Sim Magic – Success with Retired Mares
One of the biggest mysteries in the sim is the affect, that the Retired Mare has, when breeding to one, is it really necessary for the Mare to have had success on the track. Or would it be simply enough if the pedigree was good:
Like a Storm Cat x Secretariat that was a fluke on the track could still be a super Mare, while a Storm Cat x Tarr Road would have weaker chances, even if it was better on the track?
As you see I used Storm Cat both times in the example, well, because Storm Cat is the horse I wanna focus on in this edition of Sim Magic. Storm Cat has 627 Retired Mares in the Game, of those 4 are Grade A, 23 Grade B, 30 Grade C, 38 Grade D and 34 Grade E,
Multiple horses are Grades F,G and H. I will not look into detail for those, but get some examples of them later.
Looking at the pure stats first: (of course a GW is a SW also, so if you want the total of stakes winners, add both numbers together(used for percentages later)
Of The 4 A Graded Mares 1 has produced a GW, 2 a SW.
Of The 23 B Graded Mares 6 have produced a GW, 4 a SW.
Of the 30 C Graded Mares 6 have produced a GW, 11 a SW.
Of the 38 D Graded Mares 7 have produced a GW, 9 a SW.
Of the 34 E Graded Mares 7 have produced a GW, 8 a SW.
Let’s get the %
A: 25% GW, 75% SW+GW
B: 26% GW, 43% SW+GW
C: 20% GW, 56% SW+GW
D: 18% GW, 42% SW+GW
E: 20% GW, 44% SW+GW
As you can see, the numbers decline a little downwards, but for example E Graded Mares have better % then D Graded, and are nearly equal to B Graded, while C Graded have the best SW+GW%. So obviously the Winnings of the Mare and the thereby resulting Grade are not so important.
More important is the horse in the Dam Sire slot, which results in the Dam Dam Sire of the new breed, for example almost all Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector have produced a SW or GW, but not all of them, let’s look at two B Mares:
Organic Project:
http://www.simulatedsports.net/hr/runtime/lookret.asp?id=100013852
As you can see nearly all horses she produced have become Stakes Winners,
Then take a look at:
Fire N Desire:
http://www.simulatedsports.net/hr/runtime/lookret.asp?id=101016171
Hey, whats that, a Storm Cat x Mr.Prospector not getting a SW, let’s go into details,
Fire N Desire was a Grade 2 winner with 271,420$ total earnings in 14 races, Organic Project a Grade 3 winner with 387,270$ total earnings in 27 races.
So basically both should be equally matched, so it seems to be in the Sires that have been used with the mares, let’s take a look:
Organic Project crossed with:
Belong to Me (SW), Borrego(SW),Sadler’s Wells(SW,Clm),High Chapparal(SW),Awesome Again(SW), Dayjur(GW), Dehere
Fire N Desire crossed with:
Broken Vow, Mr. Greeley, Lemon Drop Kid(Clm), Dixieland Band, Summer Squall, Tiznow
While I’d rate the sires Organic Project was matched higher than those of Fire N Desire, a Mr. Greeley or Dixieland Band are still known to produce Stakes Winners, while a Belong to Me or Borrego are not rated that high, and they still fired with Organic Project, so there seems to be some mystery in the results of Retired Mares which may be tough to unveal.
Let’s take Storm Cat x Seattle Slew, still a pretty combination, and once again we take two pretty evenly matched Mares:
Storm over Seattle:
http://www.simulatedsports.net/hr/runtime/lookret.asp?id=101015963
2 SW, 1 GW, a big producer with 5 progeny.
God of War:
http://www.simulatedsports.net/hr/runtime/lookret.asp?id=105026594
3 horses so far, none a Stakes winner, all 3 hand in ALW level,
both Mares are D Rated, Stakes Winners and Graded Placed, let’s once again take a look at the sires used with them:
Storm over Seattle:
A.P. Indy, Dayjur(GW), Smarty Jones(SW), Grand Slam(SW), Pine Bluff
God of War:
Empire Maker, Gone West, Kingmambo
As you can see, God of War has only been matched with Top Notch Sires, and still couldn’t produce, so as much as I would have liked to reveal any tendencies, I can’t get them, some horses work as a Retired Mare, some don’t.
But just if you want to get one big read out of the article, Dayjur x Storm Cat seems to be a good cross, as both Mr. P. And Seattle Slew as the DDS produced a Graded Winner.
Just to give the complete chaos this article research let me into, another D Rated retired Mare:
Banana Brio:
http://www.simulatedsports.net/hr/runtime/lookret.asp?id=102009077
Storm Cat x I am the Game, 2 Stakes Wins, 210,768$ in 43 Races, produced 3 Stakes Winners, let’s take a look at the Sires:
Red Clubs (SW), Strike the Gold, Sonny Hines(Clm), Empire Maker(SW), Seeking the Gold (SW)
Oh, can we draw a conclusion here finally, yes:
Use a good sire, like Empire Maker or Seeking the Gold, and your chances of getting a Stakes Winner are much higher than with a Sonny Hines.
As we can draw as a complete conclusion and summary,
While the line of the retired mare is important, and the results as a racehorse have some influence, still the most important thing is the working of the sire x Dam sire cross in the new horse, match a good sire with a decent Retired Mare, and the product will be better than a bad sire with a good Retired Mare.
So long, see you next week with Sim Magic............
