX where she had finished second in a quality field. She has never finished worse than third in any of her races and has improved every time out capped by her 94 SPF in this race. She was just 1/5 off of the Stakes record held by DANCING BLADE. I warned you about this filly in my preview stating that Ledwith’s gaudy win percentage would certainly help her out here. She increased her earnings to just under three quarters of a million dollars and improved to the number one ranking in turf for all the longer distances.
I caught up to trainer DaBears in the stables last week and asked him about his filly and his thoughts. Here is what he told me, “When I first bred her, I didn't expect too much, with an unproven sire. Her two bottom sides suggest however, and her mom liked turf. So I decided to try a turf angle. Her MSW race, she broke last and was last through two furlongs in a 4 1/2 race. She came on to get third while closing hard .Next start she went a half furlong more and closed to win it by a length and a quarter. The third start was a mistake, which wound up being a blessing. I mistakenly entered her in A NW2L against colts. She wound up finishing second to a colt who is #1 ranked in the turf division (males). When I entered her in the Grade I Filly Grand Prix, he had just come in third in a Grade I with colts the week before. So I said to myself "if she's that good to run second to him, she should be competitive against her own sex." So I put her in the Grade I. I really believe that she's going to be lazy in the beginning and make a solid run for the board. She is sharp, and may the best horse win.” It sounds like he hit it spot on as that is just what happened in the race, but she not only hit the board but won the thing outright.
There was also an incredibly courageous race run by HIGH MOTIONS, who finished second. The HIGH CHAPARRAL filly started out near the back of the pack but closed furiously down the stretch and needed a couple more yards of real estate to beat the winner. Once again as in every previous JUVY FILLY TURF race at the BB, the morning line favorite did not win the race and in this case, FLOWERATS actually finished a disappointing 10th more than eleven lengths back. There was plenty of early speed in the race and at the half way point there were eight horses within three of the lead.
There were some other hearts broken in this race as well. BLUEGRASS RACER, FAST ‘N’ LOOSE and WATCH YOUR BACK were all highly thought of but didn’t seem to have it on this day. They may change that down the road. These horses are well bred with lots of heart and will be back to win again.
Sometime late tomorrow, after two days of parties have finally wound down and he has gotten a couple of hours of sleep, MIESQUE'S GOLD ’s trainer DaBears will finally realize the enormity of what has happened and the planning and responsibility of taking a Superstar filly to the next couple of races. He will also plan on being at a certain track in Kentucky come May. Best of luck to all of these fine two year olds.
Good luck to all runners!
