Fastnfirm's Weird World of Sires: No Love in 2007
by fastnfirm on Tuesday, February 05, 2008 at 12:41:46 AM

Forgotten Sires Wait for Your Call

These sires didn’t get no love in 2007… actually, most of them have been waiting for a mare to call for much longer.  So swing by their stud farms and give these lonely boys some play.

EULOGIZE (#1984)

This sire, born in 1986, is a rare bird: a son of Roberto still available as a sire.  He stands in Louisiana and is due to end his stud career this sim season, so get your mares in.  He has not been used as a sire since 2001!  He’s had over 70% winners among his sim progeny, although none of them all that fast.  They have leaned toward route races, and are somewhat more successful on dirt.  He’s done nothing as a broodmare sire, but has only two such foals.  Along with the Roberto side, he’s got some Damascus and long-winded Sea-Bird on the bottom side of the pedigree.  Real-life Eulogize won four races and has one stakeswinner, Maximum Advance.

LATIN REIGN (#14120)

With solid bloodlines, this sire has a chance to be more than his otherwise minor race record and stud record would indicate.  He’s by El Gran Senor out of an Exclusive Native mare.  His female family includes American and Argentinian Grade 1 winner Lovellon and last year Derby trail performer Notional.  He managed a second in a Group 2 in Italy, but there is nothing else notable in his race record.  He has three runners and one winner in real life, and two runners and one winner in the sim (both from 2003, and both retired).  Sim winner GEAR BEEHIVES was decent as a sprinter, but LATIN REIGN’s sirelines are versatile with distance, so try him with various types of damsires.  He stands in Indiana (real life fee: $1,500).

L-WAY WIN (#11015)

The Japanese two-year-old champion of 1992 didn’t really impress in later years of racing.  By Caerleon (think useful sire Generous) out of a Rusticaro mare, he would appear to lean turf.  Rusticaro is a son of Caro, who shows up in the pedigrees of Unbridled’s Song, Maria’s Mon, Red Bullet, Cozzene, and With Approval.  That list sure makes it look like you should be expecting a route of ground, possibly on either surface.  His few real-life Japanese progeny don’t provide a clue, and his only two sim progeny (one in 2001 and one in 2004) didn’t win.  He’d be interesting as a bargain sire with some broodmare sires from the Northern Dancer wing.  And, of course, to Broncos fans.

MEGAS VUKEFALOS (#9654)

Admit it, you like the wacky name.  This Canadian product won or placed in several stakes, banked over $800k, and stands north of the border for $6,000 Canadian (what’s that now, $10,000 American???).  He’s a son of Cool Victor, sire of two Canadian champions, out of a mare by obscure Dom Alaric.  In real life, he’s got two nice winners from limited foals.  In the sim, there are winners VOLUPTUOUS CLUB and COUNTRY MODE, but he hasn’t been used since 2002.  Most of Cool Victor’s best products did their biggest damage sprinting on dirt, so there’s somewhere to start with this sire.  There’s some Intentionally and Nearctic in MEGAS VUKEFALOS’s pedigree, so avoid or linebreed to In Reality and Northern Dancer line sires as is your preference.

JACK WILSON (#3105)

He has been successful in real life as a sire of New Mexico-breds, including Romeos Wilson and Ninety Nine Jack, but now stands in Oklahoma for $2k.  The son of Encino won only a minor stakes in the Land of Enchantment, but his dam produced graded winner Penny’s Reshoot; graded winners Chace City and Smooth Air also show up among her descendents.  His sim progeny include decent AEGON'S DANGER, unlucky maiden EIGHT METER, and stakes-placed MANGO CLAM.  There’s not much but Northern Dancer and Hail to Reason in the 4th generation to complicate your breedings to this guy.
