Wooden Indian Lock Brings Forth a Derby Favorite

Great Late Close to win the race!

Wooden Indian -- Derby Lock Prep
Grade I
A mile and one eighth on the Fast Dirt Course
$750,000
All horses, 3 years old
Stakes record – 2004 – Tuff Enuff, 1:47-4/5, SPF 108.913

The Qwikvett Stables have a Bluegrass Derby entry after RIPPERBEAST ran like a rocket sled on rails from the “way back” to win the WOODEN INDIAN GI Lock Race this weekend in New York. Although he was more than ten lengths back at the half, he put on an impressive show down the stretch to win quite easily and become one of the favorites for the Bluegrass Derby in a few weeks. Jockey Child has to be commended for knowing just how much his horse had and when to make his move in a nearly perfect race.

RIPPERBEAST now has four victories in nine tries. All four wins have been Stakes races although this is his first Graded win. He started out with his very first race as a Stakes win and has never run anything else. He now has $875k in earnings for trainer Pincay and looks like he is still improving. He ran his fastest race with a solid 104.74 SPF which was his third time over the century mark speed wise. He improved his rank to number two in the three year old classic class.

As predicted, there was plenty of early speed in the race with my pre race choice PERFECT DENIAL taking the early lead followed closely by both DESTINY'S GONE and ALTABLE. None of these colts could hold up to the fast pace and ended up in the middle of the pack. DISTORTED DRAGON and FINGER PAINTING were back at the rear of the field over nine lengths back but put on a charge but couldn’t match up to our winner. TONYOCITY came up for fourth for the second Graded race in a row.

RIPPERBEAST looks like something special and gets to hang around and see what happens with the other qualifiers for the Derby. Trainer Pincay and the Qwikvett Stables will take a day or two to soak this one and start getting ready for the big race.

Good luck to all runners!
