Seeking A Bargain

First Year Sires On A Budget

I thought I would do something different and have some fun reviewing some first year sires. My theory was that some people may not have a lot of knowledge on some of the first year sires. I wanted to focus on sires that could be had cheaply most weeks (under 150). I also thought it would be fun to give some props to some of the two year olds that otherwise probably wouldn’t get mentioned. After all everyone enjoys a surprise mention of their horse in BTB!

Some of the numbers may not seem so good on these horses, but you can find solid value if you throw them at a good mare. Consider also that it is early in the year, so percentage of winners should go up. If you look at these horses by comparison to say Street Sense who cost a great deal more to breed, you see that they have done well by comparison thus far. So if you’re looking for a bargain sire to breed to a nice mare consider one of these following options at the end of the week.

STEVIE WONDERBOY (Stephen Got Even x Summer Squall x A.P. Indy)

Accomplishments: Won grade 1 Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at a mile and 1/16. In six lifetime starts won three, had two seconds, and one show finish. This Eclipse Champion has over 1 million in lifetime earnings.

In the Sim: Already has 21% winners from 19 runners. 92% of its earnings have come on dirt. Has some nice looking prospects in the sim out of Thunder Gulch, Came Home, Woodman, and Rahy. You can use Stevie for under 140 BP’s later in the week, and that isn’t bad for a first year sire with his credentials. Now is as good time as ever to use Stevie Wonderboy.

SUNRIVER (Saint Ballado x Mari’s Brook x Halo)

Accomplishments: Won the Peter Pan Stakes at 1 1/8 mile at three. Also, finished third at Belmont Stakes. Finished ITM in 12 of 17 career starts with $816,414 lifetime earnings.

In the Sim: Has 20 runners with 4 winners, 90% earnings on dirt thus far. Has a nice prospect from Quiet American named Nantucket Sound with a win and a second place finish in two lifetime starts. Sunriver also has a nice prospect named Sun Rivah out of Mt. Livermore that broke maiden’s first time out with a 77 speed rating. Last time I checked on Friday Sunriver was at 137 bps to breed, and was still eligible for credits. Not a bad affordable first year sire at all!

Sun King (Charismatic x Clever Trick x Summer Squall)

Accomplishments: Sun King won over 1 million as a three year old with six ITM out of 10 races, three of those races were graded stakes wins. In 27 career starts had 14 stake finishes ITM. Total career earnings over 2 million.

In The Sim: 16.7% winners with 100% of earnings coming on dirt. Wolfmother sent Sun King to Pine Bluff and has been rewarded with a win, and a third place finish in three starts. Wolfmother’s horse Sun Bluff had a nice speed rating of 75 last time out, and proves Sun King can manufacture a quality colt. Legendary1 might even have a better prospect with Born to B Wild which broke maiden’s first time out with a 70 speed factor.

Seeking The Best (Seeking the Gold x Summer Squall x Mr. Prospector)

Accomplishments: Seeking The Best was a late bloomer who had over 1.3 million in earnings at age 5. In 21 starts 16 were ITM, and all of those were 2nd or better finishes. Six of Seeking The Best’s ITM came in stakes races. When the dust settled, Seeking the Best had over 1.8 million in career earnings.

In The Sim: The first thing that stands out about Seeking the Best is the bloodlines which are very nice indeed. Seeking the Best has 27 runners with 14.8% of those winners at this point. Seeking the Best has been at about 10k per runner in earnings thus far, with runners slightly preferring turf by a slim margin. Seeking Ireland is clearly the early prospect here to beat with two second place finishes and 130k in earnings in two starts. Owner Focused threw 'Seeking at Tabasco Cat and ended up with a nice prospect named Star of the Sea which finished 2nd in her first start with a 71 speed rating.
